Hyphens can be used to add detail to writing in several ways. Hyphens should be used with all numbers from 21-99, with fractions, and with compound adjectives before nouns. Hyphens help combine words into compound terms like "high-priced ipod" or describe things like a "chaos-cluttered bedroom". When reviewing examples, hyphens are not needed for terms like "three fourths", "sister in law", or adjectives like "yellow folders".
