2. GUIDING QUESTION
What are different methods/instructional practices to increase
student reading comprehension skills through an iPad?
3. INTRODUCTION
Goal of reading is good comprehension
Comprehension has many factors
-Decoding
-Fluency
-Critical Thinking
Engaging, hands-on approaches create technology opportunities
Teachers must become experts of technology to model technology in classroom
“We need to embrace technology to make learning more engaging. Because
when students are engaged and they are interested, that’s where the learning takes
place.” -UNKNOWN
4. INTRODUCTION CONT.
The now digitalized world is making kids excellent techy gurus
SMART boards, tablets, document cameras, and iPads integration are
happening all over
iPads provide many different resources for literacy through apps
Technology create student-centered classroom environments
Provides high student engagement and attentiveness
This, used positively, can achieve better quality reading comprehension
5. GETTING STARTED
Goals need to reflect student learning
Clearly stated what apps and student interaction looks like
Choose apps for appropriate times of lessons
iPad apps to create are the new pencil and paper
“The learning process would be the same as writing by pencil directly
on paper, but doing the work on an iPad is motivating and reinforces the
idea that it’s not just for entertainment but a thinking and learning tool”
(Kutner, 2013)
6. APP SELECTION
So many apps makes the selection overwhelming
Educators want to make sure that they grade level appropriate,
common core aligned, and developmentally appropriate
Reading comprehension is understanding the details
iTunes has many reading comprehension apps, most cost, though
The descriptions on them are very accurate
Not a lot of selection for grade 3 and below
7. APP SELECTION CONT.
Kids can create their own book trailer through many different apps
while they are guided by teacher’s learning targets
“I have my kids do it at the end of a story during their
independent time. Not only does it have them engaged, but I am also
teaching them time management skills,. They have to finish each daily
part in order for the video to be turned in on time. It is a great
reflection of what all they comprehend while we read the story.” –
KIM STIFFLER, 2nd grade teacher
8. CLOSING
Pencil/Paper days are becoming numbered
Educators need to embrace change because it is happening
inevitably
Growth mindset with the educators where it creates a techy
classroom
Hands-on, engaging activities is where learning takes place
Serve the children you teach through these opportunities
