Briefing letter
I give BBB and Indiegogo permission to use the temporary emails in order log-in and watch
the Youtube videos and documents –not to use as an email service. I have sent all material
again from my slideshare account. It is in private mode. temporaryBBB2@gmail.com

My background
My name is Jan Softa and I am the owner of Somerco Research Ltd which is based in London
UK. In this company, I have for a few years run a social community for professionals, with
people’s profiles, uploaded pdf files and videos and to find these professionals and files you
use a search engine as on many other sites. I also do lobbying in EU in issues about
communication infrastructure and so on.
Campaign
Since March 2014, I have worked on launching a global trade tour for crowd funders,
entrepreneurs, scientists, companies, industry associations, governmental agencies and
investors. To get funding to launch this trade tour, I decided to crowdfund for £1 000 000 on
Indiegogo. I decided to start the campaign on the 18th
of May 2015 and end it 40 days later.
The campaign was active until the 27th of June.
On Indiegogo’s website, I wrote in all information about my campaign, gave my bank details
and activated the campaign. I have a confirmation email that says it has been activated.
The campaign name is: Pitchtour – travel and sell with other companies.
Long link: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/pitchtour-travel-and-sell-with-other-
companies--3#/story
Short link: http://igg.me/at/pitchtour
People could find my campaign if I provide them one of the direct links above in an email or
on social media. Besides this, I worked off-line in London with handing out flyers to business
incubators and at business networking events as launch22, a salesforce event and so on.1
Feedback
On the 1st of June in 2015, I emailed Indiegogo regarding that my campaign does not become
visible when you do a search on their search engine. They emailed me that they base
campaigns visibility on an algorithm known as the Gogo factor and there was a link to the
page The Gogo factor.2
See more info under the headline Gogo factors.
Calculation
According to industry sources, Indiegogo have about 12,7 million monthly visits on desktop.
It means 12 700 000 = 416 393/day x 40 days = 16 655 720 visitors. Besides this traffic
source, you can also download Indiegogo’s apps on Itunes and Google play. I have not found

any statistics on Itunes or Similarweb for downloads and web traffic. I have found statistics
from Google play regarding downloads. It is 100 000 – 500 000 downloads. There are no
stats for the web traffic. It is clear that these apps increase the traffic to the featured
campaigns. It is a great amount of missed potential contributors to not be on Indiegogo. For a
campaigner, to achieve that amount of traffic to their campaign is probably impossible.3
Operation
Below, I focus on presenting how important parts of Indiegogo operate. I discuss phases,
algorithm, Gogo factors, search engine & browsing, categories and rows.
Phases
A campaign on Indiegogo is divided into different phases when it regards its campaign
length. You find these in newly launched, in a middle phase and in the phase final
countdown. In newly launched, I have seen campaigns up to 7 days after its launch and in
final countdown campaigns are for 10 days, which would mean that those campaigns in-
between these time periods are in the middle. For campaigns in newly launch, in the middle
phase and final countdown I have documentation that shows a campaign do not need to have
at least contributions after 48h to be searchable.
Search engine & browsing
I will state the obvious, it is normal to use search engines to find content on websites. It
normally increases the chance to find specific content that you would like to have a look at.
For instance, wine tasting. So to do a search for wine tasting then the Gogo factor decide
what campaigns that are relevant for those search words. After your search you can browse
from one campaign to another and then to another. It increases the traffic to your campaign
and are pretty much standard for how a website operates.
During the 40 day campaign, I did many searches on other as well as my own campaign. I
tried to search for pitchtour and for pitchtour – travel and sell with others companies. I tried
as logged-out and as logged-in and I did not see my campaign after the mandatory 48h.
When you do a search, currently running campaigns and ended campaigns compete for what
the gogo factor decides to list and give exposure. You find campaigns that ended years ago,
which is interesting from an activity point of view.
Algorithm
Indiegogo’s algorithm operates so that you not necessarily will see what is on the Indiegogo
homepage. It is a choice they have made. The algorithm is known as the Gogo factor and
determines what should be visible and searchable. The first rule is: after the first 48 hours,
your campaign needs at least two contributions to be searchable on Indiegogo. If that rule is
met you compete with other campaigns and the Gogo factor measure criteria that is divided
into a total sum of 50% external and a total sum of 50% internal.
Gogo factors4
In their own words:
3
See further down, the print screens Similar web, Itunes Indiegogo and also Google Play Indiegogo.
4
I want to point out that most agree that there is a difference between the homepage and the main page. The
main page is the first landing page and the home page includes everything on the website.

The gogofactor is an algorithm that helps campaigns achieve greater visibility on Indiegogo.com—and reach
audiences who may find them interesting.
The gogofactor is influenced by several aspects, including the scope of a campaign’s social engagement (such as
Facebook likes and shares), and global reach.
You can help boost your gogofactor by following these tips:
Share your campaign link and encourage your community to share to drive traffic to your campaign.
Post updates about your campaign and spread the word through social media.
Be sure to offer perks that would engage your audience and help encourage them to contribute.5
On my own, I found a blogpost6
from Indiegogo with more info:
The gogofactor is an algorithm that tracks activity – everything from how much gets funded on your campaign
page, to promotions, comments and how frequently you update.
The higher your gogofactor, the more promotion you get from Indiegogo, and the higher your chances are at
earning the coveted Indiegogo effect!’
‘But wait, I’ve done all that!’ you say? That means you’re rocking the internal drivers that you the campaign
owner controls (frequency of updates, number of videos, the number of team members as part of your
campaign) but this leaves the other 50% of factors up to the external activities (pageviews, number of funders,
% of goal completed). And remember, your position in the gogofactor chain is relative to how other campaigns
are driving their activity.7
Category
When you visit Indiegogo’s website you find different categories you sign up your
campaign too. I chose technology.
When you browse Indiegogo you will see you can filter the content into different
categories as film, technology and so on and also filter into newly launched, final
countdown and so on.
When you use the search engine it does not list campaigns in a particular category. It
does not filter the content in this way, it mixes all categories. It means a category
factor is not relevant for searches.
In the video entitled Indiegogo22, made when there was 5 days left of my campaign
you see I scrolled down through all campaigns in the category technology in final
countdown. You see they end within 10 days. All these became listed after you click
the buttons explore on Indiegogo’s main page and then technology and final
countdown. You could not find my campaign here.
Rows
To make campaigns visible and easy to browse between on Indiegogo these are displayed in
different rows on top of each other. In the phase final countdown you can see different
amount of campaigns in the rows.
Videos & Printscreens
I have not made any videos of my campaign during the first 2 days, but I have videos of other
campaigns that are newly launched. When it regards those campaigns that are in the middle
phase and the final countdown I have videos and print screens of others as well as my own

campaign. In all these different phases you see that after the first 48 hours, your campaign
needs at least two contributions to be searchable on Indiegogo does not always apply.
In order to check how the relativity factor operates, I have followed campaigns in final
countdown for days. I did this by browsing Indiegogo’s website and I also did a keyword
search for the campaigns I monitored.8
I found these campaigns regardless if they were active
or not, which you can see in social media shares, updates, number of videos. The same
campaigns were possible to browse and search for all the time.
Moreover, in the videos you will see that when you do a search you find a mix of campaigns
that currently are running with those that ended, some years ago. There are both those that
has reached and not reached their funding goal. For searches, it would mean currently
running campaigns do not just compete with each other.
My campaign has been hurt by it has not been possible to browse from one page to another to
find it and by it has not been listed in the search results.
8
To mentions a few examples you will see campaigns like Sipscore…, Rot Monger, Radio Sevojno, Help is
needed for 3-year-old Sophia and so on.

Notes to print screens and videos.
In the videos you see me changing browser from time to time, which I do to save time.
I have recorded over 70 videos and its purpose is to collect evidence and to show how
different functionalities on Indiegogo operate.
When it concern how a search engine operates search words so called letter combination is an
important factor. By this, I mean a common letter combination list more links on search
engines than a specific letter combination. To make it easier to understand I have simplified it
by dividing it into wide used narrow/specific search words. Examples on wide used search
words are wine, bike and narrow/specific are pitchtour, wripple, suli, rot monger. In the
videos you will see these search words. To drive traffic to your campaign you want people
you contact to find them by the keywords they search on and then they can browse from one
campaign to another.
I have used Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Viadeo, Xing and Innovatiobglobalnetwork to
share my campaign link and get a good global reach for the campaign. The global reach is a
factor mentioned as part of the Gogo factor. I also have campaign videos on Youtube and
Vimeo that helps improve the global reach.
For those, unfamiliar with Viadeo (68 million members and are popular in French speaking
parts of the world and in South America) and Xing (14 million members and are popular in
the German speaking part of the world) are used to boost the global reach.9
While these two
social media platforms are more focused on language areas Facebook, Twitter and also
LinkedIn has more of a global reach. Innovationglobalnetwork is a specialized social media
for professionals who work with innovation.
In the first videos, I did not record all my statistics for my campaign as the social media
shares on mine and others campaign pages. These statistics include everybody’s sharing of
campaigns. However, I have statistics of my own activity on social media10
and I have also
print screened all other campaigns that was in video Indiegogo22. In the print screens, you
can see the visible statistics. The exception is a visible campaign window with the title
Closed, thanks. I have a printscreen from when you have an invalid message.
In the videos, I do searches when I am logged-out and logged-in on Indiegogo. I wanted to
test if there was any difference in the search results. You will see, it does not make a
difference and are therefore not a factor.

I need to point out that besides printscreens of social media statistics I have an excel document entitled:

Closed, thanks
It seems to be possible to change the name of a campaign link. Those campaigners who chose
to not run their campaign anymore and want to leave that message, why not build in so when
they change the campaign title they also can click in that info and then take them out of the
competition? Maybe have a step that asks: are you going to continue to run your campaign
with a different title or do you want to leave a message it is closed. It is a solution that does
not require that those who want to close now, but relaunch later has to delete their campaign.
However, this campaign link later had a message where did it go.
Search design
There seems to be a design change on the webpage after searches that were not on my videos.
I assume Indiegogo has opted to put in filter functions that separate the different types of
campaigns in searches. It could be a different technical solution than to rewrite the code for
the algorithm, known as the Gogo factor, so it separate campaigns without clicking in these
options.

You will see an email confirmation that they have received my email and their response. Here
they mention a gogofactor that can help increase your exposure and increase your search
ability on Indiegogo. A factor they mention is that likes and shares on social media helps. In
the videos I recorded you see my shares on social media. I have documention with my
activity on twitter, facebook, LinkedIn and so on. Here you find that I have got likes,
retweets, favorites and was active every day on social media. You will see other campaigns
were not as active as on social media and turned up on searches on Indiegogo.

Case links
Here are links to cases and rulings in US and California that could be relevant.
In the first link article, they discuss construction flaws in software that can become a security
risk for those using the software. The construction flaw could lead to hacking of the software
and cause damages to those using it. However, it is considered acceptable to some degree to
have construction flaws when these security flaws are fixed continuously with patches.
I do not claim that Indiegogo has a construction flaw in its software that deemed a security
risk for its users when it concerns the gogo factor. It is rather that the construction of the
algorithm known as the Gogo factor does not operates as it should and it has an effect on
campaigns. I compare my campaign with others. As we see, in the dates of the video
and printscreens of Indiegogo’s webpage Gogo factor with its algorithm was constructed
some time/years ago. http://moosehead.cis.umassd.edu/cis580/readings/whoIsLiable.pdf

On 28/12/2015 Indegogo gave an answer to BBB and wrote . You see the web link address on the
printscreen below. I could not find some of the text Indiegogo sent when you click the link. This text
part: "because hundreds of campaigns launch on Indiegogo everyday, our browse pages are
designed to balance highlighting our healthiest campaigns, while streamlining the browse
experience for contributors." Then the text continues. It ends with: We’ve outlined all this
information, here: https://support.indiegogo.com/hc/en-us/articles/206612947-How-can-I-
find-my-campaign
The purpose with this section is to find out if Google’s search engine can find the text instead. To
test if Google could find text from Indiegogo’s website I searched on what you do find on this link:
On Indiegogo search works by campaign title. If you are unable to find your campaign by title, you
may not have enough activity on your campaign page. After the first 48 hours, your campaign needs
at least two contributions to be searchable on Indiegogo. Google found this text, but not the one
above it.
In Indiegogo’s answer they provide a link at the end of that text. The link in their answer goes to this:
As you can see further down on the third print screen from here you do not find the text I searched
for on Google. It seems to be no problem for Google to find other text on Indiegogo. As a test, I
searched on: On Indiegogo search works by campaign title. If you are unable to find your campaign

by title, you may not have enough activity on your campaign page. After the first 48 hours, your
campaign needs at least two contributions to be searchable on Indiegogo.
Google search engine listed this text from Indiegogo and it match the text what you find from the
link they have sent us. Google list it as the first source on Internet. Check the two first print screen
here after.
Below is a truncated search is done on the same search word I did just above. It only list one source.
These two searches shows Google do find content and list it as a first source.

Now I try to find some of the text gave in its answer to BBB. I could not find the text below in the link
that was used as a source for us to study. I have done a search on the text you see below and
Google’s search engine cannot find it. "because hundreds of campaigns launch on Indiegogo
everyday, our browse pages are designed to balance highlighting our healthiest campaigns,
while streamlining the browse experience for contributors."
A regular search with no truncated words on these search words. The following four print
screens include the search results from page 1 and 2 from using Google’s search engine. You
do not find any Indiegogo links to it.

A truncated search on the same search words as above. You do not find the text in any of the six
following printscreens. It is page 1 and 2 with these search words from using Google’s search
engine. You do not find any Indiegogo links to the text.

To test a bit more I have done a search on a smaller text part you see below and Google’s
search engine cannot find it. I searched on: while streamlining the browse experience for
contributors. It does not list the link or any source from Indiegogo on the first two pages. See the
following four printscreens.

This is a truncated search on "while streamlining the browse experience for contributors." It does
not list the link as a source or anything else from Indiegogo. The following five printscreens shows
results from page 1 and 2 from using Google’s search engine. It does not list the link as a
source or anything else from Indiegogo.

Below I do a truncated search on "while streamlining the browse experience for contributors." And
here I have added on Indiegogo in the search outside the text that I had truncated. Again, it does not
list the link Indiegogo has provided as a source or any other Indiegogo source with the truncation.
Instead Google searched for the text without truncation, which it does when there is no exact
match. You find that Google list two other Indiegogo sources, but not the link that they have
mentioned before. Even if it is not the same link I check these two sources and you do not find the
text I was searching for. I have printscreened these two sources. See the following five print screens.

Here is the Indiegogo source that turns up as a source with a link that is different from what was in
BBB text. You do not find the text here either. https://support.indiegogo.com/hc/en-

I have done a search on the text you see below and Google’s search engine cannot find it.
"because hundreds of campaigns launch on Indiegogo everyday, our browse pages are designed to
balance highlighting our healthiest campaigns," This is a truncated search and Google’s search
engine does not list the link Indiegogo provided or any other Indiegogo source as truncated. When it
does not find anything that is truncated it instead search for what it can find on Indiegogo without
narrowing it down to that particular phrase. It find links to two old campaigns that list.
