This document summarizes research using the Material Point Method (MPM) to simulate impact and fragmentation. MPM is a numerical technique that can simulate solid mechanics problems involving large deformations and failures. The researchers applied MPM to simulate impact tests and the resulting fragmentation behavior, representing materials using failure surfaces and tracking cracks. Simulations of cylinder impacts showed the MPM approach could successfully model fragmentation into multiple pieces. Future work will refine failure models and simulate more complex impact scenarios.
