1. The chart illustrates the historical data on the proportion of the elderly in four countries, India,
China, Japan, and the US within the period 1980 to 2050 projections.
Overall, the percentage of the aging population in four countries has been increasing since 1980
and is predicted to grow until 2050 with the highest growth rate in the US. The United States
was also the highest in terms of the percentage of the aging population compared to others.
The growth of the aging population in India, Japan, and China shows the same pattern. In the
past, before 2020, they had a slight increase, while in the future, the numbers are expected to
rise in a significant way reaching 12%, 22%, and 25% respectively.
The growth of the aging population in India, Japan, and China shows the similar pattern of a
slight increase until 2020. Five per cent of the population in India and China, respectively,
consisted of elder people, while Japan recorded a moderately higher figure at just above 10%.
By 2020, Japan and India saw a mostly stagnant figure with a rise of less than 5%. However,
China had a sudden surge from 2010 to 2020 to reach slightly more than 10%.
In the future, the three countries also shared a somewhat similar trend. Elderly population in all
three countries inclined to grow quite considerably, with China having the most significant jump
to 25%, overgrowing Japan at a bit more than 20% and India at 10%.
On the other side, the United States had shown dramatic growth even since 1980 from 9% to
29% in 2020. The number is forecasted to reach 36% in 2050.

2. There are two perspectives regarding the medicine testing on animals. One may think that it is
necessary while others think it is cruel. I would say that this practice can be continued as long as
it will not endanger the animal populations or hamper the ecosystem.
To produce ready-to-use medicines, there are severals steps conducted in a pharmaceutical
company, starting from research the ingredients, developing the formula, producing in a
minimum amount, until testing the medicine. All these steps must be done in thorough and
standardized manners to prevent unwilling output when it is delivered to human. Testing is an
essential step before mass production. Usually, it is done to the targeted market to get the
feedback so that the pilot products can be fixed according to market needs and preferences. In
the case of medicines, we could not test it to the human since it potentially creates more
tremendous effects, such as fever, allergy, death, or even pandemic for a larger scale. Therefore,
animals testing is still required.
However, … (why is it cruel?)
In my opinion, animal testing should be carefully conducted. It should be well controlled by
government even in international level. Standardized procedures and regulations followed by
strict law enforcement are needed to limit the use and avoid brutality. For example, the use of
mice frquently should be prohibited in order to maintain the balance of the nature.
In conclusion, I stand for animal testing since it is beneficial for us but I believe that the
government should regulate and control this action in serious manners.
