He made the “huge decision” to leave the army
because he wanted more career choice and freedom.
He said: “It’s quite a career change, but there are so

events are keys to both roles, along with a strong
work ethic and discipline.
“I’m really enjoying my new job, which is going well.
I know I still have a lot to learn, but I can see a career
path all the way to site manager and with the training
Persimmon is providing I am confident I will achieve it.”

Ex service personnel build their careers with us
Luke Homer joined Persimmon Homes Southern in the
technical department as a Layout Planner in 2014.
A Royal Engineer and Reservist, Luke has served
around the world and most recently was deployed to
Afghanistan in his role as a bomb disposal expert.
Luke is based in the Camberley office and is
responsible for all aspects of planning developments
from house layouts to the location of roads and
amenities. He brings a wealth of skills to the role
having trained as an architectural consultant during a
ten year gap from the army.
Whilst continuing to serve as a reservist Luke is
relishing his role at Persimmon: “This is my first time
working for a housing developer and it is fascinating
to be part of taking a development from a blank sheet
of paper to a successful planning application.
“A planning role
is very different
to searching for
and disposing of
bombs but the work
ethic, the discipline
needed and time
management, are
all skills that serve
equally well in both
professions.”

6. Nikki Butler started
working for
Persimmon Homes
North Midlands
after deciding to
leave the Army.
She enlisted as an
18 year old and
worked as a Royal
Logistics Corp driver
serving in various
regiments. Now she is enjoying a more stable family
life after the birth of her daughter Jessica, aged three.
Nikki said: “I loved my years in the army and served in
the UK, Germany and Cyprus. I drove various vehicles
including Land Rovers and 14 tonne vehicles, 4T
Bedford, 8T DAF and DROPS vehicles.
“I also completed exercises in Wales, Poland, the
Falklands, Cyprus, Bavaria and other countries around
the world and competed in Royal Logistic Corps alpine
ski championships, including Slalom and Super-G.
“I have also carried out Queen’s Guard duties
at Buckingham Palace, St James’s Palace, Windsor
Castle and the Tower of London. It was a great job,
day to day, and I really enjoyed it.
“I decided to leave the army after starting a family
as I wanted something with more stability. I really
enjoy working as a Sales Advisor and meeting a
huge variety of customers. It is great helping people
buy their dream home. I have just gained my NVQ in
Sales and I believe I am one of the first in the group to
achieve it after studying for the past year.”
Sherrie Hankin, head of sales at Persimmon Homes
North Midlands, said: “Nikki is a great member of my
team and the drive and commitment she developed
in the army can be seen in her work here, especially in
gaining her NVQ.”

Kage Brennan is a Trainee Site Manager for
Persimmon Homes South Coast at its Picket 20
development in Andover.
Kage joined the company in 2014, after a four year
career in the army.
The former Royal Marines Commando from
Portsmouth served in Afghanistan for seven months
at the end of 2012, as well as being based at Taunton,
Poole and Lympstone.
Kage said: “If I hadn’t gone into the Royal Marines,
I would have looked for a career in the construction
industry, so when I decided to leave the army, it
seemed like the obvious career choice.
“There are many
similarities between
the two jobs; you
have to be organised
and be good at
dealing with people
and the army gave
me a taste of the
importance of the
chain of command.
“I’m really
enjoying working
for Persimmon
and learning so much. My intention is to progress
my career all the way to site manager and run a
development of my own.”
