The document discusses the radical shift in information technology (IT) for education due to democratization and increased access. IT is now ubiquitous, with services available anywhere through the cloud from various providers rather than just educational institutions. This has implications for the types of IT services universities should provide and how they are delivered. It provides examples of steps taken by SURF, a non-profit organization in the Netherlands, to modernize IT services and infrastructure for higher education in response to these changes, such as shared authentication, collaboration tools, and open access publishing support.
De kracht van ICT opent nieuwe gebruiksmogelijkheden en leidt tot gedragsverandering. Dit heeft consequenties voor de wetenschappelijke informatievoorziening en de ICT-dienstverlening in het hoger onderwijs en onderzoek.

eScience, Education and Knowledge ManagementLeo Plugge
The document discusses how information and communication technologies (ICT) have changed research and education by enabling knowledge sharing and collaboration through e-science. It describes how ICT facilitates a knowledge-driven research infrastructure by allowing data and resources to be shared over grids and clouds. This has industrialized information technology and increased the number of services available to researchers from global repositories and suppliers in the cloud.
HEUGCloud services the democratization of it (heug)Leo Plugge
Cloud services are disrupting the traditional IT model by providing on-demand, scalable services over the internet. This represents a paradigm shift similar to the transition from regional electricity monopolies to competitive energy markets. Higher education institutions should rethink which IT services they provide and consider outsourcing non-essential services to public cloud providers. This allows institutions to focus on their core missions of education and research rather than operating complex IT infrastructure. Adopting cloud services also meets users' priorities of flexibility, accessibility, and low costs over control of the underlying infrastructure. Institutions must prepare their IT organizations for this changing landscape by developing new expertise in service coordination, architecture, and market knowledge.
The document summarizes key lessons learned from a visit to the IT operations center for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics. It discusses 4 main lessons: 1) operational excellence comes before innovation for mission-critical systems, 2) partnership and trust between organizations is crucial, 3) awareness of project phases/milestones is important, and 4) thorough testing of systems, people and procedures is needed. The Olympics provides an example of successfully delivering large-scale, time-critical IT through meticulous planning, focus on quality over features/costs, and not cutting corners in testing or risk management. These lessons can help improve IT project management in higher education.
Cloud services: the democratization of ITLeo Plugge
The document discusses the rise of cloud computing and cloud services, which allow capability and IT resources to be delivered over the internet on-demand. This represents a shift away from traditional centralized IT production and provisioning by individual institutions towards a model where resources are pooled and accessed over the network. This paradigm shift is disruptive and could cause some institutions to miss opportunities if they do not adapt. The document advocates that institutions should analyze what services students and faculty truly need and want, in order to determine what capabilities to provide directly versus outsourcing to cloud providers.
eInfranet cloud services – current state of affairsLeo Plugge
The document discusses the current state of cloud computing and its implications. It notes that cloud computing is transforming IT provisioning from centralized local models to flexible, wide-area models delivered as utilities. This reflects the industrialization and commoditization of computing resources. Major players like Google, Microsoft and Amazon now dominate cloud production and distribution, mirroring trends in other utility industries. The document argues that cloud services could enable more flexible innovation if universities embrace this new model and rethink security and services.
Openness a principle in need for a code of conductLeo Plugge
The document discusses the concept of openness and some of its principles. It notes that openness presupposes a common interest and agreement on how resources and information can be accessed, used and shared. The document outlines several examples of openness in areas like education, research, data and infrastructure. It argues that openness is an important concept but requires cooperation, coordination and agreed upon policies to be successful.
Cloud Services - The Democratization of ITLeo Plugge
The document discusses cloud services and how they represent a paradigm shift for delivering IT capabilities. Cloud services provide software, platforms, and infrastructure on demand through scalable, elastic cloud-based systems. This allows users to access services through the internet rather than maintaining their own IT systems. For universities, cloud services may be more cost effective and better meet user needs and expectations than traditional internal IT systems. However, some IT administrators view cloud services as risky since they give up control over servers, data storage, security, and service levels. Overall, the document argues that cloud services will disrupt traditional IT models and that universities should rethink what services they need to provide internally versus utilizing public cloud options.
The Ultimate Creation. UCM Tough Talks 07-10-2008Leo Plugge
The document discusses the inevitable evolution of humans and technology, and questions what kind of creations this evolution will produce. It notes that computer processing power is exponentially increasing and will surpass human brain capacity by 2020. While this could enable the creation of robot slaves or masters, the speaker argues this would make humans obsolete. Instead, the inevitable evolution may lead humans to become equals with their own creations.
Future Perspective in Information Technology (1998)Leo Plugge
The document discusses future applications of agent technology to support European police cooperation. It describes how individual police officers could have personal agents to assist with communication, information sharing, and decision making. The agents would allow officers in the field to quickly access databases and communicate with other officers and agencies. While the technology exists, challenges include differences between countries, legal issues, cost, and gaining acceptance from police leaders and officers. Overall, the talk aimed to inform police about emerging technologies that could transform their work in the coming years.
Who Controls The Demand Pull And Supply Push In E LearningLeo Plugge
The document discusses the shifting control over e-learning and who is driving demand and supply in the e-learning field. It notes that most believe control is shifting and that various groups, including educators, researchers, governments, students, employers and parents all play a role in both driving demand and pushing supply simultaneously. The document also examines challenges in implementing innovations in education and increasing the impact of educational research on customers' needs.
