WHY LANGUAGE LAB?
The four basic principles for acquiring proficiency in any language are
Listening,Speaking, Reading and Writing or (LSRW). Although these are
intrinsically linked they must all be mastered in the LSRW order of learn-
ing an order that we unconsciously adopt when learning the mother
tongue and obtaining fluency in the language.
However, in a typical classroom setting this order is reversed. The
student is first taught to write or spell the words, learn sentence struc-
turing by reading passages/ poems etc and then attempt to speak with
zero exposure to any auditory source other than the instructor who
(more often than not) is also a non-native speaker who has also learned

11. Open Stream Degree courses are structured to meet the educational needs of those who
have not acquired the basic qualification needed for admission to regular degree courses.
This scheme is mainly to facilitate those persons who could not undergo the regular college
course due to various reasons and who eagerly aspire to acquire a Degree.
In this stream no basic educational qualification is insisted for admission. Any person who
has attained the age of 18, on July 1st of the year of admission are eligible to seek admission
to the courses. However, the applicants have to appear for an entrance examination
conducted by the School. Only those who secure a minimum of 35% marks in the examina-
tion are admitted to the Degree course.

The Public Petition dated 11-11-1839 initiated the establishment of Madras University. It was in Janu-
ary 1840 with Mr.George Norton as its President, that the University Board was constituted. In 1854
after a lapse of 14 years, the Government of India formulated a systematic educational policy for
