2. WHAT IS INTERTEXTUALITY?
• Intertextuality- a deliberate referencing of one (or more)
texts within the narrative or another, with the
expectation that the audience will be able to recognise
and appreciate its significance. Intertextual referencing
requires the audience to be active.
3. SHREK 2
• Shrek is an animation film, based on a children’s book.
• There are two levels to the movie- the level of the
simple children’s story- with Shrek and Fiona meeting
the parents of Fiona’s for the first time.
• The second level which is full of intertextual references
for adults and young adults to enjoy.
4. AMERICAN BRANDS IN SHREK
• Burger Prince (Burger King)
• Far Far away sign (Hollywood Sign)
• Versarchery (Versace)
• Gap Queen (Gap kids)
• Farbucks Coffee (Starbucks)
5. Little Red Riding Hood
In the opening of Shrek 2 there are
many different intertextual references.
The first one that is apparent is the
introduction of Little red riding hood,
who is known for the well known children
story.
6. The Little Mermaid
As highlighted by the picture, Shrek also
references the iconic Disney movie little
Mermaid. This intertextual reference
was hard to spot but nonetheless
demonstrates the directors intentions to
recreate these iconic movie scenes.
7. Lord Of The Rings
The image demonstrates the iconic
scene in Lord Of The Rings when Frodo
wears the ring for the first time. This
scene creates comedy and takes on a
different intertextual reference to the
others, which brings in the genre of
fantasy.
8. Spiderman
Another scene, is the Spiderman scene.
This scene is one of the longest of the
open honeymoon scene, which is
influential, due to the Spiderman being
well known throughout adults.
