These slides are part of a "Trends in Memory Desegregation" Webinar published in March 2021. You can see the webinar recording here https://youtu.be/g0QEX5qE8kE.
The presentation slides show how the Open Memory Interface, OMI , is a critical System Architecture building block towards our industry being able to easily build Domain Specific Architectures of the future as defined by the gods of Computing Architecture John Hennessy and David Patterson.
Knowing what's inside and how it works will help you design, develop, and implement applications better, faster, cheaper, more efficient, and easier to use because you will be able to make informed decisions instead of guestimating and assuming.
Sharing High-Performance Interconnects Across Multiple Virtual Machinesinside-BigData.com
In this deck from the Stanford HPC Conference, Mohan Potheri from VMware presents: Sharing High-Performance Interconnects Across Multiple Virtual Machines.
"Virtualized devices offer maximum flexibility: sharing of hardware between virtual machines, the use of VMware vMotion to handle migration and take snapshots. However, when performance is the most critical requirement there are other options. VMware Direct Path I/O delivers excellent performance, but only for a single virtual machine. Single root I/O virtualization (SR-IOV), on the other hand, offers the performance of pass-through mode while allowing devices to be shared by multiple virtual machines.
This session introduces SR-IOV, explains how it is enabled in VMware vSphere, and provides details of specific use cases that important for machine learning and high-performance computing. It includes performance comparisons that demonstrate the benefits of SR-IOV and information on how to configure and tune these configurations."

Optimized HPC/AI cloud with OpenStack acceleration service and composable har...Shuquan Huang
Today data scientist is turning to cloud for AI and HPC workloads. However, AI/HPC applications require high computational throughput where generic cloud resources would not suffice. There is a strong demand for OpenStack to support hardware accelerated devices in a dynamic model.
In this session, we will introduce OpenStack Acceleration Service – Cyborg, which provides a management framework for accelerator devices (e.g. FPGA, GPU, NVMe SSD). We will also discuss Rack Scale Design (RSD) technology and explain how physical hardware resources can be dynamically aggregated to meet the AI/HPC requirements. The ability to “compose on the fly” with workload-optimized hardware and accelerator devices through an API allow data center managers to manage these resources in an efficient automated manner.
We will also introduce an enhanced telemetry solution with Gnnochi, bandwidth discovery and smart scheduling, by leveraging RSD technology, for efficient workloads management in HPC/AI cloud.
AMD has been away from the HPC space for a while, but now they are coming back in a big way with an open software approach to GPU computing. The Radeon Open Compute Platform (ROCm) was born from the Boltzman Initiative announced last year at SC15. Now available on GitHub, the ROCm Platform bringing a rich foundation to advanced computing by better integrating the CPU and GPU to solve real-world problems.
"We are excited to present ROCm, the first open-source HPC/ultrascale-class platform for GPU computing that’s also programming-language independent. We are bringing the UNIX philosophy of choice, minimalism and modular software development to GPU computing. The new ROCm foundation lets you choose or even develop tools and a language run time for your application."

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!
