Hosted by Transcat and presented by Fluke, this webinar shows how to increase your maintenance teams productivity to lower down time. Presented on March 20, 2013.
2. Conventional troubleshooting
and testing today
• Typically one meter, one reading at a time.
– Hard to see multiple events, multiple phase measurements
• Separation issues between measurement points and/or controls will
require at least two people and maybe more equipment
– Ladders, tight spaces, separated controls
• Safety, generally requires PPE be used multiple times for
some testing.
– May be complicated to accomplish in
hazardous areas, like rotating machinery
– Arc Flash hazards always a concern

3. Troubleshooting methodology
pre wireless
One meter, one reading
– Only spot measurements possible
– Cause and effect hard to see
– No 3 phase capability
– May not be possible due to a hazardous
environment
– May not see intermittent occurrences
– Cant see changes over time without
specialized expensive tools
Fluke wireless tools 3
4. Troubleshooting methodology
pre wireless
Separation between measurement and control or two
measurement points requires two people, more equipment, maybe
radios
– Reduced productivity
– More time consuming/more costly
– Not easy to be in two places at once
– Improvised solutions—May compromise safety
– May miss system interactions without specialized expensive tools
Fluke wireless tools 4
5. Troubleshooting methodology
pre wireless
Safety
– Arc Flash is always a concern.
Must work directly in front of live
open panels
– May be required to put on and
remove PPE multiple times
during testing/troubleshooting
– May not be able to access
hazardous areas or areas
containing moving machinery
and rotating equipment
Fluke wireless tools 5
6. Troubleshooting methodology
pre wireless
Multiple readings may require multiple workers, more tools
– More expensive-both in manpower and equipment
– Reduced productivity
– Cant see changes over time without specialized expensive tools
– No ability to easily see cause and effect or multiphase readings
simultaneously

7. A wireless test tool system is:
A group of tools that can display, record, communicate multiple
measurements from a distance to a meter or a pc which will:
– Increase Productivity
– Maximize Safety
– Improve Convenience
Fluke wireless tools 7
8. Benefits of wireless test tools
Increase your productivity
– Isolate problems faster
by taking multiple measurements at the same time, and viewing them all at the same place
– Spend less time waiting
for the measurements you need by logging while you work elsewhere
– Minimize writing measurements down
log, time-stamp and document

9. Wireless tools offer increased
productivity
• Allow you to see interactions in a system, circuit
or machine
• Allow you look for cause-effect, start-stop, or input-output,
when switching loads on and off
With wireless tools, you can:
– Monitor multiple parameters at the same time,
on one screen.
– See multiple measurements at the same time
which enables you to see interactions of multiple
measurement points in a machine.
Thus, you can isolate problems faster.
Saving time, saves money.

10. Wireless tools offer increased
productivity — log data over time
• Troubleshoot intermittent problems in the
system or machine.
• Use logging while you work elsewhere.
• Document and review results.
With wireless tools:
– You don’t need to wait for measurements;
logging data lets you see what happened
during the day, shift or week.
– Logging and time-stamping readings
eliminates the chore of recording by hand.
– Logging allows the modules to work for you.

11. Logging data over time allows you to:
• Store logged readings for viewing and analysis on a computer.
• Find elusive intermittent conditions.
• Monitor processes and review results in a diagnostic environment.
• Solve intermittent or power issues.

14. Benefits of wireless test tools
Maximize safety
– Make measurements safely at a distance.
– Reduce arc flash potential incidents and reduce liability.
– Minimize expose to a live open panel.
– View readings from behind a closed electrical panel door.
(Not possible pre wireless without panel modifications)
– Reduce the use of PPE.
Fluke wireless tools 14
15. Wireless tools offer improved safety
Minimize exposure directly in
front of a live open panels
– With wireless tools, you can
take measurements at a
distance – away from
dangerous locations – open
electrical panels or rotating or
moving machinery.
Fluke wireless tools 15
16. Wireless tools offer Improved Safety
Do you put on PPE for every
measurement?
– With wireless tools, you can take
measurements from behind a
closed panel wirelessly.
– Once installed with PPE, no need
to don PPE again.
– Just stop by and view readings or
download logged data via a pc.
– No need to open panel again
Fluke wireless tools 16
17. Benefits of wireless test tools
Increased Convenience
– Reduces travel time, moving around
– Resolves separation issues
– No more climbing up /down ladders for multiple readings or tests
– Resolves issues with unusual measurement situations or tight spaces
– Helps to eliminate improvised solutions
– Reduces the use of PPE
– Allows a person to work without an assistant

18. Common facility applications
for wireless tools
• Load checks — Measure circuit ampacity, retrofits or expansion
• Current unbalance
• Voltage unbalance
• Power interruption
• Production test troubleshooting
• Short term real time monitoring of measurements behind closed panels
• General testing/troubleshooting
Fluke wireless tools 18
19. Application: Load Checks
Situation:
•Car wash not running efficiently
Troubleshoot using wireless tools:
•Measure current on each motor to verify that
actual load matches the specified load on
the nameplate
•Measure voltage at the motor to check
connection with the source
Benefits of troubleshooting via wireless
tools:
•Monitoring all three motors and the voltage at
once helps you identify when any of the three
motors are not properly balanced
•Logging and time-stamping events helps you
understand system anomalies without the need
to wait for them to occur
•Viewing measurements away from the point of
measurement keeps you out of hazardous – or
wet – environments
Improved productivity and safety
Fluke wireless tools 19
20. Application: Current Unbalance
Situation:
•Anomalies in the system at a machine load
connected to a circuit
Troubleshoot with wireless tools:
•Check all three current phases at the power
source that supplies the load to ensure the
phases are balanced
•Log phases over a period of time to ensure
readings are consistent and balanced throughout
the shift or longer
Benefits of troubleshooting wirelessly:
•Monitoring multiple measurements at once
helps you isolate the current unbalance faster
•Logging saves you time - you can identify load
balancing issues without being physically
present
•Taking measurements when the panel door is
closed increases safety, reduces PPE
requirements and minimizes risk
Improved productivity and safety
Fluke wireless tools 20
21. Application: Voltage Unbalance
Situation:
•Anomalies in the system at a machine load
connected to a circuit
Troubleshoot with wireless tools:
•Measure incoming voltage by placing voltage
module on each phase
•Verify phase-to-phase voltage, viewing
module readings on CNX DMM
Benefits of troubleshooting wirelessly:
•Monitoring multiple measurements at once
helps you isolate the voltage unbalance faster
•Letting the tools capture min/ max/ average
values and unbalances over time makes your
job easier
•Taking measurements when the panel door is
closed increases safety, reduces PPE
requirements and minimizes risk
Improved productivity and safety

being in hazardous environments or
uncomfortable measurement positions
Improved productivity, safety
and convenience
Fluke wireless tools 22

Editor's Notes
See more, fix faster! Thus, you can isolate problems faster. Get a better understanding of the situation and make decisions sooner.
Some panel covers can way 50 pounds or more which may require two people and installing PPE more than once
