Editor's Notes
We want students, parents, and counselors to consider ALL options for education, and to seek out the colleges that fit them the best. College is a major investment, make sure that the college learning environment will give them the greatest success. We will be hearing from colleagues from the CTC, 4 year publics. All are great choices for the right student. Consider the best program for each student. Variety of schools, locations, missions and students.
Independent Colleges have 4 core commitments to our students and community: Diversity Quality Graduating successful students prepared for a global and knowledge based economy Affordability through student aid
Who is an independent college student? There is not a single characteristic to define them, except the desire to learn and success. Enroll about 40k most from Washington, and from all Socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds
With minority distributions similar to State institutions. White Asian Hispanic Black Native American ICW 76% 9% 6% 3% 2% Pub Bacc: 71% 13% 6% 3% 2% CTC: 75% 7% 8% 5% 2%
Represent about 15% of students enrolled in 4 year schools in Washington, but graduate almost 25%. And of those that graduate, almost 80% graduate in 4 years or less. Faster graduation = less time in school and less money spent for tuition, room and board.
Our colleges are committed to making college affordable through grants, scholarships, and loans. A vast majority receive financial aid, and schools are working hard to keep tuition rates from rising â a 4% increase over last year in tuition, but a 9% increase in financial aid. There are some merit and academic scholarships, but most is need based.
College is expensive, but Tuition alone does not tell the entire story. Financial aid helps bridge the gap, especially institutional aid. The average debt upon graduation is less than one year of tuition at an independent school, but more than three times the amount of one year of tuition at a public school. You canât just look at tuition alone. Apply to your best fit schools, then compare the costs after financial aid comes in. Average Financial Aid Package (for those receiving aid) in 2007-2008 Tuition and fees $26,136 Room and board $7369 Total $33,505 Financial Aid Federal grants $4,568 State grants $4,822 Institutional grants $11,987 Student loans $5,715 State/Federal Work Study Total $2,061 $29,153 Net Tuition $4,352
