HIV infects and destroys CD4+ T cells, weakening the immune system and leaving the infected person vulnerable to opportunistic infections and cancers. Over time, HIV can cause AIDS if not treated. Antiretroviral drugs can suppress HIV and stop the progression to AIDS, but cannot cure the infection entirely.
