3. C.S. Lewis Clive Staples Lewis was born November 29, 1898 in Belfast, Northern Ireland. He had one older brother, Warren Hamilton Lewis. When Lewis was almost 8 years old his mother died of cancer. In school Lewis was not great at math but excelled in literary studies. In 1916 he won a scholarship to University College, Oxford. From April to September Lewis was a student there until he enlisted in the British army during World War I. On April 25, 1917 he reached the front line in the Somme Valley in France on his 19 th birthday. On April 15, 1918 Lewis was wounded. Later that year in December he was discharged from the army. In June, 1924 Lewis resumed his studies at Oxford where he received many awards associated with his achievements in literature. Over the next 3 decades Lewis published a number of things as well as giving talks on the radio. He also renewed his Christian faith, which was the subject of many of his literary works. In 1950, Lewis published the first of the seven Chronicles of Narnia, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. Over the next 6 years, the rest of the Chronicles of Narnia were published. In 1956, Lewis married Joy Davidman Gresham in a secret civil ceremony. She had converted to Christianity from Judaism partly because of Lewis’s books. She was 17 years younger than him. Joy died in 1960 after a seven year struggle with bone cancer. Lewis died one week before his 65 th birthday after a variety of illnesses, including heart attack and kidney problems. 5. Characters… Aslan - The king and god of Narnia. The noble lion sacrifices his life so that the Witch will spare Edmund. After being brought back to life the next morning, Aslan rises and defeats the White Witch once and for all. The White Witch - This evil queen of Narnia places a spell on the land so that it is winter and never Christmas. The Witch is the "Emperor's hangman," as Mr. Beaver says, and she has the right to kill any Narnian traitor. She wields a wand that turns creatures and people to stone. The wand also produces the Turkish Delight that enslaves Edmund and makes him greedy. The Witch kills Aslan, and it is only after he rises from the dead that he defeats her. Like any malicious character, the Witch, is an embodiment of evil. Quit

6. … More Characters… Peter Pevensie - Peter is the oldest of the Pevensie children, and he is noble and courageous. He matures into a young man during his first few days in Narnia. He immediately proves himself after protecting Susan from a ferocious wolf. Aslan knights him, and eventually crowns him the High King of Narnia. During his reign he is known as King Peter the Magnificent. Susan Pevensie - The second oldest of the Pevensie children, Susan is the beauty among the Pevensies. She is sweet and kind. Santa Claus gives her a horn to blow if she ever finds herself in a dangerous situation. When she becomes queen at Cair Paravel, she is known as Queen Susan the Gentle. Edmund Pevensie - The third oldest Pevensie child, Edmund is a brat for most of The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe. Edmund is spiteful and mean, and likes to tease his sister, Lucy. His greed for the enchanted Turkish Delight leads him to act as a traitor against his siblings. Edmund joins forces with the White Witch, but eventually sees the error of his ways and returns to the good side. Lucy Pevensie - The youngest Pevensie is cheerful, kind, and brave. This curious, happy-go-lucky girl is the first of the children to venture into Narnia. Later, she urges her siblings to search for her friend, Tumnus, when they find that the faun's home is ransacked. In the beginning, she is the protagonist, although Aslan fills that role later in the novel. We view much of the action through her optimistic eyes, as a foil to the skeptical eyes as Edmund. Santa Claus gives Lucy a cordial, which she uses to heal the wounded following the battle with the Witch's troops. She is known as Queen Lucy the Valiant. Quit

7. … and More Characters Tumnus - Lucy meets Tumnus, a faun, on her first excursion into Narnia. He initially intends to kidnap her and bring her to the White Witch. Tumnus does not go through with it, and he spares her life. For his crime, the Witch ransacks his home and frightens him. Later, Aslan rescues Tumnus from the spell. Kind, sensitive, and caring, Tumnus and Lucy become fast friends once it is settled that he is not going capture her. Professor Kirke - Professor Kirke is a slightly eccentric, elderly professor. He takes care of the Pevensie children so they can escape the air raids in London during World War II. Wise and open-minded, he helps Peter and Susan understand that Narnia may indeed exist. Mr. Beaver - Mr. Beaver is Tumnus's friend, and he aids the Pevensie children in the search for the faun. Mr. Beaver introduces the Pevensies to Santa Claus and ultimately brings them to the Stone Table and Aslan Mrs. Beaver - She is Mr. Beaver's wife. Mrs. Beaver is kindly, good-natured, motherly, and a good cook. Dwarf - The dwarf is one of the Witch's evil henchman and is her right-hand man. Maugrim - Maugrim is a wolf and the chief of the Witch's Secret Police. Father Christmas - Father Christmas is also known as Santa Claus and he makes an appearance in the land of Narnia. He explains that Christmas has arrived in Narnia and as a gift, gives special tools to each of children. Quit

8. Setting The setting for The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe is Narnia. Narnia is a magical world that Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy enter through the wardrobe in Professor Kirke’s house. Narnia is where they have great adventures that lead them to be kings and queens of Narnia. Quit

9. Summary of Chapters 1-5 Lucy Looks into a Wardrobe Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy are 4 siblings who have been sent to the country side to escape the air raids of World War II. They stay at Professor Kirke’s house. On the first day it rains so they decide to explore the house. They discover a spare room that has a wardrobe. They other 3 leave but Lucy stays. She opens the wardrobe and inside find a snowy forest! Eventually she meets a faun, half man, half goat. What Lucy Found There Lucy and the Faun get acquainted. He asks her if she is a Daughter of Eve (a human girl). He introduces himself as Tumnus. Tumnus explains that they are in Narnia and then invites Lucy to his home for tea. They have a wonderful time but when Lucy wakes from her dreaming sleep, she finds that Tumnus is upset. He tells Lucy about the White Witch and how he is supposed to turn humans in to her. Tumnus decides not to and walks her back to the lamppost and they say farewell as friends. Edmund and the Wardrobe When Lucy gets back she discovers that she was only gone a few seconds. When she tries to show her siblings Narnia, it isn’t there anymore. They think she is making it up. On the next rainy day the siblings play hide and seek and Edmund follows Lucy through the wardrobe into Narnia. There he meets an extremely pale woman in a sleigh. Turkish Delight The White Witch questions Edmund and finds out he is a human. The queen invites him to sit in her sleigh and magically conjures food (Turkish Delight) and drink. The Turkish Delight puts a spell on Edmund making him more greedy. The witch then tells him to bring his brother and sisters back and he can have more Turkish Delight. Back at the lamppost Edmund and Lucy meet. She tells Edmund that Tumnus hasn’t been punished by the White Witch. In his state of greed Edmund rationalizes that the White Witch isn’t who he met. They go back through the wardrobe. Back on This Side of the Door On the other side Edmund denies ever being in Narnia in an opportunity to act superior. His siblings get mad at him for playing with Lucy’s mind. When Peter and Susan talk to the professor, he believes Lucy’s story. One day all the children are in the hall and hear the housekeeper with a tour. In fear of being found they run away from the party, eventually into the wardrobe. Quit

10. Summary of Chapters 6-9 Into the Forest Once in the wardrobe the Pevensie children notice they are all in Narnia! They set out to explore the wintry world. Lucy leads the way to Tumnus’s home but when they get there it has been ransacked. He has been taken by the White Witch. The four decide to save the faun. They don’t know where they are going but a robin leads them deeper into the wood. A Day With the Beavers The robin leads them to Mr. Beaver, a friend of Tumnus. Mr. Beaver tells them he has been instructed to bring them to Aslan. The children want to ask him questions but even some of the trees are spies. So they go back to Beaver’s dam and meet Mrs. Beaver. What Happened After Dinner Mr. Beaver tells the children all about Aslan, who is the real King of Narnia. Aslan is a lion, the king of the beasts. When he is in Narnia he makes everything right. The children are to meet Aslan at the Stone Table. Then, everyone notices Edmund is missing. Beaver knows he has gone to the White Witch. So they start on their journey to the Stone Table. In the Witch’s House Edmund left the Beaver’s house after hearing about Aslan and the Stone Table. When Edmund reaches the Witch’s house he is met by Maugrim, chief of the Secret Police. He finds the Witch and Edmund tells her everything about Aslan. In fear, the Witch summons her servant to prepare her sledge. Quit

11. Summary of Chapters 10-13 The Spell Begins to Break Peter, Susan, Lucy, and the Beavers begin the journey to the stone table, but it is rough traveling. The children are exhausted so Beaver lets them rest in a cave. They wake up to sleigh bells. It isn’t the Witch but Santa Claus! It is Christmas in Narnia! The spell is weakening. Santa gives everyone gifts. Aslan is Nearer Edmund is beginning to realize his mistake after being treated cruelly by the Witch. As Edmund and the Witch drive through the snowy world they notice the snow is starting to thaw. The sledge gets stuck a few times so eventually they have to walk. The dwarf explains that Aslan caused the season to change. Peter’s First Battle The children reach Aslan and the Stone Table as well as other creatures of Narnia. They explain about Edmund’s treachery and ask for Aslan’s help. As Aslan is explaining to Peter, about where he and his siblings will reign, they hear Susan’s horn. They run over but Aslan holds everyone back as Peter kills the wolf chasing Susan up the tree. Aslan sends others to follow the other wolf because he will lead them to Edmund. Deep Magic From the Dawn of Time The animals follow the wolf and rescue Edmund. The next morning Peter, Susan, and Lucy find Edmund is back. He is having a serious talk with Aslan, which has a positive effect. The Witch comes to talk to Aslan about Edmund. The Witch reminds Aslan of the “Deep Magic” that says that since Edmund is a traitor he belongs to her. Aslan agrees and then they talk privately. When they finish the Witch looks happy and renounces her claim on Edmund. Quit

12. Summary of Chapters 14-17 The Triumph of the Witch After the Witch leaves Aslan seems sad. That night Susan and Lucy cannot sleep, so they beg to walk with Aslan. He agrees. At the Stone Table he tells them to go back but they hide behind a bush instead. They watch as evil creatures bind and humiliate Aslan. Susan and Lucy can’t watch while the Witch murders Aslan. Deeper Magic Before the Dawn of Time After Aslan’s murder the Witch’s forces leave to prepare for battle. Susan and Lucy spend the night crying over Aslan’s body, unable to leave him alone. At dawn they hear huge crack and Aslan is gone. He appears behind them alive! The Witch did not know that the “Deep Magic” says that if an innocent victim takes the guilty person’s place the Stone Table will crack and the death will be reversed. The girls climb on his back and they go to the Witch’s house. What Happened About the Statues In the Witch’s courtyard Alsan breathes on the stone statues, turned that way by they Witch, and brings them back to life. Once Aslan breathes on all the statues, he leads them into battle to help Peter. Peter’s army needs to help. When Aslan and his troops arrive Peter is fighting the Witch. Aslan breaks it up and kills the Witch. The Hunting of the White Stag Edmund was wounded in battle after smashing the Witch’s wand. Lucy heals him and others with the cordial Santa gave her. Aslan crowns Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy kings and queens of Narnia and then disappears. The children grow up and rule Narnia. One day while they attempt to hunt the white stag, they come upon the lamppost. They end up re-entering the wardrobe and come out back at the professor’s house, children again. They tell the professor all about their adventure. He explains that they will find other ways into Narnia and have more adventure there. Quit

17. Wardrobe “ Nothing there!” said Peter, and they all trooped out again--all except Lucy. She stayed behind because she thought it would be worth while trying the door of the wardrobe, even though she felt almost sure it would be locked. Turkish Delight The Queen let another drop fall from her bottle onto the snow, and instantly there appeared a round box, tied with green silk ribbon, which, when opened, turned out to contain several pounds of the best Turkish Delight. A candy of Turkish origin (Turkey is a country in southeastern Europe) usually consisting of jellylike cubes covered with powdered sugar.
