The document discusses intellectual property rights and innovation. It outlines 9 areas that make up Crafitti's innovation landscape, including ideas, inventions, strategy, and networks. Intellectual property rights are described as lying at an important intersection of technology, business, and law. The value of intellectual property is explained as reflecting both current performance and future potential. The intellectual property value chain of protecting and exploiting ideas, expressions, and intellectual property through various mechanisms like copyrights, trademarks, trade secrets, and patents is also summarized.

As a company, if you feel the ambition to make or develop smart products, you encounter several challenges while doing so. This presentation wants to give you some inspiration in order to select some relevant topics in the context of building smart product for your company.
Introducing smart products involves many different aspects. It is often a more complex discussion than on enabling technologies alone. It can require rethinking of the actual technology & product development, of organizational, engineering & design aspects or even impact your current business model, revenue streams or the market your are in. On the other hand you as a company might be in possession of technology that can enable other companies to create smart products.
Future of End- User IT: Value with Choice, Productivity with PayoffsGlen Koskela
Future of End- User IT: Value with Choice, Productivity with Payoffs
Trends like cloud computing, consumerization, social media and mobile devices are changing our work environment. End-user technology is becoming stateless. Technology provisioning and even some data storage is moving out of the enterprise and into the public. Virtual workspaces and personal clouds offer device independent platforms for collaboration, information, office and business services – supporting new value structures and communities to improve personal and organizational productivity. How to reshape end-user IT to manage choice and where to focus the lifetime spend when end-user IT value is driven by payoffs, not by enforced rules?
National Institute of Design conducted a day long workshop - the fourth in the series - on Design Protection. I made a presentation of IP regimes for innovator/designer. It indeed was a an interesting experience to interact with design community in Delhi area.

CRAFITTI INNOVATION TIPS are our (http://www.crafitti.com) learning from multiple "innovation adventures" in applying structured and natural ways of solving problems. We don’t PREACH innovation - we actually do it with all the minds working with us. With a key motto of empowering ideas together, these INNOTIPS may look strange from specific viewpoints - but believe us - each InnoTIP has germinated in our sweat and hard work in creating successful change that we wanted to see in the world around us.
Resolving an Attrition Crisis with Enterprise SNA: A Case StudyCrafitti Consulting
Post acquisition, the IT SME was looking to grow but was hit by recessionary forces. Employee motivation levels were low and attrition had reached crisis proportions. An analysis of internal enterprise social networks provided interesting insights to solve this very complex problem.
Ideation presents two key challenges:
1. How to circumvent brain barriers to generate new thoughts?
2. How to reach the best ideas faster?
To overcome these challenges the brain needs some triggers. Triggers can come from multiple sources. e.g. Edward De Bono's Provocation Operators (Lateral Thinking) help explore new pathways. Similarly, brain writing and scenario building help multiple brains come together synchronously to generate new alternate futures. FInally, The Theory of Inventive Problem Solving (TRIZ) provides a rich and extremely powerful framework to analyze and solve problems. Put together, they are a deadly combination to trigger ideas!
Supply chains invariably demonstrate a demand-supply variability called the bull-whip effect - the effect increases in magnitude as we move farther away from the customer in the supply chain. Some of the causes and implications of the bull whip effect are discussed here.
P.W.Anderson states in his classic paper titled "More is Different" - The ability to reduce everything to simple fundamental laws does not imply the ability to start from those laws and reconstruct the universe. He further states - The constructionist hypothesis breaks down when confronted with the twin difficulties of scale and complexity. The behavior of large and complex aggregates of elementary particles, it turns out, is not to be understood in terms of simple extrapolation of the properties of a few particles. Instead, at each level of complexity entirely new properties appear, and the understanding of the new behaviors requires research (fundamental).
Complex systems are characterized by:
Extraordinary decentralization
Inherently conflicting, unknowable and diverse requirements
Continuous evolution and deployment
Heterogeneous, inconsistent, and changing elements
Erosion of people/system boundary
Normal failures
New paradigms for acquisition and policy
Thus far our methods to confront complexity have been based on reductionism or analysis, determinism, dualism, correspondence theory of knowledge and rationality – analytical and logical thinking as we know it. They have worked well for us in the past and continue to drive our approaches to problem solving, change creation and innovation.
However, the new age of innovation warrants newer methods to deal with complexity. These new methods are likely to be based on a deeper understanding of indeterminacy, non-linearity, chaos, adaptation, self-organization and distributed intelligence.
Crafitti provides an integrated approach to Ultra-large scale systems design using the Lean Inventive Systems Thinking Framework.
This was presented at the DesignFirst Conference 2008 held at Bangalore.
The workbook leads the user through an Advanced Patent Analysis activity using elements of TRIZ - The Theory of Inventive Problem Solving. It can be applied to any patent and used for patent analysis, patent design-around and strengthening of patents.
