What’s a Hurricane?
• A large high speed wind storm
• Causes lot’s of damage
• An intense tropical storm with powerful winds
and heavy rain

 A hurricane has fast
winds and heavy rain
 Can be up to 600 miles
across and have strong
winds spiraling inward
and upward at 75 to
200 miles per hour
Hurricane Starters
• Must be 80°F or warmer
• The wind must be blowing the same direction and at
the same speed to force air upward from the ocean
surface
• Winds have to flow outward
Above the storm allowing the
Air below to rise
• Hurricanes typically form
Between 5 to 15° latitude north
And south of the equator
Effect and Damage

• Hurricanes can create
floods and tornados

• Hurricanes can damage
cars, buildings and trees
• The winds around the
eye of a hurricane are
usually the strongest

• Hurricanes usually last for a week moving 10
to 20 miles per hour over the open ocean

land
