Copyright law gives creators exclusive rights over their original works. Fair use allows limited use of copyrighted works for educational purposes under certain conditions. Teachers can use up to 10% or 1000 words of a text, an entire poem under 250 words, 5 images by an artist, and a single chapter from a book for classroom instruction. Multiple copies are allowed for each student. Broadcast programs can be recorded and used for instruction for 10 school days then must be erased. Software can only be copied for backup or to run the program, not distributed. Adaptations require permission.
