6. Copyright Law
“the exclusive and assignable legal right, given to the originator for a fixed number of years, to print,
publish, perform, film, or record literary, artistic, or musical material.” - Google’s Definition.
Due to this law i will have to get permission from the artist of the music i used and i will also have to
credit them. This therefore means that if I want to use the song Mac Miller - Senior Skip Day it
means that i will have to contact Mac Miller’s record label and ask for permission to use the song
for my music video and also i will have to state that it is only for educational purposes and that no
profit is intended and will not be made.
7. Conclusion
In my music institution research i have found out that the most popular and also the main music institutions
focus on mainly all of the types of music genres however POP and Hip-Hop are the most popular genres
nowadays. Although there are many other genres which are also popular these two have been the two most
common like genres and therefore i have chosen to base my music video on a genre which is mainly known
in the UK and it is called Grime. I have chosen to create a music video based on the Grime genre as this
genre is fairly popular in the UK and it is also liked by many teenagers and young adults which is my target
audience that i am focusing on, therefore this is a perfect match as the genre will fit in well with the target
audience. During my research i have found that making a music video is not so easy as i have to keep in
mind the copyright law and this is because i cannot use another artist's music without their permission and
without crediting them. Therefore if i want to use another artist's music i will have to contact them and ask for
permission to use their music and i will also have to credit them and this is because we don't owe any rights of
the artist’s music. Therefore we need permission from the people that we record so that we can put them in
the music video and also be careful with the music we use. Also most of the Grime music videos are
performance or sometimes performance/narrative and therefore i have decided to make my music video a
performance type and also throw in some narrative but not a lot. I have chosen to focus on the performance
as it fits the genre (Grime) as the camera most of the time is focused on the grime artist performing. However
there will be bits of narrative to show the story behind the lyrics so that the music videos is more effective
towards the audience and so that they understand more of what is going on with the artist.
