IDENTIFYING
VARIABLES
IN SCIENCE
Variables are anything that can change or be
changed within an experiment. They are any
factor, trait, or condition that can exist in differing
amounts or types.
A variable therefore is any changeable factor that
may influence the results of an experiment.
WHAT IS A VARIABLE?
INDEPENDENT VARIABLE
An independent variable is
the variable that is
changed or controlled in a
scientific experiment to
test the effects on the
dependent variable.
For example:
Temperature of the room
Amount of water used to water a
plant
Can you think of an example?
DEPENDENT VARIABLE
The dependent variable is the
variable that is being measured
or tested in an experiment. It is
“dependent” on the independent
variable.
For example:
Size of plant
Distance travelled
Time taken
Can you think of an example?
A controlled variable is any
variable that's held constant in an
investigation.
It's not a variable of interest in
the study, but it's controlled
because it could influence the
outcomes.
CONTROLLED VARIABLE
For example:
Time of day
Temperature
Amount of light
Can you think of an example?
We do: In the following example, identify the
independent and dependent variable
Question we are going to investigate:
Do sunflowers grow tall in the sun or shade?
Independent Variable: The amount of sunlight
Dependent Variable: The height of the sunflower plant
We do: What might be some variable that we would
need to control in this experiment
Amount of water
Type of soil
Temperature of the air
Ruler used to measure plant height
Controlled Variables
