The document discusses Paul's first letter to the Thessalonians. It provides context for Paul founding the church in Thessalonica and then leaving due to persecution. Paul writes this letter to encourage the church and answer questions they had. The document analyzes various parts of chapter 1, highlighting that Paul thanks God for the church's work of faith, labor of love, and patience of hope. It also examines how Paul and his companions demonstrated the gospel message powerfully through their words, conviction and lives.
We discuss the gifts of diversities of tongues, interpretation of tongues and prophecy. We provide a working definition of each, some examples and guidelines for their application, and encourage simple steps to get started in prophecy.

New Testament Survey - no.23 : Paul - Letter to PhilippiClive Ashby
Â
As part of the New Testament Survey Course, Session 23 provides an overview of the letter of the Apostle Paul to the church in the city of Philippi. This is one of the prison letters of Paul, written from his imprisonment in Rome. It contains a life changing message of joy through life threatening circumstances, and unity through the approach of humility. (Course taught at Harare Theological College - 2016).
The first teaching in the series "Growing Deep in the Gospel". In this teaching we answer the question "Why is the Gospel Important?" by looking at Romans 1:16, several other Bible verses and quotes from pastors and Christian authors. Then in light of the importance of the gospel we look at what we should do with the gospel.

In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.

10. Intro (Acts 17:1-10)
ī¨ Paul entered Thessalonica while on his second
missionary journey.
ī¨ He preached there for three weeks and was
able to establish a church.
ī¨ However, a group of jealous Jews interpreted
Paul's message to mean that he was
proclaiming another ruler in opposition to the
Roman emperor, and he was forced to leave
town
11. IntroâĻ
ī¨ Because of Paul's concern for this young
church, he sent his coworker, Timothy, to learn
how the Thessalonians were doing.
ī¨ Timothy reported that the Christians' faith
remained strong but that they continued to be
persecuted by those who had banished Paul.
ī¨ Timothy also brought back questions which Paul
had not had time to answer during his short
stay.
12. IntroâĻ
ī¨ First Thessalonians was Paul's first attempt at
offering encouragement and answering
questions
ī¨ In fact it was probably the first of Paul's
epistles.
ī¨ It was written from Corinth only a few months
after Paul had left Thessalonica.
13. In 1 Thessalonians Paul offers
encouragement in four major areas:
ī¨ (1) How can I be sure that I will be with
Jesus after death?
ī¨ (2) How can I be sure that Jesus is
coming again?
ī¨ (3) How can I be sure that Jesus hasn't
forgotten me when I am suffering
persecution?
ī¨ (4) How can I be sure that my life is
pleasing to God?
16. WHAT ARE THE THREE POINTS
FOR WHICH PAUL THANKS
GOD FOR THE CHURCH AT
THESSALONICA?
17. WHAT ARE THE THREE POINTS
FOR WHICH PAUL THANKS GOD
FOR THE CHURCH AT
THESSALONICA?
WORK PRODUCED BY FAITH
YOUR LABOR PROMPTED BY
LOVE
YOUR ENDURANCE INSPIRED BY
HOPE
18. (1) ALWAYS THANKED
GOD FOR THEM ALL,
(2) MENTIONED THEM IN THEIR
PRAYERS
(3) CONTINUALLY

CHRISTIAN GRACES (FAITH,
LOVE AND HOPE) WHICH
CHARACTERIZED THEIR LIVES.
21. THEIR FAITH IN GOD WAS NOT
A CONCEPT. BUT THE CHANGE
WAS EVIDENT FROM THEIR

ī¨ you turned to God
from idols
ī¨ to serve the living
and true God
ī¨ to wait for His Son
from heaven
1 Thessalonians 1:3 1 Thessalonians 1:9â10
24. Labour of love
ī¨ A true love for people leads to labour for them;
otherwise it degenerates into mere sentimentality.
ī¨ Moreover, this âlabourâ is kopos, which denotes
âeither the fatiguing nature of what is done or the
magnitude of the exertion requiredâ
ī¨ We are âtaught by God to love one anotherâ (1
Thess. 4:9).
ī¨ We serve Christ because we love Him; this is the
âlabor of loveâ
ī¨ âIf ye love me, keep my commandmentsâ
ī¨ (John 14:15)
25. Patience of hope
ī¨ true hope, which looks expectantly for the
Lordâs return, leads to endurance (hypomonÄ),
which is patient fortitude in the face of
opposition.

34. With power
ī¨ Words spoken in human weakness need to be
confirmed with divine power.
ī¨ The reference is to the internal operation of the
Holy Spirit.
ī¨ 1 Cor. 2:1â5.
ī¨ It is only by his power that the Word can
penetrate peopleâs mind, heart, conscience
and will.
ī¨ Word empowered by Holy Spirit
ī¨ Word of God is the Sword of the Spirit
(Eph:6:17)
36. Deep conviction
ī¨ Paulâs preaching was not only powerful in its
effect but confident in its presentation.
ī¨ He was sure of his message, of its truth and its
relevance, and in consequence was bold in
proclaiming it.
38. Holy Spirit
ī¨ belong to all the other Three
ī¨ the truth of the Word, the conviction with which we
speak it, and the power of its impact on others all
come from the Holy Spirit
ī¨ It is he who illumines our minds, so that we
formulate our message with integrity and clarity.
ī¨ It is he whose inward witness assures us of its
truth, so that we preach it with conviction.
ī¨ And it is he who carries it home with power, so
that the hearers respond to it in penitence, faith
and obedience.
40. Demonstrated Gospel
ī¨ I Thes: 2:10-12
ī¨ Did not think about themselves
ī¨ Lived an incarnational life
ī¨ Their life was open book to be read and
understood.

companions
