Improving Waste
Management Practices in
Shopping Centres
Shopping centres are an important part of
the Australian culture. This is especially true
nowadays, as the ideals of consumerism
have appealed to people’s minds through
different modern marketing media. But, as
more people visit the malls and more
businesses build shopping precincts, it’s just
logical to expect that the volume of waste
will dramatically increase. This undoubtedly
poses some hazards to the environment and
the people.
Shopping centres and commercial districts
should come up with a blueprint that will
make waste management programs efficient.
Here are some factors to consider.
Auditing Waste
First, the shopping centre should structure a
team that will audit the types of waste
generated by customers and
concessionaires. After the identification of
waste type, the group will then have to
gauge the quantity (usually in weight) of the
waste.
This part of the process will help the shopping mall streamline the disposal of the waste by
choosing the right conduit based on the most common type of waste generated. It will
help the management quantify the potential revenues from selling the recyclables.
Initiatives in Recycling
There should be a separate team that will take care of recycling of waste materials that
need to be reused or repurposed. This team should work on the legal requirements of the
activity and choosing the facility for the recycling. They’re also supposed to set metrics to
gauge the success of the program.
Education
It should be part of the shopping centre’s commitment to advocate the value of
recycling. The management should task the marketing department of disseminating the
message about the significance and benefits of recycling. The team may also organise
activities regarding it. It may also use social media for more extended reach.
These are only some of the things that shopping centres may follow to make their places
clean and green. The management can further its cause by organizing incentive-based
activities that will encourage shoppers to recycle.
