Internet is a worldwide system of interconnected
networks and computers.
o Internet could not have existed with out the two
major inventions of 19th century.
o Electricity and
o Telegraph system
HISTORY OF INTERNET
HOW DID THE INTERNET COME
TO BE?
o It started as a research project to experiment
with connecting computers together with packet
switched networks.
o It was developed with funding and leadership of
the US Defense Department’s Advanced
Research Projects Agency (ARPA).
ARPANET
o ARPANET was the world’s first operational
network, and the predecessor of the globel
internet
o Arpanet was developed by the U.S Department of
Defense.
o One theory was that it was developed to survive the
nuclear attack. That theory is often disputed by
scientists.
o The original internet provided screens full of text.
o Great for sharing info and accessing the library
of congress.
o Text was all one font and size.
o Boring
o GUIs added some color and layout,
o but still were not very interesting
o Hyperlinks were invented.
o www.stmsaints.com
o The mouse were invented to click on
hyperlinks.
o The URL (Uniform Source Locater) was
invented. This allowed sites to be named.
o Tim Berners Lee brought all of this
together to form the world wide web in
1990.
o Very slow.
o Did not handle loading pictures very
well.
o Modems were very slow.
o The Berners Lee develops the world
wide web consortium to develop the
standards for the web.
o The Berners Lee develops the world

o Netscape is founded.
o The internet exploded during this
period.
o The first commercial site was
Amazon.com.
o In 1994 the World Wide Web grew by
an astounding 2300 percent.
o Amazon saw that online shopping was
the wave of the future.

o Netscape was the standard until 1988.
o It folded and was taken over by AOL.
o Microsoft Internet Explorer snagged 96
% of the Browser market.
o IE has only recently been challenged by
excellent Mozilla browser.

to anyone, anywhere.
o Robots will be able to recognize your thoughts
and respond to your commands.
o Most robots will be invisible, and they will
outnumber humans.
