IDENTIFYING REAL OR MAKE-
BELIEVE IMAGES
As an intermediate learner, you should know
and learn the difference between reality and make-
believe images. As you are exposed to various media
platforms such as television, social media, and print
media, knowledge on identifying real from make-
believe is an important skill. Through careful and
critical analysis of images, you could develop this
ability making you a thinking audience.
The word “image”
came from the Latin word
“imago” which refers to any
item that depicts visual
perception, such as a
photograph or other two-
dimensional picture,
resembling an object.
Print images
include printed
photographs and images
found in magazines,
newspapers and books.
On the other hand,
non-print images can be
digital images available for
viewing in electronic devices
such as mobile phones,
television and computers.
1. Real images are
pictures which depict
visuals of objects or
happenings that exist in
real life. These are also
known as fact images.
Real images are true; they
are facts that can be
proven. They can be
experienced or witnessed
by a person. They exist and
we can see, hear, feel,
taste, or touch them.
The purposes of these images can be:
a. to inform or to educate (like actual photos of
animals)
b. to tell stories (like in picture-story books)
c. to entertain (like stolen photos with funny
content)
d. to persuade (like the actual photos of burnt
lungs of a smoker to encourage others to quit
smoking).
2. Make-believe images
are pictures which
illustrate something that
is not real.
Though these images may
have some realistic features,
they are just product of
imagination, thus, do not
exist in real life. These are
also known as non-fact
images.
These images can be used with the following
purposes:
a. to entertain (like images of fantasy world and
magical creatures)
b. to tell fiction stories (like picture books of
fairy tales)
c. to persuade (like some editorial cartoons that
express opinions through caricatures and visual
symbols)
Images are sometimes deceiving, these make you
believe something that is NOT TRUE.
SOCIAL NETWORKING SITES provide users with
the capabilities to spread information quickly to
others without confirmation of its truth.
We tend to believe and assume it is true unless
we know for certain that it is not.
How creative are you?
"Creativity is intelligence having fun!"
Draw/ illustrate one real (fact) and make believe (non
fact) image for each paragraph below. For the real
image, you may use the lines from the paragraphs as
clues. For the make believe image, you can think of a
famous fictional character related to it or create your
own imaginary image. Remember, the power of
imagination can create images much farther than
your naked eyes can see.
Bats
Bats are fascinating animals – the only true
flying mammal. Like all mammals they feed their
young ones milk. We don’t see bats very often
because they usually fly around only at night.
During the daytime they hang in dark rooms of
buildings, caves, hollow trees and other dark
places. There are about 900 types of bats. They live
all over the world except in colder regions.
Bats can grow to be big or small. The largest ones
have a wingspan of up to 1.5 metres; others are only 15
cm wide. The mouth of a bat is similar to the one of a
rat or fox. They have large, pointed ears and grey or
brown fur.
Bats have long arms and hands with especially long
fingers. These are connected to the legs with
membranes, which form their wings. The muscles in
them make it easy for a bat to fly. When taking a rest a
bat usually hangs upside down with its claws
connected to a hard surface.
