For nutrition and health, it recommends the CDC and USDA websites for information on nutrients, health, obesity, and daily nutrient intake recommendations. For food-borne illnesses, it suggests the FDA, CDC, and FoodKeeper App websites and app for information on safe food handling practices, current outbreaks, and food storage guidelines. For obesity, physical fitness, and metabolic stress, it recommends the Healthy People 2020, Mayo Clinic, and a textbook for details on physical activity goals, weight loss medications and side effects, herbal supplements, and the genetics

1. Resource List for HW3201-01 Contemporary Diet & Nutrition:
Topic for Unit 1: Nutrition and Health
In this unit we learned about macro- and micronutrients, the proper intake of those and how they
work in the body, in addition to the rising obesity rates.
Resources for this can include the Center for Disease Control website which has plenty of
information on nutrients and their correlation with health and obesity (www.cdc.gov). Another
resource for this topic is a link from the USDA website which can help you calculate your DRI
(daily reference intake) for nutrients for a healthy individual (www.fnic.nal.usda.gov). Lastly, a
resource for nutrition and health is www.nutrition.gov, which has helpful information on using
food labels to help you make healthy choices, and the importance of physical activity.
Topic for Unit 4: Food-borne Illnesses
In this unit we learned about food-borne illnesses, the impacts that has on the community and
nation, food-borne pathogens and the importance of proper food handling and cleaning.
Resources for this unit include www.foodsafety.gov which has helpful information on safe food
handling practices. Another helpful website is www.cdc.gov/outbreaks which has information
on current food-borne illnesses and outbreaks. And app developed by the USDA, Cornell
University and Food Marketing Institute called FoodKeeper helps consumers stay more educated
on food and beverage storage and handling. A consumer can even input the food purchased with
expiration dates and the app will give you a reminder so that you use the food before it expires

2. Topic for Unit 8: Obesity, Physical Fitness and Metabolic Stress
For this unit we learned about the obesity epidemic, the lack of physical activity adults have in
their leisure time and about ways individuals try to lose weight, including FDA approved
prescription weight loss drugs.
Resources for this unit include www.healthypeople.gov which provides you information on the
proposes objectives for Health People 2020, particularly for physical activity. Another great
website is www.mayoclinic.org which has helpful information over-the-counter and prescription
weight loss medication, including side effects. There is also information on herbal weight loss
products on this website. Lastly, a great resource was out textbook which was extremely helpful
in understanding obesity and the ways of treating the disease of obesity: Williams’ Essentials of
Nutrition & Diet Therapy 10th Edition by E. Schlenker & S. Roth (2011). There was a certain
quote about obesity that particularly grabbed my attention which stated, “genes load the gun and
a permissive or toxic environment pull the trigger” (Schlenker & Roth, 2011, p. 343). In
addition, the chart on p.346 which included information on the FDA’s approved prescription
weight loss drugs was very informative.
