There are multiple methods to analyze films, including using Lacey's framework of five elements (setting, character, narrative, iconography, style) to determine a film's genre. Auteur theory can also be used to analyze a director's style and determine if they have characteristics of an auteur such as consistent themes or innovation. Films are analyzed by looking at conventions in each element and comparing them across genres. For example, Mean Girls contains conventions of teen comedy but also subverts stereotypes. Goodfellas is analyzed as the work of auteur Martin Scorsese due to its themes and influence despite initial lack of commercial success. Analyzing films using these methods provides deeper appreciation and understanding when viewing other films.
