3. History of IMF
1. When first ascent of Mount Everest was done by Sir Edmund Hillary and
Tenzing Norgay in year 1953, it generated interest in Mountaineering in India,
which lead to establishment of IMF.
2. IMF was formed in year 1957 by the name of”Sponsoring Committee of the
Cho-OYU-expedition”.
3. This expedition was a huge hit.

1. In 1959, it changed its name to the “Sponsoring Committee of Everest
Expedition”.
2. In the following year again name was changed and it was called ”Sponsoring
Committee for mountaineering expeditions”.
3. Finally on January 15th, 1961 a permanent organization was setup.

1. On November 3rd, 1961 it was registered as IMF which has a role as the national
body.
2. IMF headquarters is situated in New Delhi.
3. Its building was inaugurated by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1980.

6. Role of IMF
1. Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF) is an apex national body.
2. IMF organize, support and provide a base for expeditions for mountaineering,
skiing, rock climbing, trekking at higher altitudes.
3. IMF promote, encourage and execute schemes for adventure activities.
4. IMF is also actively involved in environmental protection work in the
Himalayas.
5. IMF co-ordinates climbing in Indian Himalayas
(including MT. Everest).

1. IMF organizes national and international conferences, environment cleaning camps and
climbing competitions.
2. IMF is closely associated with the Ministries of sports, Home, Defence, Tourism and
Environment of the Government of India.
3. Foreigners can climb mountain peaks in India after obtaining the required clearances.
4. IMF is affiliated to the UIAA (International Mountaineering and Climbing Federation).
5. IMF is also the regulatory body for the competitive Olympic sport of Sport Climbing and
affiliated to IFSC (International Federation of Sport Climbing).

1. BMC – Basic Mountaineering Course, offers basic orientation and skills in rock craft, ice craft, rope work,
mountaineering awareness, expedition planning, outdoor survival, camp craft, wilderness, navigation, exposure to
glaciers and high Himalayan Ranges and a real climb to a high point or a peak. Emergency procedures are an
essential part of BMC. The first few days are spent in theoretical classes after which the trainees are taken to
glacier for the rest of the course. The course is physically and mentally challenging and requires a basic level of
fitness. The age limit is from 18 – 35 though the age relaxation may be given for special cases.
2. AMC – Advanced Mountaineering Courses offers more practical oriented and imparts advanced techniques of
climbing with greater emphasis on expedition planning and execution, emergencies, peak climbing, team building,
leadership qualities to help students acquire the skills and confidence to organize and undertake challenging
expeditions. The age limit is 18-40 years.

1. SAR – for those of you who are more serious about mountaineering and hope to lead major
expeditions. SAR is invaluable as it teaches you all the emergencies and rescue procedures,
evacuation systems, saving lives in extreme situations. SAR is mostly about being self – reliant
and developing your confidence to undertake rescue operations.
2. MOI – teaches more you about how to impart training to others and is important for those of
you who wish to become climbing or outdoor instructiors eithr in schools and adventure
industry
