Ladies and Gentlemen,We live in times of enormous change. Economic and social uncertainty dominates the front pages of our newspapers. Newspapers that are themselves faced with an identity crisis. The financial crisis and the political turmoil in Europe is causing a the slowdown of our economy that narrowly escaped a recession this quarter. Companies are laying off and multinationals are closing down plants because of overcapacity…
We embedded this edition of our conference in the Creative Media Days, an impressive line-up of no less than 17 conferences and meetings. There are few domains where the digital revolution are having as big an impact as Media. We decide to bring together a number of speakers with very different backgrounds and opinions that will give their insights in the delicate balance we have to find between maximizing the potential of new technologies and a continued guarantee of trusted sources providing us with quality information on which to base our choices. I will be using a lot of media examples during this talk to illustrate the impact of ICT as a driver for change but also from time to time divert to to other fields, very much like this conference day.
Last week I hurt my finger. The short-term impact of this was that I could not type anymore. The longer-term that I started thinking of it as a metaphor for our economy.
Change is a good things but the process of creative destruction that drives our economies can cause pain especially in the short-term but also provides us with long-term economic prosperity if we manage it right. Our sector, the ICT sector, has always been a driver of change, and now more than ever we need to work on ensuring this change results in long-term positive effects for our society.
My name is Wim De Waele and I am the CEO of the organization formerly known as the Interdisciplinary Institute of Broadband Technology. I am very happy to see so many faces, new and familiar, in this audience and hope you will all enjoy this day at the ICC.
So is ICT indeed so important for our economy? I believe it is. Last month, the OECD released a report on the Internet Economy. One of the most striking trends is shown in this chart which shows the evolution of employment in the top 250 companies within different segments of the ICT industry between 2000 and 2011. It clearly shows that Internet and software companies have continued to grow and add employment over the last decade irrespective of the turmoil caused by the financial crisis. The report estimates that up to 13% of the growth of the US economy can be attributed to Internet related activities. Building a healthy economic ICT sector here in Flanders is crucial for our future.
Economic impact also has other societal implications. Let me refer back to my media example. Last week the Flemish newspapers published their distribution statistics. Digital distribution is gaining in importance for a number of them but advertising revenue is lagging behind. This chart indicates the news consumption by age group in the US. Faced with inevitable changes in behaviour as the digital natives take over, we need to ensure the quality of content creation is kept intact while the economic models shift.
Over the last 7 years, we we have worked with many partners closely in more than 450 projects.
We have all seen those charts showing the accelerating pace of market introduction of consecutive waves of technology and shrinking product lifecyles. The speed of innovation has given birth to concepts such as agile development and radical programming. At iMinds we have always advocated an interdisciplinary/user centric approach to research but foremost we believe we need to adapt to our environment and evolve towards what Danny Goderis, our new COO,describes as AGILE RESEARCH. Our decision to limit the duration of our MIX ICON projects to one year is an llustration of this evolution. We do not know all the answers but will continue to work on closing the gap between what is perceived as a long-term academic world and a short-term business reality.I cannot cover all of the dimensions of our research approach in this talk but would like to specifically focus on the importance of security and the role of the user in our approach.
Let us talk about security first. A couple of weeks ago I was in Silicon Valley and spent some time at Facebook headquarters. In a discussion there somebody said, well you know ‘privacy is a horse that is already long out of the barn’. I am not convinced this is just to be taken for granted. With the growing importance of ICT in our daily lives comes increased responsibility.
Market regulators have a role to play in this context but more often than not they are way behind and by the time they have come around to solving a problem the technological reality has caught up with them.
That safety and security on the Internet is a topic with broad societal relevance is illustrated by these numbers. Digimeter, our in-depth survey of more than 1000 citizens about their media ownership and usage. We created this because we noticed that there’s still a lack of relevant data concerning the possession and use of media technologies in Flanders. Digimeter is a tool for our ilab-o team which brings me to the other topic I wanted to spend some time on: the central role of the user in our approach. iMinds has invested heavily in a technical and user test environment in support of our own research and venturing.
MIX officially started on January 1st, 2012. The task of the Media Innovation Center is to support innovation projects for and with the media, and to give a new impulse to the Flemish digital media landscape, using its yearly 5 Mio Euro budget as a catalyst for broader change. MIX is our answer to the quickly changing innovation context for the media sector and the rise of international competition and an example of how we are engaging not just with technology companies but with the companies whose core business is media. A model we would like to copy to other verticals in the future. We invite every one of you who has ideas to contact MIX.
Let me now turn to incubation and venturing. Earlier this week we organized the Fail conference. I could not resist the temptation of showing the video of Lisa, part of our incubation and venturing tea.
The Fail conference was our attempt at removing the stigma of failing. Failing is inherent in an entrepreneurial context . When I was about thirty I tried to do a start-up that did not go anywhere and eventually was sold to SAP. I learned a lot from that experience and started again. But that does not mean we should not create an environment in which we give entrepreneurs a maximum chance of success. I am personally very happy we have managed to build a strong practice now that supports our starters in the difficult environment we are in.
Rather than describe our approach in detail let me point out some important steps we have taken over the last two years
Two years ago our minister agreed to step up the funding for this program and as a result we see a sharp acceleratiion. We helped create 14 spin-offs until 2010 but then in 2011, after the increased funding and after we opened up the program for starters that were not necessarily coming out of our research groups alone, 11 starters were launched and in 2012 we will probably have selected somewhere between 15 and 20 incubation istart projects. As study on the lack of YOLLIES in Europe points out, lack of a comparable venture capital eco-system is one of the main issues. Our incubation efforts can be a lot more efficient now we are able to access the SOFI fund that provides small seed-investments of 50K to our incubees and larger follow-up investments to successful starters
Last year we also launched our istart light program for student entrepreneurs and the startup-garage, a workspace for these student teams and other entrepreneurs that want to work out of a co-working space. These young guys and girls with fresh ideas are the ideal hotbed of ideas and teaming up them up with experienced entrepreneurs is the best way to guarantee an outcome.
Earlier I talked about the Art&D program. Video stitching technology that was used there has been put toe an entirely different use by the Camargus startup that has built a panoramic camera system with some revolutionary features. They target the 20.000 stadiums and 100.000 sports arenas that will like to have control over their video content and production in the future.
Another example of a starter is Zeticon with the Mediahaven project. Zeticon was created as the result of the various archiving and media management projects we had over the last five years. With customers such as SBS, Telenet and a number of other media companies they are ready to expand into other markets.
Digital media companies struggle with the complex world of IT.CanditMedia supports any company with a rapidly growing and increasingly unmanageable level of digital media with its computing and storage platform, that is is unique in its ability to cope with the digital media industry's massive storage and data transfer requirements. CandITMedia has focused on the large digital media market in the UK and is showing serious growth. Companies like this who have a real technological differentiator would not be there without years of serious R&D investment.
But for their further expansion they need adequate investment, smart money to allow them to go international. That is why I want to make a case to government for a tax shelter for technology companies similar to what they have done for the movie industry. Look what the tax shelter did for the movie industry. Since its 2003 launch 462 projects received tax shelter support, 2.3 Bio Euro was invested and the quality and quantity of our movie production has increased dramatically. If we are as serious about building a ICT eco-system as we are about our movie industry efforts such as iMinds are not sufficient. We need to move companies from the early-stage to the YOLLIE phase.
Ladies and Gentlemen. I hope to have provided you with a good overview of the approach iMinds has taken to fulfill its mission. I have focused primarily on our media activities because of the theme of the week but I would like to end that it does not stop there. ICT also is a change-agent in health-care, energy and manufacturing. Last year I presented our strategy for the next five years, today I wanted to show you that we are executing and will continue to so so.
Let me leave you with an image you will remember. It is always my prerogative to invite you to the evening program of entertainment. After our socializer we have a performance of the roller babes at 7 pm, followed by a doodle battle in the wintercircus worth visiting if only for the maginificentbuiding and then the afterparty in another historic building the cultural centreVooruit.
