This document discusses immigration and the growth of American cities in the late 19th/early 20th century. Large numbers of immigrants came to US cities seeking opportunities and freedom. They provided labor that fueled industries in cities like Pittsburgh, Chicago, and Detroit, causing rapid urbanization. However, this also led to overcrowded tenement housing, unsanitary conditions, and the rise of political machines to help immigrants but also become corrupt. Settlement houses and social reforms aimed to address these issues in growing industrial cities.
