Navigating the Dynamics of India's IVD Market
The Indian In-Vitro Diagnostics (IVD) market stands robust
at a staggering 80,000 Crores (9600 million USD), with
Hemostasis carving its niche at 500 Crores (60 Million
USD) and showcasing a commendable 10-14% Compound
Annual Growth Rate (CAGR).
Within this landscape, coagulation emerges as a key pillar,
poised to be continually lead in the IVD market. The
commonly requested tests, including Prothrombin Time
(PT), Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time (APTT),
Fibrinogen (FIB), Thrombin Time (TT), and D-Dimer,
underscore the pivotal role of coagulation testing. Tertiary
care hospitals and referral labs are driving this demand,
seeking greater automation and integration, particularly for
esoteric coagulation tests like D-Dimer, Thrombotic Panel,
and APLA testing.
Coagulation tests serve critical purposes such as:
- Diagnosing Bleeding Disorders: Including inhibitor
screening.
- Monitoring Anticoagulant Therapies: Assessing the
effectiveness of ongoing treatments.
- Identifying Thrombo-embolic Diseases: Such as APCR
(Factor V mutation) or elevated Homocysteine levels.
- Pre-Surgery Screening: Essential for patients with
potential bleeding disorders.

continuous innovation, Operon Biotech and Healthcare has
evolved into a strong regional player, making its mark in
Karnataka. The company is resolute in replicating its
regional success across India and aims to extend its
footprint beyond the borders of Karnataka.
From Twist of Fate to Entrepreneurship
Mr Afser's entry into the IVD medical device industry was
an unexpected turn of events, a beautiful stroke of
serendipity. In the year 1998, he found himself in the field
of IVD not by choice but by a twist of fate while filling out
a credit card application form for the director of Rashmi
Diagnostics Pvt Ltd, a happening IVD company at the time.
Although the stint at Rashmi Diagnostics was brief, lasting
no more than a year, Mr Afser's trajectory continued as he
assumed the role of Marketing Manager at Rapid
Diagnostics Pvt Ltd. Here, he passionately continued his
focus on Haemostasis (Coagulation) products, contributing
significantly to market penetration and business
consolidation across India.
Rapid Diagnostics represented Sigma Diagnostics for its
Coagulation range in reagents and Amelung Gmbh for its
instrument range. In an interesting turn, Sigma Diagnostics
later acquired Amelung Gmbh, and the chain of acquisitions
eventually led to Trinity Biotech Plc, an Irish company
acquiring Sigma-Amelung brands. This sequence concluded
with a full circle, as Trinity Biotech Plc, in turn, was
acquired by the company, Diagnostica Stago, where Mr
Afser had started his professional journey.
He embarked on a new chapter after gaining profound
product knowledge and understanding specific customer
needs. Following a successful 9+ years at Rapid
Diagnostics, armed with a determination to create
something unique, Mr Afser laid the foundation for Operon
Biotech and Healthcare in August 2008. Thus, a journey
that began with a stroke of serendipity and a credit card
application form came full circle with establishing his own
venture.
Principles for Professional Excellence
For Mr Afser, whether in the capacity of an employee or as
an entrepreneur, his core beliefs and values have remained
consistent. These principles serve as the guiding light
through different roles, encapsulating a philosophy that

Challenges Faced by Indian MedTech Startups in the
Global Arena
Venturing on the journey of a MedTech startup in India, a
landscape brimming with innovation, promises, and
aspirations comes with its set of challenges. Among these, a
key hurdle standing prominently is the acute lack of
exposure to funds. This challenge, common among startups,
often becomes the decisive factor, dictating the pace of
growth and even leading to the downfall of many promising
ventures.
In the backdrop of India's historical reliance on imports,
another significant challenge surfaces – the absence of
certification and accreditation bodies equivalent to CE/FDA
standards. This absence acts as a red flag, requiring strategic
navigation for startups to establish credibility and meet
global benchmarks.
Market acceptance of "Made in India" products adds yet
another layer to the challenges. Overcoming preconceived
notions and establishing trust in the quality and innovation
of indigenous products becomes a continual uphill battle.
Further complicating the journey is the fierce competition
Operon Biotech

‘‘ ‘
‘
17. posed by foreign companies. The global stage,
while ripe with opportunities, also exposes
startups to intense competition, requiring them
to showcase unique value propositions to gain
a foothold.
The tendering system in India, often perceived
as unfriendly to startups, adds to the
complexities. Negotiating this landscape
demands resilience and strategic acumen to
navigate bureaucratic processes.
Innovation Amidst Challenges
India is emerging as a promising market,
attracting homegrown startups to carve a niche
in the unfolding opportunities. It's a period of
sustained endurance through the turbulent and
evolving times – a test where the "survival of
the fittest" theory finds a perfect fit.
The Indian government actively engages with
representatives like AIMED, adopting a
favourable environment for growth. Mr Asfer
firmly believes that this juncture offers the
ideal moment for young, ambitious
entrepreneurs to pioneer the new age of next-
generation medical devices.
The team at Dfine Bioinnovations Pvt Ltd
exemplifies this spirit, actively innovating and
navigating the challenges to not only withstand
the tides of time but to continuously evolve
and stay relevant. The "Do It In-house"
approach adopted during the development of
FibriTimer reflects a commitment to quality
and innovation, steering away from off-the-
shelf solutions. From an engineering
perspective, this approach presents a daunting
task, involving numerous iterations to realize
the envisioned product.
Careful planning, thorough selection of
components, down to the smallest details like
capacitors or adapters, without compromising
on quality, have resulted in a product that
stands at least 30% more cost-effective than
imported models. This, Mr Asfer asserts, is the
power of self-belief – the power of the right
individuals coming together to achieve what
may seem impossible.

20. Empowering Healthcare Transforma on
he next-generation medical technologies are
Tdesigned to improve diagnosis, treatment, and
patient monitoring, leading to better healthcare
outcomes. Advanced medical technologies often enable
minimally invasive procedures, reducing the need for
traditional surgeries. Combining world-class expertise with
digital technologies, MGM Healthcare works together to
ensure successful outcomes for kidney transplants. MGM
provides cutting-edge transplant procedures, which are
supported by a team of cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, and
critical care specialists, with end-stage heart and lung
disease.
Furthermore, MGM prioritizes key strategies that intend to
invest in advanced medical technology and infrastructure,
improving cutting-edge healthcare services. This makes
Insights Care India interview Mr. Harish Manian,
Group CEO, to know more about the modernized
diagnostic equipment and how it all began.
Below are the highlights of the interview:
Kindly tell us the source of inspiration. What led you to
venture into the transplant operations and industry?
Making a significant and positive difference in people's
lives serves as the main source of inspiration for MGM
Healthcare. We are convinced that medical advances have
the potential to transform healthcare and improve the well-
being of individuals and communities. Investing in organ
transplants fits in perfectly with this vision.
Several important factors prompted us to investigate and
invest in the transplant sector. We recognized the enormous
need for organ transplantation around the world, as well as
the life-changing potential it has for patients suffering from
end-stage organ failure. The scarcity of organ donors,
combined with growing waiting lists, prompted us to take
proactive steps to address this pressing healthcare issue.
Our commitment to making a positive impact, addressing
the growing need for organ transplantation, leveraging
advancements in medical science, and providing patient-
centric care, and the unwavering support of our exceptional
team inspired us to begin the organ transplant program at
MGM Healthcare.
Please brief us about the need for transplants in
healthcare. Why is it considered to be of importance
today?
Transplants play an important role in healthcare by
providing a new life to people with organ failure or severe
organ damage. When traditional medical interventions fail
to provide a viable solution, the need for transplants arises.
Organ transplants, such as heart, liver, kidney, and lung
transplants, are critical for patients suffering from end-stage
organ failure because they allow them to regain their health
and quality of life. These procedures have the potential to
significantly extend and improve the lives of patients who
would otherwise face a limited lifespan or rely on
ineffective medical devices or treatments.
Medical science and technology advancements have
increased the success rates of transplant procedures, making
them a viable option for more patients. This has resulted in
a greater understanding and acceptance of transplants as a
standard treatment option for organ failure. The rising
prevalence of chronic diseases such as diabetes,
cardiovascular disease, liver disease and kidney disease has
increased the demand for organ transplants. Organ
availability, whether from deceased donors or living donors,
has become critical in meeting this demand and saving
lives. Transplants have an impact on the entire healthcare
system, not just individual patients. Successful transplant
outcomes reduce the need for long-term, expensive
treatments while also improving overall healthcare
outcomes, making it an important treatment option.

electronic health records, telemedicine services, and remote
monitoring capabilities, allowing us to provide our patients
with personalized and accessible healthcare. These
technological advancements are critical for increasing
efficiency, reducing medical errors, and facilitating
seamless communication between healthcare providers and
patients.
We are concentrating our efforts on preventive healthcare
and wellness programs. Proactive measures, we believe, are
critical in promoting a healthier society and reducing the
burden on the healthcare system. To encourage early
detection and management of diseases, we have established
comprehensive health screening programs, health education
initiatives, and preventive care clinics. By emphasizing
preventive care, we hope to empower people to take charge
of their health and prevent illnesses from progressing,
resulting in better health outcomes and a higher quality of
life.
These initiatives are critical for MGM Healthcare because
they align with our vision of providing our patients with
exceptional healthcare services. We can improve the
efficiency and effectiveness of our care delivery by
embracing technology and innovation. Furthermore,
prioritizing preventive healthcare allows us to shift the
emphasis away from reactive treatments and toward
proactive health management, which has long-term benefits
for both individuals and society as a whole. We are
committed to driving positive change in the healthcare
landscape and fostering a 'Health-caring' movement that
prioritizes the well-being of our patients and the community
through these endeavors.
What are some of the challenges the center faces when
conducting operations and how do they turn them into
growth opportunities?
MGM Healthcare addresses challenges such as managing
rising demand and staying up-to-date on medical advances
by investing in infrastructure, recruiting skilled
professionals, forming partnerships, and embracing cutting-
edge technologies. This allows us to provide better
healthcare services, expand our patient base, and maintain
our position as a leading healthcare provider by
transforming these challenges into growth opportunities.
We recognize that running a hospital presents its own set of
challenges. One of the major challenges we face is meeting
the growing demand for healthcare services. As the
population grows and medical advances continue, so does
the demand for high-quality healthcare. We have
implemented strategies to expand our infrastructure and
increase our capacity in order to address this challenge and
turn it into a growth opportunity. We have invested in
cutting-edge medical equipment, upgraded our facilities,
and hired more skilled healthcare professionals. We not
only provide better access to healthcare for more patients
by effectively managing growing demand, but we also
position ourselves as a leading healthcare provider,
attracting more patients and contributing to our overall
growth.
What advice would you give budding enthusiasts who
want to venture into the sector?
We encourage aspiring healthcare professionals to pursue a
solid educational foundation. Obtaining relevant degrees
and certifications in fields such as medicine, nursing,
pharmacy, or public health is one example. Building a solid
knowledge base will not only provide individuals with a
deeper understanding of the industry, but will also equip
them with the necessary skills to contribute effectively.
How do you envision scaling the centre's services and
operations in 2024 and beyond?
MGM Healthcare will prioritize several key strategies. We
intend to invest in advanced medical technology and
infrastructure in order to improve our capabilities and
provide cutting-edge healthcare services. This includes
modernizing our diagnostic equipment, expanding our
surgical facilities, and implementing cutting-edge treatment
methods. We can attract more patients and provide cutting-
edge treatments if we remain at the forefront of medical
advancements.
We aim to expand our reach and accessibility by
establishing more units domestically allowing us to broaden
our service offerings and extend our geographical footprint.
Additionally, we will leverage telemedicine and digital
healthcare solutions to reach patients in remote areas and
provide virtual consultations and follow-ups.
Overall, our goal is to expand our reach and provide quality
healthcare to a larger group not only in our region but also
globally. By investing in technology, forging partnerships,
and embracing digital healthcare, we are confident in our
ability to scale our services and operations effectively,
providing high-quality and patient-centric care and beyond.

and innovation. The sector is now facing unprecedented
challenges, including a shortage of healthcare professionals, a
lack of infrastructure, and rising healthcare costs. However,
these challenges also present opportunities for the sector to

Challenges facing India’s Healthcare Sector
The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the challenges facing
India’s healthcare sector. The country has a shortage of
healthcare professionals. This shortage is particularly severe in
rural areas.
Infrastructure is another challenge facing the sector. This
shortage of infrastructure has been exacerbated by the pan-
demic, with hospitals in some cities reaching capacity.
Rising healthcare costs are also a challenge. According to a
report by the World Health Organization, out-of-pocket
expenditure on healthcare in India is as high as 62.4%, one of
the highest in the world. This high out-of-pocket expenditure
can push millions of people into poverty each year.

consult with doctors remotely. This is particularly important
in rural areas, where access to healthcare is limited.
Another innovative solution is the use of artificial
intelligence (AI) in healthcare. AI can be used for early
disease detection, diagnosis, and treatment. For example,
AI-powered tools can analyse medical images to detect
diseases such as cancer and diabetes. AI can also be used to
predict disease outbreaks, allowing healthcare providers to
prepare for pandemics.
The private sector is also playing a role in driving change in
the healthcare sector. Private hospitals and clinics are
investing in infrastructure and technology to improve
healthcare delivery. They are also partnering with the
government to provide healthcare services in rural areas.
Opportunities Ahead
The Indian healthcare sector is teeming with potential for
growth and investment, thanks to several factors high-
lighted in the provided sources. Here are the key opportuni-
ties:

pouring money into areas like diagnostics, hospital chains,
and health tech startups, thereby accelerating the healthcare
sector’s growth.
Rising Demand for Healthcare Services: A growing and
aging Indian population, coupled with a greater emphasis

healthcare services, paving the way for expansion.
Digital Health Technology: The integration of digital
health technology is transforming healthcare services,
making them more accessible, cost-effective, and efficient,
thereby contributing significantly to the sector’s growth.
Pharmaceutical Industry: India’s pharmaceutical industry,
the third largest globally by volume, is poised for continu-
ous growth due to increasing demand for generic drugs and
expanding exports, providing substantial expansion
opportunities.
Investment Opportunities: The Indian healthcare sector
presents a vast array of investment opportunities.
Demographic Trends: India’s demographic shifts, such as
rising life expectancy, an aging population, and a growing
middle-class segment, offer significant growth potential in
the healthcare sector.

sector, making it one of the most promising sectors in the
Indian economy.
Conclusion
India’s healthcare sector is facing significant challenges, but
it is also adapting to change. Telemedicine, AI, and private
sector investment are just some of the innovative solutions
being developed. The government is also playing a crucial
role in driving change, with a focus on primary healthcare
and digital innovation.
The COVID-19 pandemic has shown us that healthcare is
not just a sector, but a vital public service. The healthcare
sector must be strengthened to ensure that it is equipped to
handle future pandemics and provide quality healthcare to
all. The journey from crisis to opportunity in India’s
healthcare sector is a long one, but it is a journey that must
be taken.

31. Democratize Healthcare Across India
Redcliffe Labs has established a widespread presence
across India, spanning over 220 cities with 2000+ collection
centers and 80+ labs. The ambitious goal for 2030 is to
serve 500 million people nationwide. Notably, the company
prioritizes expansion in tier 2 and tier 3 cities, aiming to
bridge healthcare disparities. Even in regions with limited
digital engagement, Redcliffe Labs actively reaches out,
organizing over 1500 health camps weekly, catering to the
healthcare needs of over 2 lakh+ patients. This concerted
effort reflects the company's commitment to making
healthcare accessible to all, irrespective of geographical or
digital barriers.
Empowering Wellness
There is an urgent need to address the high risk of Non-
Communicable Diseases (NCDs) in India, with 1 in every 4
individuals succumbing to NCDs before the age of 70. To
improve India's healthcare scenario, Redcliffe Labs made a
strategic shift towards wellness-focused approaches rather
than solely addressing illness. It actively contributes to this
goal by promoting preventive healthcare checkups and
offering high-quality diagnostics at affordable rates.
A study presented in the UN General Assembly in
September 2023 underscores the economic impact of
Redcliffe Labs' diagnostics in India. The study indicates
that Redcliffe's tests deliver approximately $400 million in
economic savings by offering cost-effective solutions for
preventing cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Specifically,
Redcliffe's tests are found to be up to 8 times more cost-
effective than national treatment coverage for
cardiovascular disease and less than 2/3 the cost of
comparable screening and telemedicine interventions for
diabetes. This highlights the significant contribution of
Redcliffe Labs towards reducing the burden of NCDs and
promoting a healthier Bharat.
