Formed elements are blood cells and cell fragments, including red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets, which are cell fragments.

Blood is the only fluid tissue.
Blood is a complex connective tissue in which living cells,
the formed elements, are suspended in the fluid called plasma.
Composition of the Blood
55% Plasma (fluid matrix of water, salts, proteins, etc.)
45% Cellular elements:
Red Blood Cells (RBCs): 5-6 x 10 12 /L of blood. Contain
hemoglobin which transport oxygen and CO2.
White Blood Cells (WBCs): 4.5-11 x 10 9/L of blood.
Blood Plays an essential role in immunity and defense. Including:
Lymphocytes: T cells and B cells
Macrophages: (phagocytes)
Granulocytes: Neutrophils, basophils, and eosinophil.
Platelets: Cellular fragments, 150 - 400 x 109/ L of blood.
Important in blood clotting.
3 major functions of blood are

Red blood cells or erythrocytes transport Oxygen from lungs to cells and Carbon dioxide from cells to lungs
Nutritive fluid
Blood absorb nutrients from digested foods in gastrointestinal tract and transport to all the cells in body
Excretory
Metabolic wastes, excess water and ions , and other molecules not needed by the body are carried by the blood to the kidneys and excreted in the urine
7-Regulation
Hormonal
Blood carries hormones from their site of origin to distant target tissues , where they perform the regulatory functions
Temperature
Blood is responsible to carry body heat to the surface in high temperature environment as well as to keep body warm within low temperature environment i.e., Vasodilation and vasoconstriction.
8-Protection
Clotting
The clotting mechanism protects against blood loss when vessels are damaged
Immune
The immune function of blood is performed by the leukocytes that protects against many disease causing agents

Straw colored fluid made of water (~90%), other contents include:
Proteins make the bulk of the solutes:
Albumins (60%), manufactured in the liver are the most abundant
Globulins (36%) are immune bodies
Fibrinogen (4%) for blood clotting
Nutrients: glucose, amino acids, lipids, cholesterol
Electrolytes: Na+, K+, Ca++, Mg++, H+, Cl-, HCO3-, PO4--, SO4--
Waste: urea, creatinine, uric acid, bilirubin
Gases: O2 , CO2 , N2
Protein bound hormones
Plasma without clotting factors is called “serum”
12-RBC/ Erythrocytes
An RBC is a 7.5 micron disc shaped body with a central depression
The cell is without a nucleus or mitochondria
AN RBC contains hemoglobin and filamentous proteins attached to the cell wall to impart flexibility on it
Life span 120 days
13Erythrocytes are produced in bone marrow
Older erythrocytes are removed from the circulation by phagocytic cells in the liver, spleen and bone marrow.

Blood consists of red blood cells, platelets, and various white blood cells suspended in plasma. Red blood cells carry oxygen from the lungs to tissues and carbon dioxide back to the lungs. White blood cells help protect the body from infection. Platelets help the blood clot to prevent excessive bleeding from cuts or wounds. Bone marrow produces all blood cells, which have different functions and lifespans. Blood type is determined by antigens on red blood cells and compatibility must be checked before blood transfusions.

Cell Therapy Expansion and Challenges in Autoimmune Disease
There is increasing confidence that cell therapies will soon play a role in the treatment of autoimmune disorders, but the extent of this impact remains to be seen. Early readouts on autologous CAR-Ts in lupus are encouraging, but manufacturing and cost limitations are likely to restrict access to highly refractory patients. Allogeneic CAR-Ts have the potential to broaden access to earlier lines of treatment due to their inherent cost benefits, however they will need to demonstrate comparable or improved efficacy to established modalities.
In addition to infrastructure and capacity constraints, CAR-Ts face a very different risk-benefit dynamic in autoimmune compared to oncology, highlighting the need for tolerable therapies with low adverse event risk. CAR-NK and Treg-based therapies are also being developed in certain autoimmune disorders and may demonstrate favorable safety profiles. Several novel non-cell therapies such as bispecific antibodies, nanobodies, and RNAi drugs, may also offer future alternative competitive solutions with variable value propositions.
Widespread adoption of cell therapies will not only require strong efficacy and safety data, but also adapted pricing and access strategies. At oncology-based price points, CAR-Ts are unlikely to achieve broad market access in autoimmune disorders, with eligible patient populations that are potentially orders of magnitude greater than the number of currently addressable cancer patients. Developers have made strides towards reducing cell therapy COGS while improving manufacturing efficiency, but payors will inevitably restrict access until more sustainable pricing is achieved.
Despite these headwinds, industry leaders and investors remain confident that cell therapies are poised to address significant unmet need in patients suffering from autoimmune disorders. However, the extent of this impact on the treatment landscape remains to be seen, as the industry rapidly approaches an inflection point.

- 8. Plasma The liquid part of the blood which is about 55% of the total blood volume. It functions to provide essential nutrients, remove waste products from the cells and help the body to fight off infections.

- 10. Formed Elements The non fluid parts of blood which remains suspended in plasma are called formed elements. They are basically cells and fragments of celss.
