The document discusses the opening title sequence of a group film project and how it uses and challenges conventions of the genre. It establishes the setting and protagonist in the first few shots. It then introduces two female antagonists, challenging the typical single male antagonist convention. It aims to create tension and intrigue by leaving the audience with questions about the antagonists' motives. Throughout, it keeps the audience engaged by including disruptions, mysteries, and implications of violence. The group drew from various films in developing their unconventional approach to structure and characters.

This is a presentation by Dada Robert in a Your Skill Boost masterclass organised by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th of May 2024.
He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.

2. Use
Our opening title sequence uses many codes and conventions of general movies as well
as specifically action movies codes and conventions. The opening scene is our
establishing shot showing the setting of the location we are mainly in as well as being a
wide shot of around 5 seconds so that our audience can get a clear understanding of
where we are to give of some potential ideas of what to expect.
We follow the steps of Todorov theory, and have a equilibrium, that starts off the movie
and opening title sequence which is then followed by a disruption (a significant event
that happens within the 90 minutes of the film to keep the audience hooked). Our film
would also finish on a resolution but within the opening title sequence we follow the
first two steps.
The opening scene features our institution ident which is the logo we created as a group,
as well as credits of who starred within the opening title sequence, filmed, directed and
any music we added in.
Our protagonist (Payman) is introduced which is a typical convention of an opening title
sequence that the audience have an understanding of who features whether if they know
if that person is a protagonist or not it doesn’t matter but they are introduced.
3. Use
Some opening title sequences are very simple without any dialogue others feature a voice over,
and some do have dialogue there isn’t any rule or idea everybody follows. We have basic
dialogue of a few simple words yet this requires a script and counts as a code and convention.
On top of that as a group we also use non-diegetic asynchronous music for the scenes with no
dialogue. This ensures our audience aren’t bored of sat in silence but our music also benefits
us as it doesn’t give them any clues of what is about to happen.
Our group’s outfit are very plain we’re all wearing black tops and trousers. Due to weather
circumstances we have coats on, that aren’t black this afterwards we realised worked better as
it helps to not give our audience any idea of what is going to happen. As all black can connote
horror or something negative therefore the khaki green and dark blue over layers changes that
perspective.
Finally our group uses other codes and conventions such as creating a certain feeling for the
audience whether it be an emotional or physical feeling. We attempt to create tension
throughout to keep our audience engaged, this can create impatience but that isn’t a negative
as they cannot wait to see what happens. Because we give no clues the audience would assume
we are a stereotypical action/drama but we aren’t and that is shown as the opening title
sequence goes on.
4. Challenge
As a group I believe we really challenge certain codes and conventions that
feature in action/dramas as well as other movies. The audience are introduced
to two antagonist’s within the first 2 minutes of this potential 90 minute film.
This challenges us as well as the “codes and conventions” as usually antagonists
aren’t introduced straight away as the audience should have a ground
understanding of the protagonist and maybe a bit of background information
about them or at least see them when they aren’t being a hero like in The
Amazing Spider-Man or Hunger Games for example. On top of that we
introduce 2 antagonists at once- this is rare as most movies have one antagonist
against the protagonist and other people supporting the protagonist.
Another point adding to above is that both our antagonists are female. We have
taken a new route with the typical codes and conventions of antagonists and
protagonists as our antagonists are female and there is 2 of them as I previously
mentioned. For me this is a big point and part of opening title sequence as it
completely changes everything the audience expect.
5. Challenge
Throughout our opening title sequence we have numerous enigma codes. What
are the girls doing? Who are they? Are they good or bad? Why is Payman put in
the boot? All of these add effect from the start as it makes the audience
question everything. Are the enigma codes attempting to tell the audience
anything? We didn’t try to but small hints such as the dialogue could.
Within the 2 minutes of our opening title sequence we also use Todorov’s
theory again and have a disruption which is a significant event within a film.
This challenges the usual codes and conventions as a disruption would normally
happen during the middle of the movie to keep the audience hooked until the
end but even from the beginning we are keeping our audience engaged.
To get all of our ideas for our main task and to use as well as challenge the usual
codes and conventions we as a group and individually watched opening title
sequences and action/dramas movie scenes. Came together with different ideas
and then decided our favourite and included different things each person
suggested.
6. Develop
As a group we all developed our idea and the usual codes and
conventions of opening title sequences as well as action/drama
movies. No specific opening title sequence inspired us but more
the idea of being unique and based on other movies we had seen.
A lot of our ideas were based on superheroes, thrillers and real life
documentaries. Our final idea of Nimisha discovering Payman
was her own idea and this often comes from a real life situation
that someone has to discover a dead or attacked body. Our
“superhero” ideas are from the fact that in them genre of movie
the antagonist and protagonist go up against one another accept
we flip the result of the protagonist successfully beating the
antagonist.
A lot of thrillers include scenes of attack and potential death-
therefore we want that small aspect added to our opening title
sequence to add and create tension.
7. Conclusion
On the whole, as a group we all individually as well as together,
used, challenged and developed forms and conventions of real
media products.
Throughout the whole process of our media coursework starting
with our preliminary task right through to the end, we have all
contributed and pulled our weight to finishing the requirements
of our G321 Blog.
Throughout filming we’ve each taken up different roles to help
ensure the main task is finished. We have all contributed to
filming at different times, playing a role and editing. This is a
major part of working as a group, as we have all shown and
developed different skills, as well as doing things we may have
not particularly wanted to do.
