de comunicación a lo largo de los Siglos, desde tiempos antiguos hasta el siglo XXI. Con base en dicha información
y de acuerdo a una Rúbrica de Evaluación deberán elaborar una línea de tiempo que incluya inventos, hechos y

2. Communication in Ancient Times
The first means of communication was, of course, the human
voicebutabout3,200BCwritingwasinventedinIraq andEgypt.
It was invented about 1,500 BC in China. Othercivilizations in
Central America like the Mayans also invented systems of
writing.
The next big step was the invention of the alphabet in what is
nowIsraelandLebanonabout1,600BC.
IntheAncientWorldmanycivilizations includingEgypt,Assyria,
Persia, Rome and China had efficient postal systems to deliver
messagestopartsoftheirempiresusingrelaysofhorses.
In the ancient world people wrote on papyrus or parchment.
However the Chinese invented paper about 200 BC. The
knowledge of how to make paper passed to the Arabs and in
theMiddleAgesitreachedEurope.
Communication 1500-1800
The next major improvement in communication was the
inventionofprinting.TheChineseinventedprintingwithblocks
in the6thcenturyADbut the first knownprintedbookwas the
DiamondSutraof686.
InEuropeinthemid-15thcenturyJohannes Gutenberginvented
theprintingpress,whichmadebooksmuchcheaperandallowed
newspapers to be invented. William Caxton introduced the
printingpressintoEnglandin1476.
Thefirstnewspaperswereprinted inthe17thcentury.Thefirst
newspaper in Englandwasprinted in 1641. (However theword
newspaper was not recorded until 1670). The first successful
dailynewspaperinBritainwasprintedin1702.
Meanwhile European monarchs set up postal services to carry
their messages. In France Louis XI founded one in 1477 and in
England Henry VIII created the Royal Mail in 1512. In 1635 to
raisemoneyCharlesIallowedprivatecitizenstosendmessages
byRoyalMail,forafee.
Meanwhilethepencilwasinventedin1564.
Communication in the 19th Century
In 1840 Rowland Hill invented the Penny Post. In 1874 the
UniversalPostalUnionwasformedtocoordinate postalservices
indifferentcountries.
MeanwhileRalphWedgwoodinventedcarbonpaperin1806.
Thetelegraphwasinventedin1837.Acablewaslaidacrossthe
Channelin1850andafter1866itwaspossibletosendmessages
acrosstheAtlantic.
Meanwhile the first fax machine was invented in 1843. A Scot,
AlexanderGrahamBell,inventedthetelephonein1876.Thefirst
telephone exchange in Britain opened in 1879. The first
telephone directory in London waspublished in 1880. The first
telephone line from Paris to Brussels was established in 1887.
The first line from London to Paris opened in 1891. The first
transatlantictelephonelineopenedin1927.In1930atelephone
linkfromBritaintoAustraliawasestablished.
Meanwhile the first successful typewriter went on sale in 1874
andthefirstsuccessfulfountainpenwasmadein1884.
In1829LouisBrailleinventedanembossedtypefacefortheblind
andin1837IsaacPitmaninventedshorthand.Thefirstsuccessful
rotaryprintingpresswasinventedbyRichardMHoein1846.
Communication in the 20th Century
In1901MarconisentaradiomessageacrosstheAtlantic.Radio
broadcastingbeganinBritainin1922whentheBBCwasformed.
By1933halfthehouseholdsinBritainhadaradio.
Following the 1972 Sound Broadcasting Act independent radio
stationswereformed.
Televisionwasinventedin1925byJohnLogieBaird.
In 1960 the first communications satellite, Echo was launched.
ThelaserprinterwasinventedbyGaryStarkweatherin1969.
Martin Cooper invented the first handheld first cell phone in
1973. The first mobile phone call in Britain was made in 1985.
The first commercial text was sent in 1992. In Britain
smartphoneswereintroducedin1996.
Communication in The 21st Century
Intheearly21stcenturytheinternetbecamean importantform
of communication. Today email has become one of the most
popularmethodsofcommunication.Inthe2010sebookreaders
becamecommon.
