Zoe Ayers completed a 180-hour internship split between two pharmacy sites. At the Anderson Free Clinic Pharmacy, she checked patients out, filled prescriptions, and helped organize the pharmacy. Her supervisor was Lisa Thorndyke. At Hubbard Young Pharmacy, she counted medications, checked patients out, assisted in compounding, and organized prescriptions. Her supervisor was Ron Young. For her internship project, Zoe wrote a comparison of the two pharmacies and researched five medications. Through this experience, Zoe confirmed her interest in pharmacy due to interacting with patients, being active, critical thinking challenges, and managing workflow.

2. SPRING 2016 HEALTH SCIENCE
INTERNSHIP
As a Health Science student at Clemson University, I
was required to complete HLTH 4200, a class that
allowed me the opportunity to complete an
internship with at least 180 hours on site for
academic credit.
For my internship I split my time between two sites,
The Anderson Free Clinic Pharmacy and Hubbard
Young Pharmacy.

Mission Statement – To serve the health needs of the underserved citizens of
Anderson county through community engagement and partnerships with those
who care.

4. ANDERSON FREE CLINIC PHARMACY
 The Anderson Free Clinic Pharmacy provides access to many medications for
the patients of the Anderson Free Clinic.
 They are regulated by the South Carolina Board of Pharmacy, under the
regulations for a free clinic pharmacy that are slightly different than those of
a typical retail pharmacy.
 Pharmacy staff and volunteers fill and dispense medications to patients.
 They only carry certain, commonly prescribed medications. They buy most
of their generic medications and get most of their name brand medication
through Patient Assistance Programs from drug companies. They fill
prescriptions within 2 days of them being dropped off.
 They charge $2 for most medications in order to keep operating as a
pharmacy.

8. HUBBARD YOUNG PHARMACY
The Goal of Hubbard Young Pharmacy is to be a full service pharmacy,
providing top quality products and services.

9. HUBBARD YOUNG PHARMACY
 Hubbard Young Pharmacy is an independent pharmacy located in
downtown Clemson, SC.
 They fill prescriptions for their patients the same day they are
dropped off.
 They are also a compounding pharmacy and can compound specific
medications that are not always available from the manufacturer.
 They carry many over the counter products for their patients as well.
Some of these products include medical supplies like wheelchairs,
crutches, and compression stockings that are not available
everywhere.

11. SUPERVISION AT HUBBARD YOUNG
 While at Hubbard and Young Mr. Ron Young was my primary supervisor.
When Mr. Young was not present, the pharmacist on staff would be my
main point of contact.
 Other pharmacy staff would give me tasks to complete as well.

12. INTERNSHIP PROJECTS
 On each of my sites I took part in many daily projects and activities;
however, one big project I took on between both sites was writing a
comparison paper, discussing the similarities and differences between
the two pharmacies.
 Anderson Free Clinic is considering publishing this comparison or
excerpts from it on their website or in their newsletter.

knowing what conditions they can be used to treat.

18. FINAL THOUGHTS
 I have thought that I wanted to pursue a career in pharmacy for many years now; however, after
completing this internship experience across two different sites I am sure that this is the field for
me!
 Some of my favorite things about the field of Pharmacy include
 Interacting with patients – I enjoy talking to people and helping them understand something they do
not understand. As a pharmacist I will regularly have the opportunity teach patients about their
medications.
 Being on your feet and moving around – I do not sit still easily and could not imagine sitting behind
a desk all day everyday. As a pharmacist I will be on my feet moving around the pharmacy
performing various tasks and procedures.
 Critical Thinking – I enjoy working on puzzles and challenges that make me think. As a pharmacist I
will come across situations that will require me to use critical thinking and come up with a solution to
best help patients.
 Managing the work flow of the pharmacy – I am a very organized person and like for things to run
smoothly. As a pharmacist I will be the team leader of sorts for the people working within the
pharmacy. I will have the opportunity to lead and organize how our work will flow from person to
person, getting patients their medicine as quickly and accurately as possible.
