NO ONE KNOWS WHAT TO DO WITH IT

A SuperMinds 2014 Talk by Danny Hughes (iMinds - DistriNet - KU Leuven) Smart-phones together with networks of sensors and actuators are already a pervasive element of our daily lives. Now is the dawn of the ‘Internet of Things’. But how can we handle the complexity of connecting the next 10 billion Internet devices? How can we build elegant, manageable and secure applications to tackle important problems? In this presentation, I will make the case for the ‘Internet of Everything’, wherein embedded devices, software services and human participants work collaboratively to solve critical industrial and societal problems.

A SuperMinds 2014 Talk by Ilse Marien (iMinds - SMIT – VUB) Debates on combining parenthood with a challenging career have been going on for years. While they have mostly been translated into the disadvantaged position of women, I would in this regard like to open up the debate and take a stance for a feasible work-life balance for all parents working in academia. No matter from which angle you consider parenthood with an academic career, the negative consequences are there. Working towards deadlines nights in a row, reading or writing during weekends, catching up on sleep whenever you see fit … all of these things change once you have kids. However, having kids does not imply that you become a lesser researcher than your peers. You just need to go about things differently. And flexibility, trust and support of your research institution become key to enable you to be as good a researcher as you were before kids came into the picture. During this talk I would like to address the various solutions and interventions that could be realized by research institutions and, of course, at an iMinds level to enable a more fitted and healthy work-life balance.

A SuperMinds 2014 Talk by Olivier Braet (iMinds - SMIT – VUB). How annoyed are you by the generalizations business gurus make about technological innovations? And how can we move away from the dreary world of airport management handbooks, that make grand and bland statements about how everything is about to change everywhere at the same time? Have they forgotten the insight that the future might be here, but it certainly isn’t evenly distributed? Without ignoring the profound impact that technological innovations are having on several industries, my presentation will showcase a sober look on industry disruptions, building on the case of educational games.
