The Hitchhicker’s Guide to Windows Azure Mobile Services | FalafelCON 2014FalafelSoftware
Windows Azure Mobile Services provides a straightforward way to connect your data to multiple applications on multiple devices. In this presentation, I will show how to expose cloud data via a REST interface and connect to that data from applications running on Windows Phone, Windows 8, iOs and Android. You will learn how to secure your data and to send push notification to your client application.
The document discusses key considerations for designing APIs for Internet of Things (IoT) applications. It notes that IoT environments have characteristics like low power, limited bandwidth, many asynchronous messages between autonomous connected systems. Effective API design for IoT should take these characteristics into account and determine factors like where a device will be used, whether it needs cloud connectivity, and whether computations are better done locally or in the cloud. The document emphasizes that API design for IoT needs to focus on simplicity, ease of use, and allowing access to valuable resources and data to get the "job done" for users and developers.

The Great Mobile Debate: Native vs. Hybrid App DevelopmentNick Landry
It’s not easy being a mobile developer. iOS and Android dominate the market, Windows Phone is climbing into third place, and we’re not really sure if BlackBerry still matters. Do you focus on one platform or many? What size of the mobile population do you really want to reach? Each mobile platform comes with its own programming languages, SDKs, IDEs and application lifecycle & architecture. Are we really expected to learn all of this? Isn’t HTML5 supposed to be the Silver Bullet so we can finally write apps once and run them everywhere? This session will demystify all these questions, walking you through the modern mobile ecosystem, and explore your options as a developer. We’ll review the native story on each major platform, discuss the pros & cons of both mobile native and web development, cover some of the cross-platform solutions available to developers, and explore best practices and guidelines to insure a successful mobile strategy. Don’t just blindly pick a side or assume that “one size fits all”, this session covers one of the most hotly contested debates in modern IT. Come join us and be a part of the conversation.

Infinum iOS Talks #2 - Xamarin by Ivan ĐikićInfinum
The document discusses three common approaches to mobile app development: native, hybrid, and Xamarin. It focuses on explaining the Xamarin approach. Key points:
- Xamarin allows writing apps in C# that can target iOS and Android from a single codebase.
- It works by compiling to a common language runtime and using platform invocation to call native platform APIs.
- Developers get access to the full native platform functionality while sharing most of the app's code across platforms.
Infinum iOS Talks #1 - Swift under the hood: Method Dispatching by Vlaho PolutaInfinum
This document discusses method dispatching in Swift. It explains that method dispatch determines which method is invoked in response to a message. In C++ and Objective-C, methods can use static or dynamic dispatch. Static dispatch is determined at compile-time, while dynamic dispatch is determined at runtime. The document also shows how Swift can generate Objective-C classes and use the runtime, with Swift classes being Objective-C classes under the hood. It demonstrates through benchmarks that Swift code can be as fast or faster than equivalent Objective-C code.
Infinum iOS Talks #1 - Swift done right by Ivan DikicInfinum
The document discusses four main pillars of Swift programming: value types, higher-order functions, protocols, and generics. For value types, it explains that structs and enums keep unique copies of data unlike classes which share data. It provides examples of higher-order functions like map, filter and reduce. Protocols are described as a way to achieve composition over inheritance in Swift. Generics allow writing type-agnostic code through placeholders like <T>. Optionals represent the concept of nothingness in Swift by allowing a type to hold either a value or nothing.

Measures in SQL (SIGMOD 2024, Santiago, Chile)Julian Hyde
SQL has attained widespread adoption, but Business Intelligence tools still use their own higher level languages based upon a multidimensional paradigm. Composable calculations are what is missing from SQL, and we propose a new kind of column, called a measure, that attaches a calculation to a table. Like regular tables, tables with measures are composable and closed when used in queries.
SQL-with-measures has the power, conciseness and reusability of multidimensional languages but retains SQL semantics. Measure invocations can be expanded in place to simple, clear SQL.
To define the evaluation semantics for measures, we introduce context-sensitive expressions (a way to evaluate multidimensional expressions that is consistent with existing SQL semantics), a concept called evaluation context, and several operations for setting and modifying the evaluation context.
