4. The creative communities
“In New Delhi's old and famous Connaught Circle, during the early summer of 1990,
a small group of designers, artists and friends
managed – with the help of a few fortunate coincidences – to set up a
studio-shop which was remarkably free from the impositions and demands
of (heartless) markets and (artless) clients.
The ideas and experimentations that followed were the seed that grew to become
all of us at People Tree take pride in our
the 'People Tree'. Today,
reputation as a small independent business which combines a
sense of social purpose and ecological
responsibility with the spirit of collective
creativity. This has been the vision which has guided our work as a design,
production and retail centre.”
6. Under Construction
Under Construction is conceived as anon-broadcast, non-
commercial distribution initiative for educational
films. Under Construction aims to bridge the gap between educational audio
visuals and audiences to facilitate a culture of vibrant discourse as well as the
ease of access to an eclectic collection from a single source.
The Under Construction journey had begun during mid-2005 with a
desire
to disseminate independent films that would
provide civil society with a range of voices and
discourses and enable a re-look at the terrain of knowledge and culture
both as a site and practice. We have carefully curated a truly eclectic range of
films that demonstrate diverse issues and form. This work of curation is an
integral part of the distribution activity and is critical for presenting a collective
but plural picture in terms of politics, form and craft. Moreover, it
is this
body of work that creates a mechanism and tool
for us to work with the politics of visibility.
