users must accept the TOU
and Privacy Policy
The Terms Of Use is made up of 4916 words.
The Privacy Policy is made up of 2597 words.
A survey found that only 7% of users read the Terms
and Policies when signing up to online platforms
(Smithers, 2011).

By completing the signup process, Instagram
assumes you have read and understood the
TOU and Privacy Policy, even if you have not.

money by selling a sub-license of your content, but will
not pay you.

We can delete your account whenever we want. When you
decide to delete your account, your private photo’s and videos
can still show up on the internet.

When you sign up to Instagram, your profile settings are
automatically set to Public.
Changing your privacy settings from Public to Private may stop
Instagram from exploiting your content, but your personal
information may still be collected and sold to third-parties.
Even then, there are websites dedicated to revealing content on
profiles set to Private, i.e. instaspy.com &
instaprivateprofileviewer.com

PROTECT YOURSELF
Organisations such as Instagram will collect as much personal
information they legally can, and sell it in order to generate
revenue (Privacy Rights Clearinghouse, 2015).
When using social media sites such as Instagram:
• Read important policies, or find out what others think about them.
• Always choose the highest level of privacy offered.
• Reveal as little as possible.
• Turn features such as geotagging OFF.
