We present an integration of rational moral reasoning with emotional intelligence. The moral reasoning system alone could not simulate the different human reactions to the Trolley dilemma and the Footbridge dilemma. However, the combined system can simulate these human moral decision making processes. The introduction of affect in rational ethics is important when robots com-municate with humans in a practical context that includes moral relations and decisions. Moreover, the combination of ratio and affect may be useful for ap-plications in which human moral decision making behavior is simulated, for ex-ample, when agent systems or robots provide healthcare support.

We present a moral reasoner, Moral Coppélia, which combines connectionism, utilitarianism, and ethical theory about the moral duties autonomy, non-maleficence, beneficence, and justice with affective states and personality traits. We, moreover, treat human autonomy in the sense of self-determination as well as making a meaningful choice. Our system combines bottom-up with top-down approaches, calculating the effect of an act on the total moral utility in the world. Moral Coppélia can reproduce the verdicts of medical ethicists and health judges in real-life cases and can handle the emotional differences between logically identical problems such as the Trolley and Footbridge dilemma. It also deals with properties of character and personality such as honesty and humility to explain why logic reasoning is not always descriptive of actual human moral behavior. Apart from simulating known cases, we performed a split-half experiment with the responses of 153 participants in a criminal justice experiment. While fine-tuning the parameters to the first half of the data, the encompassing version of Moral Coppélia was capable of forecasting criminal decisions, leading to a better fit with the second half of the data than either of the loose component parts did. In other words, we found empirical support for the integral contribution of ratio, affect, and personality to moral decision making, which, additionally, could be acceptably simulated by our extended version of the Moral Coppélia system.

The Ethical Decision-Making Process
In Chapter 1, we looked at the “good or bad apple” approach as well as the situational
perspective to help explain ethical and unethical decision making. But this is only one part of
the ethical decision-making picture. We also need to understand the ethical decision-making
process as well. Yes, different people act differently under the same circumstances based on
their individual moral character, and yes, the same person will act differently when the
situational context changes in terms of the nature of the issue, the ethical corporate culture,
and the personal situation and pressures that are being faced. But we also need to understand
the decision-making process we go through when we make ethical decisions, and at what stage
of the process each of the individual and situational factors we have already discussed might
influence or moderate decision making. Building on and borrowing from a series of academic
disciplines and theories including moral philosophy, moral psychology, social psychology,
social economics, organizational behavior, criminology, behavioral science, cognitive
neuroscience, and business ethics, a number of descriptive ethical decision-making theoretical
models have fortunately been proposed to help explain the decision-making process of
individuals leading to ethical or unethical behavior or actions.
Unfortunately, however, to date there does not appear to be a fully comprehensive ethical
decision-making model. For example, following a comprehensive review of ethical decision-
making research, some researchers suggest the following: “If the field of descriptive ethics is
to move forward to strengthen our understanding of the ethical decision-making process, it is
imperative that future studies focus more attention on theory development.”1 Similarly,
according to others there remains a deficiency in ethical decision-making theory: “Unlike in the
past, researchers no longer need to justify their rationale for studying ethics; instead, their
attention needs to focus on developing a more comprehensive theoretical platform upon which
empirical work in behavioral ethics can continue.”2 In other words, the current disagreement
among scholars over which theoretical ethical decision-making model (if any) is the most
appropriate, especially when engaging in empirical research, needs to be addressed. In fact,
some continue to refer to the ethical decision-making process as a “black box.”3
After looking at the various approaches and ethical decision-making models, my own version
of a descriptive ethical decision-making model is outlined in this chapter that attempts to
consolidate the various models that have already been proposed while incorporating other
important aspects of the ethical decision-making process that have at times been neglected.4

Chapter Two
The Ethical Decision-Making Process
In Chapter 1, we looked at the “good or bad apple” approach as well as the situational
perspective to help explain ethical and unethical decision making. But this is only one part of
the ethical decision-making picture. We also need to understand the ethical decision-making
process as well. Yes, different people act differently under the same circumstances based on
their individual moral character, and yes, the same person will act differently when the
situational context changes in terms of the nature of the issue, the ethical corporate culture,
and the personal situation and pressures that are being faced. But we also need to understand
the decision-making process we go through when we make ethical decisions, and at what stage
of the process each of the individual and situational factors we have already discussed might
influence or moderate decision making. Building on and borrowing from a series of academic
disciplines and theories including moral philosophy, moral psychology, social psychology,
social economics, organizational behavior, criminology, behavioral science, cognitive
neuroscience, and business ethics, a number of descriptive ethical decision-making theoretical
models have fortunately been proposed to help explain the decision-making process of
individuals leading to ethical or unethical behavior or actions.
Unfortunately, however, to date there does not appear to be a fully comprehensive ethical
decision-making model. For example, following a comprehensive review of ethical decision-
making research, some researchers suggest the following: “If the field of descriptive ethics is
to move forward to strengthen our understanding of the ethical decision-making process, it is
imperative that future studies focus more attention on theory development.”1 Similarly,
according to others there remains a deficiency in ethical decision-making theory: “Unlike in the
past, researchers no longer need to justify their rationale for studying ethics; instead, their
attention needs to focus on developing a more comprehensive theoretical platform upon which
empirical work in behavioral ethics can continue.”2 In other words, the current disagreement
among scholars over which theoretical ethical decision-making model (if any) is the most
appropriate, especially when engaging in empirical research, needs to be addressed. In fact,
some continue to refer to the ethical decision-making process as a “black box.”3
After looking at the various approaches and ethical decision-making models, my own version
of a descriptive ethical decision-making model is outlined in this chapter that attempts to
consolidate the various models that have already been proposed while incorporating other
important aspects of the ethical decision-making process that have at times been neglected.4

Het draait om onze ideeen - pitch lijsttrekkersverkiezingen piratenpartij TK2...
Zoals jullie weten, sta ik hier omdat ik lijsttrekker wil worden
en eigenlijk voelt dat een beetje raar,
want ik praat veel liever over waarom onze ideen beter zijn dan die van andendere partijen,
dan dat ik moet gaan vertellen waarom ik beter zou zijn dan iemand anders,
maar juist dat maakt mij misschien wel een goede lijsttrekker.
Want het is juist een van de grootste probleem in onze samenleving
dat sommige mensen denken dat ze beter zijn dan anderen
en dan de baas gaan spelen over hen.
De geschiedenis laat zien dat macht corrumpeert.
Bij overheden, bewiendsleden, maar ook bedrijven zoals Google, Facebook en de farmaceutische industrie.
Doordat we nu met het internet met elkaar verbonden zijn,
kunnen we met de massa sterker zijn dan wie of wat dan ook.
Als je mensen wil overtuigen, moet je niet alleen weten wat je vindt,
maar vooral ook waarom je het vindt.
Bij ons ligt de kern daarbij in decentralisatie van macht.
Van daaruit kun je al onze kernpunten beredeneren.
Want we vinden privacy niet alleen maar belangrijk omdat we anders bespied worden,
maar ook omdat anders de controleurs te machtig zijn.
We vinden democratie belangrijk omdat anders de bestuurders te machtig worden.
En we vinden vije Informatie belangrijk, want kennis is macht, en die moet zich dus zoveel mogelijk verspreiden.
In de Tweede Kamer moeten we natuurlijk onze standpunten op een heleboel verschillende onderwerpen gaan bepalen, of we dat nou willen of niet.
Dan is het dus belangrijk dat we dat doen op een manier waarop we ook met elkaar verbonden blijven
Ik ben naar IJsland gegaan om te kijken hoe ze dat daar doen,
want daar gaat het eigenlijk heel goed.
En ik het daar ook uitgebreid met Brigitta over gepraat,
en ook zij zei: we focusen vooroal op democratie en decentralisatie
op die manier kunnen we samen standpunten bepalen over een heleboel onderwerpen,
zoals bijvoorbeeld ook het basisinkomen.
En dat kan dus ook,
zolang je altijd maar vanuit de kern blijft redeneren
en prioriteit blijft geven aan de belangrijkste kernpunten
Ik praat graag over deze visie.
Dat deed ik als wetenschapper,
maar dat ben ik bij de Piratenpartij natuurlijk alleen nog maar meer gaan doen,
ook buiten campagnetijd.
Ik heb stukken geschreven, interviews, mediaoptredens,
maar daar ga ik nu verder niet teveel over zeggen.
Ik heb een mooi lijstje gemaakt van 17 kantjes,
waarop jullie het allemaal kunnen terugzien en teruglezen, als jullie willen.
Ik heb veel debatten gevoerd en krijg daar vaak enthousiaste reacties over;
grote groepen mensen toegesproken op demonstraties
Ik werk graag samen met andere bewgingen en organisaties;
haal goede mensen bij de Piratenpartij, zols Jelle, Ancilla, en Niels waarmee we veel ludieke acties hebben gedaan.
Ik vind het leuk om samen met anderen projecten op te zetten,
bijvoorbeeld Crowdsource Europe

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in Education
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. - 7. Problem: Not Able to Simulate Trolley Dilemma vs Footbridge Dilemma • Greene et al. Discussion • The introduction of affect in rational ethics is important when robots communicate with humans in a practical context that includes moral relations and decisions. • Moreover, the combination of ratio and affect may be useful for applications in which human moral decision making behavior is simulated for example, when agent systems or robots provide healthcare support, or in entertainment settings Cartagena, 15-11-2012 IBERAMIA 2012 12
