The lanthanide contraction is the steady decrease in atomic radius that occurs for the lanthanide elements from cerium to lutetium. This contraction is caused by the poor shielding of the f electrons, which allows the nuclear charge to more strongly attract the outer electrons. The consequences of the lanthanide contraction include slight variations in chemical properties that allow separation of lanthanides, as well as increasing melting and boiling points across the series.
