12. the real enthusiasm and passion to pursue this profession
further came from the fact that healthcare workers are the
only source of hope when patients need it the most. There
was an adrenaline rush that happens when you see your
senior doctors doing anything to save a life and the
happiness, hope and optimism when they succeed in saving
lives. And when they were not able to do so, they would
take ownership of the situation and try even harder to find
out why they could not succeed and would read and
research more so that they did not lose a life. Her days in
medical school taught her the importance of life and
passion started to be the source of connection between life
and death. For her, nothing in life gives more happiness
than when a patient thanks you for whatever you have done
and that motivates her every day.
After venturing into the field, she realized the importance of
undergoing surgical procedures and interventions for
patients and their post-surgery recovery. This is a
challenging time for patients and their families as they go
through a lot of trauma. She highlights that almost 95 per
cent of the time, patients suffering from chronic pain do not
need surgery and can benefit from advanced non-surgical
techniques. This realization led her to focus on pain
management and regenerative therapy, which she believes
can revolutionize the world of chronic pain.
Vision behind Epione Center for Pain Relief
Driven by her passion for healing, Dr. Minal established
Epione Center for Pain Relief in 2018 along with Dr
Sudheer Dara, a pioneer in pain medicine. It is South India's
first multidisciplinary pain management center. The center
specializes in providing regenerative therapy and non-
surgical chronic pain management. Its expertise extends
beyond knee joint therapy to a wide range of pain
treatments, positioning it as a leader in the field. Dr. Minal
plays a pivotal role in this unique pain management center
in Hyderabad, known for its holistic and multi-modal
approach to treating various pain conditions.

medical breakthroughs and head effective strategies for
patient care all while being mothers, wives, and daughters.
These fascinating figures exemplify resilience, dedication,
and commitment to healthcare excellence, making them no
less than their male counterparts.
Synonymous with this spirit is Dr. Minal Chandra, an
eminent figure in the field of Pain Medicine with over a
decade of experience in the field. Her motivation to create a
pain-free society led her to pursue a career in pain
medicine, an unexplored medical branch in India. A pain
physician by profession she has well-updated knowledge of
the latest technologies and innovations in the field.
She is the Co-founder and Chief Consultant Pain

comprehensive care for pain management. The center is
known for providing advanced non-surgical pain treatment
services for various chronic pain conditions. It is dedicated
to revolutionizing the field of pain management with a team
of experienced specialists led by Dr. Minal.
With an exceptional ability to heal those in pain, her
dedication and commitment to work is commendable. But
her journey in healthcare is not just about treating pain but
also educating others about the need for effective pain
healthcare management.
Apart from her role as a pain physician, she is also an
Educator at Essential Pain Management which is a novel

of chronic pain. Her dedication and commitment towards

pain management. The center aims to harness deep insights
into patients suffering to create a pain-free society.
Epione is committed to delivering personalized care to help
improve its patients' quality of life. The center strives to
make an early and accurate diagnosis of acute and chronic
pain disorders to reduce the physical, financial, emotional,
and lifestyle costs of pain. Epione collaborates directly with
its patients to obtain the best possible response and help
them, along with their families, understand the cause of
their pain and learn ways to manage it effectively.
A Unique Pain Management Center
As the first Multidisciplinary Pain Management center in
South India, Epione introduces the concept of Regenerative
therapy for Musculoskeletal Pain in India. Despite its
popularity in western countries, this modality had not
gained recognition locally. Dr. Minal and her team
conducted extensive research over a decade to identify
barriers, refine protocols, and ensure maximum benefits for
Indian patients. Their approach focuses not only on treating
pain but also addressing its root cause, along with
understanding and managing associated social and
emotional factors.
Dr. Minal emphasizes not just motivating patients to
maintain a healthy lifestyle but also ensuring they do so
effectively. Epione's comprehensive approach to pain
management revolves around precise diagnosis,
personalized treatment plans, and comprehensive
rehabilitation. This strategy has earned trust and praise from
patients, positioning Epione as a leader in non-surgical
chronic pain management.
In addition to knee joint therapy, Epione's expertise extends
to addressing other chronic conditions like shoulder and hip
joint discomfort. Their utilization of Platelet-Rich Plasma
(PRP) therapy, a form of regenerative medicine, has
significantly improved the quality of life for many
individuals, empowering them to lead more fulfilling lives
free from incapacitating pain.
Leading with Motivation
With a strong background in medical education, Dr. Minal
Chandra effectively leads a skilled team at Epione, ensuring
consistent delivery of high-quality care to their patients.
She finds her greatest motivation in standing by her team
through both good and challenging times, recognizing that
supporting the team enhances their motivation to excel and
work in the best interest of the organization.
Dr. Minal does not perceive herself solely as a female
leader but rather as a leader facing challenges similar to her
male counterparts. She believes in her capabilities, stating,
"In my mind I just keep one thing that I am no less than any
leader irrespective of the gender." She stresses the
importance of changing one's mindset as a leader to
overcome challenges, advocating for a perspective that does
not differentiate challenges based on gender and encourages
refraining from comparing oneself to male counterparts.
Staying Updated
In the dynamic landscape of healthcare, staying current can
present challenges, yet Dr. Minal adeptly maintains her
knowledge up to date. She believes in the fact that science
brings innovation and so she keeps herself updated with the
recent developments and innovations and uses them for the
creating pain free society.
She remains connected to global advancements in
healthcare through medical literature, participation in panel
discussions, and advocates utilizing social media for staying
informed. To uphold Epione's position at the forefront of
excellence, Dr. Minal prioritizes ensuring her team remains
well-versed in the latest technologies and developments in
the field.
Overcoming Challenges through Self-improvement
With a decade of experience in the healthcare field, Dr.
Minal has gained significant exposure, accompanied by
numerous challenges. While talking about the most
significant challenges that women face today, she expresses,
"First and the most difficult challenge is managing work-
life balance and to be honest it doesn't exist." A second
most common challenge is dealing with people in everyday
life who comment and give unnecessary lessons about
motherhood. Additional hurdles include struggles with
financial independence, seeking validation for decisions,
low self-esteem, and the burden of societal expectations.
Epione is commi ed
to delivering personalized care
to help improve its pa ents'
quality of life.
16. Overcoming these is not as difficult now as it was
previously. Dr. Minal chooses to put a deaf ear to things
that bring a negative vibe and concentrates more on
enriching her knowledge and skills and investing her time
and money in herself to make me a better version of myself.
She advocates overcoming these obstacles through self-
empowerment. Encouraging individuals to believe in
themselves and confront their insecurities is key, to
promoting self-confidence in those lacking it and providing
motivation for those in need. Offering platforms for
individuals to voice their aspirations, validating their
desires, raising awareness about legal rights and
responsibilities, and expanding educational opportunities
are essential steps towards empowering women leaders to
overcome these challenges effectively.
Managing Multiple Roles
In addition to her role as a leading figure at her center, Dr.
Minal serves as a Visiting Consultant at Dhaka Pain
Management Centre in Bangladesh. She also holds the
position of General Council Member at ISSP Telangana
Chapter, actively contributing to the field of pain
management. Engaging with multiple international groups,
she serves as a Pain Physician, trainer, and educator at
Essential Pain Management, an initiative supported by the
New Zealand and Australian Anaesthesia Societies. Dr.
Minal is a Visiting faculty member at the South Asian
Society for Pain Medicine and BSSP-Anaesthesiology at
the University of Minnesota, USA. She has organized Eight
Hands-on Cadaveric International Workshops in Hyderabad
and authored a book on Interventional Pain Management.
Her numerous publications in international and national
journals reflect her dedication to advancing knowledge in
the field. Furthermore, Dr. Minal's role as a faculty member
at national and international conferences highlights her
commitment to sharing expertise and contributing to the
broader healthcare community.
A Global Vision
Dr. Minal Chandra perceives the journey of her center from
its inception to its current status as a leading center in the
city as a notable success story. The protocols developed by
the center have garnered widespread acclaim, with various
specialties adopting them, marking a significant
achievement. The center has been acknowledged by the
India Book of Records for its exceptional performance in
administering the highest number of Platelet-Rich Plasma
(PRP) treatments for knee joint pain.
Looking ahead, Dr. Minal envisions establishing multiple
pain management centers across India and globally. Her
goal is to lead transformative change in the healthcare
sector by introducing innovative techniques to serve
individuals from diverse socio-economic backgrounds in a
cost-effective manner.
Dr. Minal's vision for Epione involves providing
multidisciplinary pain management services throughout
India, with a focus on alleviating pain nationwide. Her
ultimate objective is to revolutionize Regenerative therapy
in the Indian context, making it accessible to a broader
population at an affordable cost. Additionally, she aims to
promote medical tourism as part of her strategic roadmap
for the future.
Embracing Individuality
Dr. Minal has a realistic understanding of her strengths and
weaknesses and possesses the courage to overcome them by
combating negative thoughts. She emphasizes the power of
embracing yourself and accepting your body shape, size,
and colour to create a positive aura. This has helped her a
lot over the years. However, it used to bother her a lot when
the colour of her skin was kept above the degrees she had.
This automatically took a U-Turn when she kept on
enhancing her skills. She realized that it is not the body
size, shape, or colour that fetches achievements, but it is the
skills that one develops over time.
She also notes that when life gets hectic it can be easy to
forget about taking care of yourself. But self-care is an
important part of one's physical and mental well-being.
Shaping Future Leaders
In offering guidance to aspiring women leaders, Dr. Minal
imparts valuable advice. She encourages them to cultivate
self-empowerment and independence, emphasizing that
personal empowerment is key to achieving success. She
believes that success knows no gender boundaries and is
attainable by anyone who diligently pursues it.
In conclusion, she conveys a powerful message, "Always be
open to opportunities and don't let them go, however small
they may be because these small opportunities will lead to
big ones."

Empowering Change
March 2024 17
In recent years, India's healthcare sector has witnessed a
remarkable transformation with the emergence of female
leaders at the forefront. This shift marks a significant
departure from traditional gender norms, highlighting the
increasing empowerment and representation of women in key
positions within the industry.
Let's delve into the diverse roles and impactful contributions
of these female leaders shaping the future of healthcare in
India!
Shifting Dynamics of Leadership
Historically, the Indian healthcare landscape has been
predominantly male-dominated, reflecting broader societal
structures and cultural norms. However, with changing
attitudes towards gender equality and the recognition of
women's capabilities, there has been a notable shift in the
dynamics of leadership within the sector. Today, women are
assuming leadership roles across various domains, including
healthcare administration, clinical practice, research, and
public health advocacy.
Empowering Change in Healthcare Administration
One notable area where female leaders are making significant
strides is in healthcare administration. Traditionally perceived
as a male-dominated field, healthcare administration in India is
witnessing a growing number of women assuming top
positions in hospitals, clinics, and healthcare organizations.
These women bring with them a diverse set of skills, including
strategic planning, financial management, and organizational
leadership, which are instrumental in driving operational
efficiency and improving healthcare delivery.

Breaking Barriers in Leadership Roles
Moreover, female leaders in healthcare administration often
bring a unique perspective to decision-making processes,
incorporating insights related to women's health issues,
patient-centered care, and inclusive policies. This holistic
approach not only fosters greater empathy and compassion
within healthcare institutions but also ensures that the
diverse needs of patients are adequately addressed.
Advancements in Clinical Practice and Medical
Research
In addition to healthcare administration, female leaders are
also making significant contributions to clinical practice
and medical research. Women physicians and researchers
are actively involved in groundbreaking research initiatives,
contributing to advancements in areas such as reproductive
health, maternal-child care, infectious diseases, and non-
communicable diseases.
Contributions to Groundbreaking Research Initiatives
Their expertise and dedication are instrumental in
addressing some of the most pressing healthcare challenges
facing the country, including the high maternal and infant
mortality rates, the burden of communicable diseases, and
the rising prevalence of lifestyle-related illnesses such as
diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.
Bridging Gaps in Access to Healthcare Services
Furthermore, female leaders in clinical practice are playing
a pivotal role in bridging the gap in access to healthcare
services, particularly in rural and underserved communities.
Through their commitment to community engagement and
outreach programs, these women are bringing essential
healthcare services closer to those in need, thereby
improving health outcomes and promoting overall well-
being.
Harnessing Technology and Innovation
Moreover, female leaders are leveraging technology and
innovation to revolutionize healthcare delivery and improve
health outcomes. From telemedicine platforms to mobile
health applications, women entrepreneurs and innovators
are harnessing the power of technology to overcome
barriers to healthcare access, particularly in remote and
rural areas.
Challenges and Barriers Faced by Female Leaders
However, despite the progress made, female leaders in
India's healthcare sector continue to face various challenges
and barriers to their full participation and advancement.
Gender stereotypes, cultural biases, work-life balance
issues, and limited access to resources and opportunities
remain significant obstacles that need to be addressed
systematically.
Gender Stereotypes and Cultural Biases
To overcome these challenges and ensure the continued
empowerment of women in healthcare leadership roles,
concerted efforts are required at multiple levels. This
includes fostering a supportive and inclusive work
environment, providing mentorship and leadership
development programs, promoting gender-sensitive policies
and practices, and encouraging greater representation of
women in decision-making bodies and leadership positions.
Strategies for Empowerment and Inclusion
Moreover, there is a need for targeted interventions to
address the unique needs and challenges faced by women in
healthcare, including access to affordable childcare, flexible
work arrangements, career advancement opportunities, and
equal pay for equal work. By addressing these systemic
barriers and promoting gender equity in healthcare
leadership, India can unlock the full potential of its female
workforce and drive greater innovation, efficiency, and
inclusivity within the healthcare sector.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the rise of female leaders in India's
healthcare sector represents a significant step towards
greater gender equality and empowerment. These women
are not only breaking barriers and challenging stereotypes
but also driving meaningful change that benefits society as
a whole. By harnessing their diverse talents, expertise, and
leadership skills, India can build a more inclusive and
equitable healthcare system that meets the needs of all its
citizens, regardless of gender, ethnicity, or socioeconomic
status. Empowering women in healthcare leadership is not
just a matter of fairness; it is essential for achieving
sustainable development and ensuring the health and well-
being of future generations.

22. Aluminary in the field of psychotherapy and holistic
healing, Dr. Greeshma Nataraj embodies a
diverse skill set that includes counselling
psychology, hypnotherapy, neuro-linguistic programming
(NLP), cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), inner child
healing, past life regression (PLR), naturopathy, shadow
work, Reiki, Grand Master Lama Fera healing, and tarot
card expertise.
Her holistic approach to healing and personal growth sets
her apart in the industry. With a substantial online presence,
Dr. Greeshma shares her insights and wisdom through
engaging YouTube videos, reaching and impacting
thousands across society. Through her organisation,
Greeshma Nataraj Counselling Café (GNCC), she has
touched the lives of many individuals, particularly
garnering acclaim in Kerala, Kochi, for her client-centric
approach and ability to facilitate profound breakthroughs.
Clients flock to Dr. Greeshma for her proven self-
development curriculum and result-oriented techniques,
which guarantee tangible improvements in all facets of life.
Her innovative strategies generate lasting transformations,
offering clients permanent solutions to their challenges.
Central to Dr. Greeshma's philosophy is the belief that "Our
thoughts and emotions shape our reality, and by cultivating
emotional balance, we unlock solutions to even the most
daunting problems." She empowers individuals to discover
their inherent purpose and guides them on the path to
fulfilment and success.
Catalyst for Change
Dr. Greeshma embarked on her journey in psychotherapy
and counselling with a blend of academic pursuits and
personal experiences. Armed with a Master's in Integrative
Counselling and Psychotherapy, she supplemented her
knowledge with short courses in child development and
other related fields, eventually earning a diploma.
Dr. Greeshma's journey into this profession was ignited by a
series of life's trials and tribulations. In 2000, during the
Y2K era, she confronted the devastating loss of her first
child in an accident shortly after her marriage. Amidst the
grief, she found herself unfairly blamed for prioritising her
career over family, save for the steady support of her
husband.
During two years of bedridden recovery, she observed
society's failure to comprehend the essence of personal
freedom and independence beyond career pursuits. Then,
she resolved to create a haven where individuals could
untangle their innermost thoughts and emotions without
fear of judgment.
Driven by empathy and a desire for societal change, Dr.
Greeshma committed herself to help others navigate life's
complexities.
Overcoming Setbacks
Dr. Greeshma candidly reflects on her journey,
acknowledging the stigma that once shrouded mental health
in her life. Her family's firm support and belief in her
transformative potential propelled her towards the study of
psychology, a decision she holds dear.
Growing up in India, where cultural norms heavily
influenced perceptions of mental well-being, Dr. Greeshma
felt a profound calling to address the prevalent challenges
her friends and neighbours face. Motivated by a desire to

establishing a counselling cafe, drawing from her struggles
and experiences.
Despite enduring personal setbacks and health issues, Dr.
Greeshma found solace in the dedicated support of her
loved ones. Through her journey of self-discovery and
recovery, she gained a deep understanding of human
suffering and resilience, enabling her to empathise with
those who sought her guidance.
Travelling across India exposed Dr. Greeshma to a myriad
of perspectives and personas, enriching her understanding
of human nature and fortifying her resolve to serve others.
A Multidimensional Method
Dr. Greeshma explains her multidimensional approach to
therapy, which she tailors to an individual's unique needs
and goals. She views counselling as a collaborative process,
where she works closely with clients to understand their
challenges and emotions.
Drawing from evidence-based therapeutic modalities, Dr.
Greeshma crafts personalized solutions for her clients,
considering their personalities and desires for improvement.
Some seek guidance, while others are eager to dive into
personal and professional growth.
Incorporating elements of life coaching, Dr. Greeshma
helps clients navigate their current challenges while
envisioning a fulfilling future. She also utilises
hypnotherapy to address subconscious beliefs and stress
management, recognising that many issues stem from early
experiences and ingrained patterns.
Breaking Stigma
Dr. Greeshma recognises that despite living in what some
call the Zen generation of 2024, societal taboos still
surround discussions about psychology and counselling.
There's a lingering stigma, with some perceiving seeking
help as a sign of mental instability or weakness. This
mindset often discourages individuals from seeking the
support they need.
Even in today's educated society, the fear of being labelled
as "mad" or "mentally unstable" persists, perpetuating the
reluctance to seek professional assistance. Dr. Greeshma
understands the negative connotations attached to the term
"mental health services" and deliberately avoids it in her
practice.
Instead, she has created a warm and inviting atmosphere in
her cafe-like space, designed to ease apprehensions and
promote open dialogue. By offering coffee, healthy snacks,
and detoxification drinks, Dr. Greeshma aims to cultivate an
environment where clients feel comfortable discussing their
concerns, much like meeting a friend for coffee.
Addressing Anxiety and Nurturing Relationships
Dr. Greeshma finds her calling in addressing the intricate
dynamics of anxiety and relationships, areas she has
intimately experienced and grown through in her own life.
Recognising today's fast-paced, instant gratification culture,
she believes that nurturing healthy relationships is vital for
individual well-being.
Drawing from her journey and understanding, Dr.
Greeshma emphasises the significance of relationships as
the cornerstone of human existence. She views them as the
vessel that navigates life's challenges, offering stability and
connection in an ever-changing world.
Through her practice, Dr. Greeshma aims to provide
individuals with the tools and insights needed to navigate

understands the nuances of give-and-take, the importance of
communication, and the dynamics of compromise within
relationships. Her passion for relationship counselling
stems from her transformational journey, where she once
held reservations about marriage only to gain profound
insights upon entering one. Dr. Greeshma believes that
addressing anxiety and anger within relationships is vital, as
they often intertwine and affect various aspects of human
connection.
Dr. Greeshma seeks to empower individuals to discover
themselves and evolve within their relationships in her
work. She finds fulfilment in guiding others toward
healthier, more fulfilling connections, knowing that the
impact extends far beyond the individual to enrich the
fabric of society itself.
A Journey of Resilience and Compassion
Dr. Greeshma reflects on her journey with a sense of
gratitude and resilience, acknowledging the support of her
family and her innate ability to connect with people
regardless of gender or background. While she hasn't faced
significant gender-related challenges in her career, she
acknowledges that some individuals may feel
uncomfortable discussing certain issues with a female
psychologist, requiring her to demonstrate competence and
understanding.
Her family has been a constant source of support, creating
an environment of harmony, balance, and understanding.
Even her 14-year-old child has shown support and
understanding for her work. While language barriers and
societal stigmas have presented occasional obstacles, Dr.
Greeshma remains committed to breaking through these
ceilings and ensuring fair decision-making processes.
Despite facing personal challenges, such as the loss of her
child and subsequent health struggles, Dr. Greeshma finds
strength in her family's guidance and support. Her passion
for her work is evident, as she emphasises her desire to
guide and support others through their struggles, even if it
means encouraging them to make difficult decisions or find
independence.
Prioritising Purpose
Dr. Greeshma believes that in healthcare, being genuinely
supportive and caring should be the primary focus, with
monetary rewards naturally following. She reflects on the
shift in perceptions towards careers in psychology, noting
that while COVID-19 has brought attention to the field and
attracted individuals seeking glamour and financial gain,
her motivation has always been rooted in a sincere desire to
understand and reduce mental health struggles.
For Dr. Greeshma, the driving force behind her career is the
desire to bring happiness and relief to individuals
experiencing mental health challenges, regardless of
financial considerations. While she acknowledges that
money is a consequential aspect, she emphasises that it
should not overshadow the core mission of providing
compassionate care and promoting well-being.
Breaking Barriers
Dr. Greeshma earnestly addresses the need to challenge
societal stereotypes and gender disparities that persist in the
Z generation. She emphasises women's inherent strength
and capabilities, advocating for equal opportunities and
recognising their leadership potential.
In her view, the key to empowering women leaders is
prioritising work-life balance, offering flexible working
hours, and acknowledging diverse cultural values. Dr.
Greeshma believes mentorship programs, diversity training,
and inclusive environments are essential for nurturing
female leadership. She highlights the importance of
recognising women's unique strengths and contributions,
citing examples like Indra Nooyi, who balances
professional success with familial responsibilities. Dr.
Greeshma underscores the resilience and dedication of
women who navigate challenges in various fields, from
healthcare to aviation. However, she acknowledges that

perpetuate stereotypes and barriers to
their own empowerment. Dr. Greeshma
stresses the need for a positive mindset
shift and cultural transformation to
overcome such challenges.
Dr. Greeshma also addresses cultural
differences, emphasising the
importance of respecting diverse
perspectives and traditions. Dr.
Greeshma cautions against
unquestioningly adopting Western
ideals and urges recognition of
women's emotions and individuality
beyond superficial appearances.
Supporting Women Leaders in
Healthcare
Dr. Greeshma offers valuable advice to
aspiring women leaders looking to
establish themselves in the healthcare
industry. She emphasises the
importance of believing in oneself and
recognising that while theoretical
knowledge is crucial, practical
implementation requires understanding
the unique individuality of each
person. She discourages entering the
field for glamour or monetary gain,
instead urging women to pursue
healthcare with a genuine desire to
contribute to societal well-being.
Dr. Greeshma advocates for creating an
environment that supports women in
healthcare, including flexible working
hours and adequate parental leave
policies. She underscores the
significance of cultural competence
training and celebrating diverse
perspectives to ensure inclusive
healthcare practices. Moreover, she
suggests prioritising research
initiatives focused on women's health
and addressing societal crises.
Dr. Greeshma expresses her professional goal of establishing her
Counselling Cafe as a sustainable resource for those unable to
afford mental health services. Her vision is to create a space
where individuals who can afford it pay for the services, thus
enabling her to extend support to those who cannot. She aims to
educate and empower individuals like herself, who possess
emotional depth and a desire to contribute to society.
In addition to providing counselling services, Dr. Greeshma is focused
on introducing various therapeutic modalities, including Reiki, pranic
healing, and Lama Fera, to reduce dependency on medication for
mental health issues. She emphasises the importance of empathy
and listening in therapy, recognising that suppressed emotions
often manifest as reactions without proper support.
Dr. Greeshma aims to raise awareness about mental health on a
broader scale in India, where it is much needed. She envisions
collaborating with insurance companies to make mental health
services accessible to all, regardless of financial status. She seeks
partnerships with hospitals and individuals who prioritise patient
well-being over financial gain.
Driven by her commitment to supporting others and her
innovative approach to therapy, Dr. Greeshma feels she has
achieved personal and professional growth through her
counselling cafe. Her ultimate goal now is to sustain this
endeavour for the betterment of society, reaching out to as many
people as possible and continually exploring new therapeutic
approaches.
A Journey of Self-Discovery
Dr. Greeshma's recently published book, 'I THOUGHT I DID,'
offers insights into psychology, psychotherapy, and counselling,
focusing on self-discovery within relationships.
The book discusses how psychotherapy sessions can assist
individuals in understanding themselves and their connections
with their life partners.

31. Women at the Lead
Transformation
India's Healthcare
in
Indury
n recent years, the healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors in
IIndia have witnessed a notable shift with an increasing
number of women taking up leadership positions. This shift
marks a significant departure from the traditional landscape where
men predominantly held the reins. However, despite the rising
number of women in the healthcare workforce, there remains a
conspicuous absence of female leaders, particularly at the
executive and board levels.
Let's explore women's leadership in India's healthcare:
challenges, opportunities, initiatives, and strategies driving
transformation towards gender equity and inclusivity!
Challenges and Gender Imbalance
Reports and studies have consistently highlighted the gender
imbalance prevalent in healthcare leadership positions.
Shockingly, women occupy only 18% of such roles, indicating a
stark underrepresentation. Furthermore, even when women do
break through the glass ceiling, they often find themselves facing
disparities in compensation compared to their male counterparts.
This disparity not only undermines gender equality but also
perpetuates systemic biases within the industry.
Stereotypes, social norms, and misconceptions about women's
commitment and competence further compound the challenges
faced by aspiring female leaders in healthcare. These deep-rooted
biases create barriers to career advancement, limiting
opportunities for women to reach the upper echelons of
leadership.
Opportunities and Progress
Despite the challenges, the healthcare sector in India presents a
plethora of opportunities for women aiming to ascend to

32. leadership roles. Projections suggest that by 2030, the
industry will add 8 million jobs, including 40,000 new
leadership positions. This growth trajectory offers a
promising avenue for increasing female representation in
leadership roles within the healthcare sector.
Organizations across the country are beginning to recognize
the importance of championing gender equity and
inclusivity within their workforces. By fostering inclusive
environments and implementing policies that promote
diversity, these organizations are taking proactive steps to
address the gender gap in healthcare leadership.
Initiatives and Studies
Several initiatives and studies are underway to understand
and address the factors contributing to the
underrepresentation of women in healthcare leadership.
Organizations like the International Center for Research on
Women (ICRW) are conducting comprehensive studies
aimed at identifying barriers to women's career
advancement in the health sector. These studies analyze
existing laws and policies, organizational structures, and
cultural norms to identify opportunities for promoting
women's leadership in healthcare.
Through these initiatives, stakeholders aim to create an
evidence-based approach to fostering women's leadership in
the healthcare industry. By understanding the enablers and
barriers to women's career progression, organizations can
implement targeted interventions to create pathways for
women to ascend to leadership positions.
Driving Transformation
The underrepresentation of women in leadership roles
within India's healthcare industry not only perpetuates
gender inequality but also hinders the industry's ability to
innovate and adapt to changing needs. Research has
consistently shown that diverse leadership teams are more
adept at problem-solving, driving innovation, and
delivering sustainable results.
By promoting gender equity and inclusivity in leadership
positions, organizations can harness the full potential of
their workforce. Women bring unique perspectives,
experiences, and skills to the table, enriching decision-
making processes and driving transformative change within
the industry.
The Role of Mentorship and Sponsorship
Mentorship and sponsorship programs play a crucial role in
supporting women's career development in healthcare
leadership. By pairing aspiring female leaders with
experienced mentors and sponsors, organizations can
provide valuable guidance, support, and advocacy. These
programs help women navigate the complexities of the
healthcare industry, build networks, and access
opportunities for career advancement.
Investing in Leadership Development
Investing in leadership development programs tailored to
the needs of women can significantly impact their career
trajectories. By providing training, skill-building
workshops, and leadership development opportunities,
organizations can equip women with the tools and
confidence needed to thrive in leadership roles. These
programs not only empower individual women but also
contribute to building a robust pipeline of female leaders
within the healthcare industry.
Promoting Work-Life Balance
Creating a supportive work environment that promotes
work-life balance is essential for attracting and retaining
women in leadership positions. Flexible work
arrangements, parental leave policies, and childcare support
enable women to balance their professional and personal
responsibilities effectively. By prioritizing work-life
balance, organizations can create inclusive cultures that
empower women to excel in their careers while maintaining
a healthy work-life integration.
Conclusion
As India's healthcare sector continues to evolve and expand,
it is imperative to address the gender imbalance prevalent in
leadership positions. By championing gender equity,
fostering inclusive workplaces, and implementing policies
that promote diversity, organizations can unlock the full
potential of their workforce and drive transformation within
the industry. Through concerted efforts and collaborative
initiatives, we can create a future where women play a
leading role in shaping the healthcare landscape, driving
innovation, and delivering equitable and accessible
healthcare for all.

Mission to Educate and Serve India's Underserved
Communities
Akshar Pulmo Care specializes in treating respiratory
diseases and pulmonary medicine patients, including
conditions like TB, asthma, COPD, allergies, and sleep
disorders. Their mission is to provide compassionate care to
improve patients' respiratory health and overall well-being.
Dr. Puja's vision extends beyond clinical care; she aims to
reach every corner of India, even the most underserved
villages, to educate people about respiratory diseases. Her
goal is to dispel myths surrounding inhalers and TB, and to
empower individuals with knowledge to take control of
their respiratory health.
Through education and awareness initiatives, Dr. Puja
strives to strengthen the lung health of the nation and
contribute to reducing the burden of respiratory diseases in
India. She welcomes support and collaboration from any
source that can help advance her vision for a healthier
India.
Recognition of Innate Skills and Business Success
Dr. Puja believes that women in India, even in the smallest
households and villages, possess exceptional managerial
skills. They effectively run their households, acting as their
own finance ministers, managing finances and resources
adeptly. Additionally, they serve as caregivers, often having
their own small dispensary at home for treating sick
children and utilizing kitchen remedies. They also manage
public relations, organize neighborhood gatherings, and
manage human resources by maintaining relationships with
neighbors and community members.
Dr. Puja emphasizes that women are naturally adept at
multitasking and decision-making, with an innate ability to
manage various aspects of life simultaneously. While
women may possess these innate skills, she acknowledges
that her training in administration has further refined her
decision-making abilities. Initially, she struggled with
emotional decision-making but has since learned to make
informed decisions without biases, a crucial aspect in
business. She proudly states that Akshar Pulmo Care has
been profitable since its inception and is experiencing
continuous growth. Looking ahead, she envisions expansion
in the coming year, underscoring the company's success
both economically and in fulfilling its mission of providing
compassionate care to improve respiratory health.
Bridging Gaps in Rural Respiratory Health
Dr. Puja has taken proactive steps to reach out to rural
communities by collaborating with local primary health
centers and government agencies. While she encounters
varying levels of support, she remains determined to
educate communities about respiratory health through
camps, seminars, and street plays. These initiatives aim to
raise awareness about the dangers of smoking and tobacco
use and emphasize the importance of timely inhaler usage
to prevent lung diseases.
In addition to education and awareness programs, Dr. Puja
seeks support from agencies to provide inhalers at reduced
costs, either through her clinic or in partnership with these
agencies. She emphasizes that while her clinic is willing to
provide services for free, collaboration and assistance from
government and other organizations are essential to ensure
widespread access to affordable healthcare.
In due course, Dr. Puja's goal is to make a meaningful
impact on respiratory health in rural areas, and she urges the
government and other stakeholders to join hands in this
noble endeavor.

operating procedures (SOPs) at Akshar Pulmo Care to
ensure efficient and standardized processes. From
appointment booking to patient care, every activity is
governed by specific SOPs to maintain consistency and
quality of service. Patients receive confirmation of their
appointments promptly, and upon arrival, they are greeted
warmly, provided with hand sanitizer, and their medical
history is documented digitally.
In addition to traditional in-person consultations, Akshar
Pulmo Care offers teleconsultations worldwide, allowing
patients to receive expert medical advice from anywhere.
Through digitalization, the clinic has streamlined its
operations, offered paperless prescriptions, and maintained
digital records for easy access and efficient communication
with patients.
Dr. Puja's commitment to leveraging technology and
implementing SOPs ensures that Akshar Pulmo Care
provides patients with convenient, high-quality healthcare
services, whether they are local or accessing care remotely
from around the world.
Vision for Respiratory Rehabilitation Centers
Dr. Puja's passion for rehabilitating patients with respiratory
diseases is evident in her commitment to improving their
quality of life. She believes that mere survival is not
enough; rather, enabling patients to regain their ability to
participate in normal activities is crucial. Dr. Puja is
dedicated to enhancing the overall well-being and
functionality of individuals affected by respiratory
conditions.
Driven by her passion, Dr. Puja aspires to establish
respiratory rehabilitation centers. These centers would
provide specialized care and support tailored to the unique
needs of patients recovering from respiratory illnesses. By
focusing on rehabilitation, Dr. Puja aims to empower
patients to lead fulfilling lives and achieve a higher level of
independence despite their respiratory challenges.
Pursuing Dreams for Personal and Societal Growth
Dr. Puja believes that true leadership goes beyond merely
guiding others; it involves creating an environment where
subordinates can flourish and grow. Leaders should
empower their team members by granting them autonomy
and providing opportunities for personal and professional
development. Additionally, Dr. Puja emphasizes the
importance of pursuing one's passions and dreams,
especially if they have the potential to benefit society. She
encourages individuals to have faith in themselves, work
diligently, and uphold high values such as authenticity and
honesty. With these qualities and a steadfast commitment to
their dreams, Dr. Puja believes that individuals can soar to
great heights and overcome any obstacles they may
