Everything You Ever Wanted to Know
About Internship
But Were Too Afraid to Ask

Tips for Interns Session, 2013

Dr. Robert Marshall
Get involved in medical education
Teaching and learning opportunities are created, not found
Physician, heal thyself
Fit your own oxygen mask before assisting others
You are a doctor
Get involved with patient care, you are not a “glorified secretary”
You are never alone in the hospital
Even if it feels like it sometimes…
Work is for work, home is for
home
Don’t take work home with you; hand over your patients to afterhours doctors when it’s time to go home
Be a Professional
Introduce yourself, rise above gossip, be considerate to everyone,
be discreet about your colleagues
Enjoy the other half of your life
You have (probably) never had both money and time together so
make your holidays count; make time for friends and family
Follow the “when you can” rule
Eat when you can, sleep when you can, sit when you can etc.
etc… because it’s not fun when you “can’t”
Don’t get jaded
Clinical leadership is an emerging field - if something can be
improved, speak up about it; get involved with service redesign
Be collegial, not competitive
Because you’re all in this together
Thank you
Dr. Robert Marshall
