Who they are…
“The International and Global Studies Program educates and
empowers students to be engaged global citizens. Our
interdisciplinary, liberal arts approach emphasizes intercultural
competency, strong foreign language proficiency, and a critical
understanding of the complexity and interconnectedness of world
regions and populations. Study Abroad and other cross-cultural
experiences are also integral components of the Program. We
therefore prepare our students for a variety of public- and privatesector careers where these qualities and experiences are valued, as
well as for graduate and professional studies in fields with an
international or global focus.” –Mission Statement, IGS Website

Dr. Roberto Campo
Director of the IGS Program
Head of the French Department
The basics
The program serves roughly 180 students per year
including both undergraduate and graduate level
The program has 7 concentrations:

Russian Studies
European Studies
Latin American + Caribbean Studies
Asian Studies
African Studies
International + Global Human Rights
International and Global Affairs and Development

The program is closely tied in with study abroad due
to their study abroad requirement for all students
The program hosts their annual Asian Moon Festival
which can have attendance of over 1,000 people as
well as hosting Film Festivals every couple of months
with attendance anywhere from 25-60 people.

The program is also linked with Phi Beta Delta
honors society for those who serve internationalism.
What kind of program are you?
“We are very unorthodox. We are based on collaboration of other departments; very
outward oriented, not inward….”
“Our students are very unique, open-minded and creative people.”

“VERY custom evaluation, advising and class scheduling. We base student schedules
around what they want to learn as well as our required language and core classes.
–Yvonne Matlosz [Secretary of Dr. Campo]
What things do you consider essential?

“VISIBILITY is absolutely necessary for our program; we need
it to be seen.”
“The program is almost entirely web based. most of the
information about the program is found online.”
–Yvonne Matlosz

“I need to be close to Yvonne’s office [and potentially later an
Assistant Director and student worker’s offices] for
collaboration.”
–Dr. Roberto Campo

What things would you like to have in your program?
“A waiting area for guests
A student lounge
A student library/waiting area combination
A big TV in the lobby with a live feed of information on the department
Multi-media center
Teleconferencing
A “high-tech” smart classroom
Overall uniqueness of space”
–both Yvonne and Dr. Campo had similar responses
Predictions and Goals
“We expect to obtain an Assistant Director and at least two
student workers. My hopes are for my position to become a
dedicated full-time position and the Assistant Director position
become dedicated part-time.”
“I hope for the program to have regular guest speakers that
students can become familiar with. I would also like to see
classes being created specifically for IGS students as opposed
to the combined classes we have now with other departments.”
“I would like for there to be shared or convertible classrooms
for our students as well.”
