The Internet of Things (IoT) was first proposed in 1999 and connects various devices to a centralized network to analyze gathered information and provide services for health, safety, and environmental benefits. Projections estimate the number of IoT devices will grow significantly over the next few years across areas like wearables, connected automobiles, connected homes, and connected cities. While IoT provides opportunities, barriers to adoption include security concerns, lack of regulations and standards, costs of replacing devices, and ease of use challenges.
