Proficiency in health and nutrition as a unit increases the vocabulary base of the ESL students of the chosen age and also increases their prowess and language proficiency.
It is of interest to the teacher that the children learn different types of foods according to their diet categories and also increase their word power. The expectation is that since children at the chosen developmental stage are intrigued by different foods and snacks, teaching concepts and engaging them in ideas will be easy. The objectives that the minor will be covering are the values and effects of food in our
historical and present day society. It will cover how food has played a role in cultures around the
world, and help gain new and supportive perspectives towards abstract food concepts. With better
knowledge about food, I feel better knowledge about food will allow our globe and the earthlings that
habitat on it to thrive.
Part 2: Application Essay
Food’s Place in Society will take a look at food in an interdisciplinary manner, examining
many subjects such as technology, culture, sociology, economics and history through their
relationship with food. Each culture, region, religion, and family has its own style of eating: what
type of food, how it is prepared, how it is ingested, and what production process it went through in
order to make it to the consumer. By studying these concepts about food and our world more
knowledge can be obtained on how to keep our globe healthy, our people happy and our minds open.
Food’s Place in Society mostly resembles the Anthropology of Food minor. This is because it
focuses on the studies of how food plays an important role within society and culture through
anthropological methods. This minor uses only anthropology, while the minor I am presenting takes
a broader variety of perspectives such as geography, politics, and economy to examine food. I
originally decided on Anthropology of Food minor and completed a few of its courses that I would
like to use for Food’s Place in Society because of their overlapping objectives. Furthermore, the

minor would introduce specific cultures by looking at their food production, food’s spiritual role to
them, and the social rituals included in their food preparation and consumption.
The courses for the minor use food as a unifying subject and the connection it has to society.
Since food plays such a large role in every person’s life, I feel that understanding and examining
food’s place is crucial. By taking an academic and critical look of food, starting from the farms,
gardens or factories to the dining tables, offering plates or even dumps, food justice, world hunger,
and other food related issues can be better assessed and improved.
I hope to gain useful information on the way food is structured and feeds our world. Food
related issues will always reside within a society, and I feel that by turning a blind eye to it the
problems are less likely to be resolved and end up causing further more serious issues in the future.
These problems include world hunger, a sustainable environment, animal well fair, workers’ well
being, and the general public’s health. Other useful knowledge that will be gained is the reasoning
behind certain cultural practices and being able to have an understanding towards different ways of
life. The courses I chose for this minor will help build a strong empathy towards certain cultural food
practices that may be unfamiliar, along with being aware and sensitive to the system and structure
that is created around food.
I feel that this minor is a good fit for me because I have always been intrigued by food and
cultures. With my experience traveling around the world and trying numerous types of dishes in a
variety of locations, I have already obtained very well rounded background knowledge about the
topic. With recently turning vegetarian the past four years have made me open my eyes more to the
political and sociological side of food. Because of my previous completion of courses that cover
similar objectives, the extensive background knowledge I have acquired, and my passion for
knowledge about food’s place in society, I feel that this minor will be a successful pursuit.
