Intellectual disability is defined as significantly subaverage intellectual functioning existing concurrently with deficits in adaptive behavior that adversely affects educational performance. It affects approximately 1-3% of the population and is characterized by below average intelligence, slower learning, difficulty generalizing skills, and delays in adaptive behavior. Causes include genetic conditions, prenatal and birth complications, and health issues. Effective teaching strategies include breaking concepts into smaller steps, providing manipulatives, teaching social and daily living skills, and matching expectations to instruction through accommodations and modifications.

Leveraging the AWS Cloud to Create Scalable Research Performance AnalyticsHPCC Systems
SciVal provides real-time analysis of research performance at the institution and country level. Additionally, metrics can be computed for custom entities such as research areas, researcher groups and document sets. The underlying data used to calculate these metrics is from Elsevier’s Scopus abstract and citation database. Using this database as input, with over 60 million articles, HPCC systems are utilized to provide both real-time and offline calculations of a broad spectrum of metrics to evaluate research performance. HPCC Thor system is used to provide both daily updates and weekly recalculation of the entire metric set, and deploy index data to Roxie. A Java based controller application manages automated weekly and daily job flows. Job flow steps include running jobs on Thor, deploying data to Roxie and performing Roxie switching.
To meet the demands of growing article data, usage data, entities and functionality, Scival HPCC system was migrated to AWS.
This talk will focus on HPCC implementation on AWS, including:
a) Choosing AWS instance types for Thor and Roxie clusters
b) Installation and configuration of HPCC with CloudFormation templates on AWS EC2 instances.
c) AWS Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) and Security Groups to provide network and security layer for HPCC cluster.
d) AWS Autoscaling group and Elastic Network Interface (ENI) to automatically replace and configure terminated instance in the cluster.
e) AWS Elastic Load Balancer and HA Proxy for Roxie load balancing and switching.
f) Nagios and Ganglia to monitor system load and HPCC system processes.
g) Using AWS reserved instances to minimize cost.

Intellectual Disabilities
Introduction
Intellectual disability in lay man terms would be the disability to perform intelligent functioning of the human brain. The performance of everyday social and practical skills requires intellectual functioning and adaptive behaviour which are in-built abilities in most normal human beings. The ones who possess intellectual disability are often limited by their intellectual functioning and adaptive behaviour skills. This disability is generally spotted in individuals before they reach the age of 18 (Intellectual Disability (n.d.)).
Now we read more into the two parts of intellectual disability: intellectual functioning and adaptive behaviour.
· Intellectual functioning: In lay man terms, intellectual functioning is more commonly known as intelligence which largely helps in learning, reasoning, problem solving, mental capacity, etc. This is also known as IQ or the intelligence quotient and generally a score of 70 or 75 indicates a limitation in intellectual functioning. Basically, intellectual functioning part helps an individual to learn something, reason, make decisions and solve problems.
· Adaptive behaviour – These skills are required to deal with day-to-day life and the activities that we engage in every day. This involves communicating with other individuals, analysing the behaviour of others and respond accordingly. The limitations of adaptive behaviour can also be screened by standardized tests which comprises three basic skill types:
· Conceptual skills – this involves language, education, money, time and number concepts along with self direction
· Social skills – this involves interpersonal skills, social responsibility, self-esteem, gullibility, social problem solving, the ability to follow rules and to avoid being victimized
· Practical skills – this involves the daily activities, occupational skills, healthcare, travel, routines, usage of money and telephone usage
Hence in order to determine the intellectual disability of an individual, the above mentioned characteristics need to be kept in mind (Definition of Intellectual Disability, ( n.d.)).
Symptoms and causes of intellectual disability
There are various symptoms of intellectual disability that could go unnoticed for years till it becomes very evident. Sometimes it is noticeable during infancy and sometimes may remain dormant until the child reaches school going age and then the degree of disability starts to deteriorate and then show major symptoms. “The symptoms are as follows:
· Rolling over, sitting up, crawling or walking late
· Talking late or having trouble with talking
· Slow to master things like potty training, dressing, and feeding himself or herself
· Difficulty remembering things
· Inability to connect actions with consequences
· Behaviour problems such as explosive tantrums
· Difficulty with proble.

2) Legal Bases of Special Education Based on Idea 2004, ESSA, Magna Carta Ra 7277 DECS Order No. 26, S. 1997
3) History and Development of Special Education
This presentation discusses Intellectual Disability at length; what it is, it’s history, how to categorize it, how to identify it and how to effectively manage it. It also discusses more specifically about intellectual disability in the Nigerian setting.
1. Intellectual Disability
Definition in IDEA: ".. .significantly subaverage general intellectual functioning, existing
concurrently with deficits in adaptive behavior and manifested during the developmental period, that
adversely affects a child's educational performance." [34 CFR §300.8(c)(6)]
In 2010, President Obama signed Rosa's Law, which replaced the stigmatizing label "Mental
Retardation" with the more acceptable term "Intellectual Disability"
Low lQ:

l

behavior
2. IDs are the most common form of developmental disability 1-3% of
America's general population and 10% of students requiring SPED have an ID
Causes: Genetic conditions (e.g. Down syndrome, Fragile X syndrome, Williams syndrome),
problems during pregnancy (e.g. mother who used alcohol during pregnancy, improper cell division),
problems at birth (e.g. lack of oxygen), and health problems (e.g. malnutrition, lack of appropriate
medical care, contact with poisons, and diseases like whooping cough, meningitis, or the measles)
Characteristics:
* Variety of physical markers depending on cause of the disability
* Below average intelligence ranging in incidence rate and severity
o For a mild diagnosis, students' IQ scores will be between 70-75 or below o For a
moderate to severe diagnosis, students' IQ scores will be approximately 55 or below
* Slower learning rate and greater difficulty retaining information
* May reach a point where learning levels off
* Difficulty generalizing skills learned in one context to another
* Trouble solving problems/thinking logically
* Difficulty with social and daily living skills
* Developmental delays
Suggested Teaching Strategies:
* Treat students appropriately according to their chronological age
* Carefully follow the strategies outlined in the student's IEP
* Break large concepts down into smaller steps and include breaks
* Teach one subject or idea at a time
* Supply manipulatives to concretely represent concepts
* Provide opportunities for continued practice in a variety of settings
* Teach social and daily living skills
* Match expectations to instruction (i.e. accommodations and modifications)
* Use peer-tutoring, inclusive methods, and family involvement
