Cooperation
btw gov. and
private sector
Out of 200 future promising industries, select 13 sectors which potentially create new jobs and
where both large and small and medium companies can be simultaneously grown
Common standards: market potential (market size in 2020), comparative advantage, creative
economy industrial ecosystem(opportunity to SMEs), ripple effect (employment inducement
coefficient)
Selection
standard
Strategic industries: 9 sectors which have peculiar industrial quality and can build a large-scale
industrial ecosystem (5G, offshore plant, smart car, intelligent robot, wearable smart device,
tangible contents, wellness, disaster safety, renewable hybrid power system)
Based industries: 4 sectors which have peculiar industrial quality and can create synergy effect by
being combined by other various sectors (intelligent semiconductor, future smart convergence
material, intelligent IoT, big data)

related to beauty/life health, 28 cases related to electrical and
electronics, 11 cases related to chemicals/energy)
Nara M-Tech Co.Ltd. (CEO: Mr. KIM Youngjo), a ESS, component
for EV production company, applied LG’s 7 patents related to
battery packaging case technology provided for free, to their
production development, in January 2015.
LG established ‘manufacturing technology support zone’ in
Choongcheongbuk-do innovation center in order to strengthen
the competitiveness of ventures/SMEs and to support them
providing LG Electronics’ devices and know-how.

LG Display Cluster in Paju has brought about innovation in
collaboration with Japanese companies.
Paju Display Cluster invited Japanese
company
Opening Ceremony of Paju Electric Glass, a joint
company between LG and Nippon Electric Glass
(NEG) (2005.8)
Paju became a developed cluster as a LCD
manufacturing station, where companies of related
components and material are concentrated.
LG produced 55-inch OLED TV Panel for the first time in
the world in January, 2013, where factories such as
Japanese Idemitsu Kosan built in Paju, collaborated with LG.
LG Display organized ‘2016 LG Display Tech Forum’ last
September, by inviting cooperative companies such as
Merck, Asahi Glass, Nitto, Idemitsu, Sumitomo and so on.
The Cluster brought innovation through
OLED production for TV
16. LG Economic Research Institute
Korean government induces a nation-wise innovation,
concentrating the budget related to the future creative technology
into IoT, green, and healthcare sectors, for the purpose of
strengthening the science & technology base.
Concentrate IoT, Green,
Healthcare
Focus on innovation of traditional
business and creation of new
business through IT and convergence
Concentrate building division of
labor between large company
and SME
Strengthen an innovation base in
order to jump up to become
innovator
Innovation Strategy in Korea had switched from ‘improving’
strategy to chase the developed countries into ‘promoting
innovator’ strategy to explore a new business. Korea is
concentrating on creating innovation base.
Building a division of labor ecosystem between large
company and SME is more focused on rather than
designating intuitively some industries to induce
innovation.
Traditional manufacturing industries are upgraded by
applying IT or by the convergence with new technologies,
while new industries are created.
