DEPLOYED COMMUNICATIONS FOR THE AIR FORCE
 HE IS A MILITARY INSTRUCTOR AND TRAINER AND HAS BEEN TEACHING
ADULT LEARNERS FOR ALMOST FOUR YEARS
 THIS CLASS IS TAUGHT IN A FORMAL CLASSROOM SETTING
WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO
BECOME AN INSTRUCTOR?
 REASONS FOR TEACHING SOMEWHAT SELFISH
 WAS LOOKING FOR SOME STABILITY AND
WANTED A BREAK FROM DEPLOYING AFTER
BECOMING A SINGLE FATHER

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO
SOMEONE INTERESTED IN BEING A TEACHER
OF ADULT LEARNERS?
 DON’T BE AFRAID TO ASK FELLOW INSTRUCTORS FOR HELP
 YOU DON’T HAVE ALL THE ANSWERS. DON’T PRETEND THAT
YOU DO…ADULT LEARNERS WILL SEE RIGHT THROUGH IT
 BUT KEEP LEARNING SO THAT YOU CAN PROVIDE ANSWERS
TO YOUR STUDENTS AND IMPROVE YOUR SKILLS
 BE OPEN TO THE FEEDBACK OF BOTH COLLEAGUES AND
STUDENTS

HAVE FUN!
FINAL THOUGHTS

 DESPITE ORIGINAL REASONS FOR DECIDING TO TEACH
IT IS A REWARDING EXPERIENCE
 EVEN IN A MILITARY ENVIRONMENT ADULT LEARNERS
STILL WANT TO KNOW WHY THEY NEED TO LEARN
SOMETHING
 MILITARY CLASSROOMS SEEM TO HAVE ASPECTS OF
PEDAGOGY (TEACHER CENTERED) AND ANDRAGOGY
(FULFILLING KNOWLES’ ASSUMPTIONS)

  • 5. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE CHALLENGES YOU’VE FACED TEACHING ADULT LEARNERS?  STUDENTS ARE THE SAME AGE AND SOME LIKE TO CHALLENGE YOU  NOT EVERYONE LEARNS THE SAME WAY. LEARNING HOW TO TEACH DIFFERENT TYPES OF ADULT LEARNERS  SOME STUDENTS ARE PREVIOUS CO-WORKERS AND HAVE A HARD TIME SEEING YOU IN THE ROLE OF TEACHER
  • 6. WAS IT HARDER THAN YOU THOUGHT IT WAS GOING TO BE?  NOT REALLY (LAUGHS). I’M A HUGE EXTROVERT AND ENJOY INTERACTING WITH STUDENTS.  BEING AN EXTROVERT ALSO HELPS ME TO KEEP THE STUDENTS ENGAGED  DESPITE REASONS FOR WANTING TO TEACH I COME FROM A FAMILY OF EDUCATORS AND IT FEELS NATURAL
  • 7. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE INTERESTED IN BEING A TEACHER OF ADULT LEARNERS?  DON’T BE AFRAID TO ASK FELLOW INSTRUCTORS FOR HELP  YOU DON’T HAVE ALL THE ANSWERS. DON’T PRETEND THAT YOU DO…ADULT LEARNERS WILL SEE RIGHT THROUGH IT  BUT KEEP LEARNING SO THAT YOU CAN PROVIDE ANSWERS TO YOUR STUDENTS AND IMPROVE YOUR SKILLS  BE OPEN TO THE FEEDBACK OF BOTH COLLEAGUES AND STUDENTS HAVE FUN!

FINAL THOUGHTS  DESPITE ORIGINAL REASONS FOR DECIDING TO TEACH IT IS A REWARDING EXPERIENCE  EVEN IN A MILITARY ENVIRONMENT ADULT LEARNERS STILL WANT TO KNOW WHY THEY NEED TO LEARN SOMETHING  MILITARY CLASSROOMS SEEM TO HAVE ASPECTS OF PEDAGOGY (TEACHER CENTERED) AND ANDRAGOGY (FULFILLING KNOWLES’ ASSUMPTIONS)
