Theme The book, The Hunger Games, has one main theme throughout. Suffering and brutality as a
form of entertainment. In Panem, a tribute's suffering, physically and mentally, is used and
prolonged as a form of entertainment for the people, mostly for those who live in the Capitol. The
mind set is that the more the tributes suffer, especially while battling one another, the more
entertaining it becomes. At one time Katniss discussed what made the Games successful and what
didn't. The successes all had in common that they made it so that the tributes did not die immediately
which would limit the entertainment factor. Towards the end of the book, Cato did not die a quick
death as he could have, he remained alive. Once the muttations had surrounded

The Hunger Games: A Dystopian Society
Can you imagine the feeling knowing that at anytime, a close one could be taken away. A best
friend could be stolen. A family member could be killed. Even yourself could be sacrificed for
nothing. Do you think that the emotions a family member may encounter, the sadness of an entire
community, or even just the thought of dying, is worth it to provide a dominant government their
"Hollywood ending"? Well, in the book "The Hunger Games" written by Suzanne Collins, Katniss
Everdeen lives in a dystopian society where her community is divided by 13 different groups. Each
year, their government randomly selects two participants from each group to play in the Hunger
Games, which is a fight to the death among the other participants. In the book, Katniss'...show more

Hunger Game Essay
People would never see me as the winner of the hunger games I simply don't fit the mold .
Whenever the topic comes up people always label me to be the first one to die . But trust me
when the first cannon goes off it will not be mine . Infact my face will never be in the collection
of the dead . Even though most people don't think i'm capable of winning the games because of my
bubbly attitude i'm a good hunter I can easily find myself food in the wild . I know my way around
the wilderness I can tell which tree is good for climbing and what plants are good for eating . I'm also
a quick thinker when there's a problem I can find quick way out .

In a situation you have to be able to stay calm and think . If you freak out in a situation it's very
likely you will be killed or injured . I can calm down and observe when i'm faced with a difficult
task this is something my parents have taught me. It's like if you're drowning the more you struggle
the more water you're gonna swallow and faster you're going to sink but if you calm down and
swim up you can save yourself .
Some people may say that I wouldn't be able to handle the stress of the hunger games that i'm too
weak . Though yes the hunger games is very stressful and emotionally challenging I can stay calm
I have always looked on the bright side of things it helps me stay calm in stressful times and will
help me in the games . The games isn't all about how strong you are take Katniss for example she
was from one of the most undesirable districts and was one of the smaller opponents all the others
doubted her but she still ended on top .
So people of the capital even though I may seem a weak young girl I wouldn't be so quick to judge .
I can fight just as well as the bigger tributes .I will use my hunting skills to keep me fed . I can
navigate through the forest and I know what to look for . I also can stay calm in situations where it's
hard to do so . Like Les miserables says we'll fight like twenty armies and we won't give up

Culture In The Hunger Games
The novel and film series the Hunger Games has a huge cultural following. A significant influence
on the writer, Suzanne Collins, was both Greek and Roman civilizations. ("One story that most
influenced 'The Hunger Games,' it would be the Greek myth of Theseus...I decided that the nature of
The Hunger Games would be very much based on Roman gladiator games..."–Suzanne Collins) We
can relate almost every aspect of The Hunger Games to ancient Roman language, history or culture.
Firstly, the reader of the novels and viewer of the films can see the major impact Latin had on her
thought and the relation of the names of the characters with ones that come from Roman history.
Finally, we can relate these two cultures through their sociopolitical structure,...show more content...
In this film President Snow says "This is the uprising that rocked our land. 13 districts rebelled
against the country that fed them, loved them, protected them." This image shows the destruction of
district 13, the one empowering the rebellion. In the film next to the mushroom cloud, a blooming
flower had been added. This could be a symbolism of the outcome of the destruction of the
rebellion, which is the flourish of a new era. It is the beginning of the use of the games in order to

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins Essay
The Hunger Games novel written by Suzanne Collins reflects significant issues in the reality world
nowadays which relate to the humanity, the poverty, the violence,... It describes the issues through
the characters and what happens in the story, and the most significant issue occurs throughout the
novel is the gap between rich and poor people. In the beginning of the novel, Suzanne Collins
describes clearly the scene of the poverty, the terrible fear of the 12–district's villagers, in contrast to
the wealthy of the Capitol's citizens. The inequality of social classes becomes the theme of the
novel because of its relation and the effects to the plots of the story. And the reason, which leads to
that issue, is the policies of the dictatorship...show more content...
Children in District 12 have no chances for education and have to work as an adult in order to
feed their family. Katniss has to hunt illegally and even risk her life to get into the forest to find
food for her family (Sparknotes, n.d.). Some other villagers are not able to hunt so that means
Katniss's family is luckier than many other families in the same district (Sparknotes, n.d.). When
she is in the Capitol, the meal, which she is having, makes her remember about the basic meal at
home. "Chicken and chunks of oranges cooked in a creamy sauce laid on a bed of pearly white
grain, tiny green peas and onions, rolls shaped like flowers, and for dessert, a pudding the color
of honey" (Collins, S., 2008, p.79). The luxurious meal shows the significant different in living
standard because of the various dishes in the meal in compare with a usual daily bread in District
12. "I try to imagine assembling this meal myself back home" (Collins, S., p.79). At home, Katniss
has to hunt for food, but here at the Capitol, people just sit there, wait for the meal is ready to be
served.
Besides the gap between the Capitol and District 12, the tesserae is the most recognizable system
that reflects the inequality of the people in the same district. The tributes are picked randomly but it
seems like the poor children have more risk than the rich children. Poor children have to put their
name to the reaping

Essay On The Hunger Games
The Hunger Games – Essay By Lauren Wheeler Throughout the whole story of The Hunger Games,
the author Suzanne Collins' personal story plays a major role in the events of the annual hunger
games, and is a great influence on the personality and development of the two tributes from District
12 and their struggle to survive in the cruel, harsh arena. The story of the Hunger Games takes place
in the destroyed nation of North America, which is now Panem and contains twelve districts. These
districts are ruled by the intimidating Capitol. The Hunger Games was created after the districts of
Panem had tried to rebel against the Capitol ultimately failing in the end. As punishment, each
district would have to choose 2 tributes, one female and...show more content...
The girl, whose name is Rue and Katniss decide to team up and work together to destroy the food
stash of the stronger tributes called Careers, which have also teamed up together. After
successfully working out a plan, Katniss destroys the Careers food stash and runs to the area
where Rue and her have agreed to meet back up. On the way back, she witnesses Rue's death at
the hands of a Career. In order to survive, she decides to run even further out into the woods
hoping to find a way to survive. While she's running, the Capitol then announced that both tributes
from the same district can win together. After this she finds Peeta, lying in the mud covered in
leaves and sticks in an attempt to be camouflaged so none of the tributes could find him. Katniss
helps Peeta wash off and tends to a big cut on his leg which was given to him by one of the
Careers. For the next few days, the two hide in a cave allowing each other to rest and show one
another love and affection, ultimately hoping to win over the Capitol. After Peeta is knocked out by
medication, Katniss makes the trek to the cornucopia where the Capitol is hosting what they call a
feast, but it is actually just a way to get all the remaining tributes to fight one another. After surviving
a near death experience, Katniss makes her way back to the cave. When she returns, Peeta is
somewhat healed and they both make the long hike together to the cornucopia. Once they arrive,

The Hunger Games Essay
The book The Hunger Games, portrays a society where people are treated unfairly based on
factors that they cannot control. The people are born into one of 13 districts. There lives vary
drastically based on where they are born. Someone born in the Capitol has a completely different
life than someone born in district 12. A person born in the Capitol lives a wealthy life and is
always treated with respect. On the other hand someone born in district 12 has a life of constant
back breaking work. They live in poverty and struggle to survive.
In the book The Hunger Games, the social class system set up by the Capitol causes people to be
treated very unfairly based on where they are born. The majority of the plot is based around the fact

Katniss and Peeta have to work even harder to overcome the bias against them and win the hearts
of the sponsors and the crowd. Being as poor as they are comes with some benefits and some
disadvantages. They have been under fed most of their lives which means they are skinny and
weak compared to the other tributes. Living in district 12 also gives them the natural sense of
survival. Katniss spends a lot of time hunting to survive which is basically what the hunger
games are. Peeta also uses skills from his trade, like his cake decorating, to give him an upper
hand in the games. Just like in their everyday lives Katniss and Peeta are spending every waking
moment during the games fighting to survive. Because of the social class system set up by the
Capitol people are treated very unfairly based on where they were born.
The time that Suzanne Collins lived in when she was writing this book had a heavy effect on the
plot of the book. It was from watching tv when the concept of the hunger games came to her. She
was surfing the channels and saw a reality tv show where people were competing to stay in the
game and a footage from the invasion of Iraq. The two concepts mixed in her mind and led her to
the hunger games. She published the book in 2008 which was a time when reality shows, like
Survivor, were very popular. If the reader approaches this book thinking of it as a reality tv show, a
lot of the same themes arise.

The film The Hunger Games Essay
The film The Hunger Games, released in 2012 and based off the first book of a literary trilogy,
has become a source of entertainment and intrigue among many Americans. Featuring a futuristic
and dystopian United States, it has captured the imagination for some and kindled a intense
obsession for others. While on the surface this movie might seem to simply be a story with a
riveting plot line about young love, vicious combat, and survival, it is much more than that. As
most films do, if one takes a closer look, The Hunger Games gives rise to multiple sociological
patterns and themes. If one observes with an informed and critical eye, sociological issues that are
embedded in the film are revealed. From this, one can draw cultural and...show more content...
Although this could be seen as a result of the context in which these characters find themselves,
this proclamation by Katniss sheds light on the possibility that she thinks there could be more to
life than just having kids. However, this statement could also be enforcing social norms. Katniss,
who is presumably supposed to want kids as a woman in this story's society, might be stating that,
although she wants to have kids, cannot do so. This could be a result of the fact that she does not
feel that she could properly care for them, or that her world in which she lives is not fit to be the
home of her potential offspring. Another instance in which Katniss's character challenges gender
roles is when Katniss finds the wounded, suffering Peeta and saves his life. This goes against the
typical concept of a male being the stronger, more protective of the two sexes. When Peeta suggests
that Katniss needs to look out for herself, Katniss utterly dismisses the thought: "No, I'm not gonna
leave you. I'm not gonna do that." Instead of Peeta riding in on a horse in shining knight's armor, he
is portrayed to be weak and vulnerable, dependent on Katniss's cunning and skill to save him. Within
this situation, female gender roles are also enforced. Along with coming to Peeta's rescue, Katniss

Theme Of Heroism In The Hunger Games
In the book The Hunger Games, the author Suzanne Collins emphasizes the heroic qualities of the
characters. The book is set in a dystopian society where one boy and one girl from each of the
twelve districts are forced into an arena and need to fight for their life. In the paragraphs below I will
be discussing 6 of the many ways the author has depicted the heroic qualities of the characters
Katniss, Thresh, and Peeta. These protagonist characters demonstrate the qualities, heroism, love,
strong willed, bravery, respect, affection, and, determination. The definition of ahero is someone a

During the earlier part of that scene, Cato nearly kills Katniss but Thresh saves Katniss as he
throws a stone a Cato's head and lets Katniss go. Thresh is a hero as this is a sign of thanks and

Katniss shows her persistence to win the game from the very start of the book to the very end.
On page 205 Katniss quotes " Every step is an effort but I refuse to stop. " this shows how pushes
even though she will face obstacles. Katniss signifies Strength and dedication as she is not only
doing this for her but also for Prim and Rue. The Technique used is persistence. The reason why
Katniss is a hero she strives toward her goal and never gives up. Katniss is an inspiration to many
people as she has the qualities of a hero. Katniss uses this quote to keep her determined to win and
to have a better life in District twelve.
Another heroic quality of Katniss is affection, love and determination. She shows these qualities
through the quote " you're not going to die." " I forbid it." Katniss uses the technique of dialogue
and description. The effect that it has on us ( the reader ) is how she shows her love and generosity
towards Peeta. Katniss is determined to keep Peeta alive and has the urge to win.
Katniss's partner, Peeta also depicts the qualities of a hero. In the novel, Peeta Yells out Katniss

Identity and reality are both often skewed and/or compromised to meet the needs and wants of a
person or platform. More often than not do people and markets put on fronts to be perceived in a
certain way to gain favor in the public eye. They adapt because they have to in order to stay afloat
in the ever changing world of fleeting beauty and immediate gratification. The world of Panem in
The Hunger Games is not much different, in fact, it's more similar than not. In the novel The Hunger
Games by Suzanne Collins, Collins uses construction and manipulation of the authenticity of the
characters to show that identity evolves to fit the demands of the prevailing reality.
Much of the Hunger Games is centered around portraying a certain image, or identity if you will.
The capital manipulates the weaknesses in their society and in their people to create an identity of
unity and nationalism through the way they present the games to the districts of Panem. This idea of
appearing to be one thing but really being another is ingrained in the society of Panem. District 12,
in particular, maintains this image of complacency for the sake of survival, and Katniss is no
exception to this.
To survive, Katniss practices stoicism where she manipulates her emotions to create the identity she
needs. She has become accustom to this way of living, camouflaging her actions and concealing her
true emotions to protect not only herself but also the ones she loves (Prim in this instance). She is

Oppression In The Hunger Games
For thousands of years, governments have been oppressing their people. Although their reasons for
doing so may have been different, the outcomes were all the same: a revolt of the people. There are
many examples of this throughout history, such as in the French Revolution and the American
Revolution. The Hunger Games, a tale of a dystopian society filled with maltreatment by "The
Capitol," displays the path to insurrection triggered by the mounting cases of misery brought on by
their government, that was attacking lower classes of people. By using common themes of
oppression and rebellion found throughout history, The Hunger Games is a striking example of how
repression by government will eventually lead to a revolt of the people.
One of the subtle ways a totalitarian government casts its shadow over its people is through class
distinction. By making the privilege gap so vast between The Capitol and the twelve districts, and
being able to choose which districts will obtain the advantage not only during the Hunger Games,
but in everyday life, The Capitol discreetly displays its control over the people. For example,
Districts 1–3 have far more resources, sponsors, money, and publicity than the other districts, thus
giving them a higher chance in winning the Hunger Games, which is precisely what the government
wants. Conversely, District 12, Katniss' district, is a poverty–stricken mining community that seldom
has enough assets to get them through the day. While

The movie 'The Hunger Games' directed by Gary Ross is an extraordinary fictional tale. A tale set

Every year each district must offer two tributes a male and a female that must fight to the death until
there is one remaining tribute out of twenty–four, who later becomes a victor. An interesting
character in the film is Katniss Everdene, the films heroine. A District 12 citizen, katniss's will to

a past tribute, who became a victor, knows how the games must be played to win. A mid shot on
Katniss's face when told this captures her emotions in a way the lets the audience know the
discomfort the news has brought her. Katniss preformed well during the games, and upheld a

What Is The Role Of Children In The Hunger Games
If any child had to live a life like Katniss and Peeta, then their childhood would be damaged with

Hunger Games Survival Essay
Frank Herbert once said, "Survival is the ability to swim in strange water" (Herbert). When Katniss
Everdeen, a sixteen–year–old from one of the poorest districts in a country called Panem is thrown
into an arena where she would fight to the death with 23 other tributes. This happens in Panem every
year to remind the people that the Capitol is in charge and to prevent another rebellion in the future.
It is called the Hunger Games. When she was thrown into the arena, she did everything she could to
keep herself alive, which is just like swimming in strange water. Katniss had many reasons why she
wanted to survive, and she did, which makes survival a key theme in the book. The theme of the

First, when Rue was killed, she promised that she would win the Games for her. The book states,
"'You have to win,' she says. 'I'm going to. Going to win for both of us now,' I promise" (Collins

formed a friendship, and when it was broken by Rue's death, she felt even more motivated to win
the games for her. Additionally, she also felt the need to survive the rest of the Games after the
boy tribute, Thresh, who was from Rue's district, District 11, killed the girl who was about to
murder Katniss. But instead of killing Katniss too, he let her go because she had helped Rue. As
the text says, "Clove is dangling a foot off the ground, imprisoned in Thresh's arm... Conflicting
emotions cross Thresh's face. He lowers the rock and points at me, almost accusingly. 'Just this
one time, I let you go. For the little girl. You and me, we're even then, no more owed'" (Collins
286, 288). Because Thresh let her go, Katniss felt the motivation again to survive for Rue because
Thresh would have killed her had it not been for her helping Rue. Because of Rue, she was still
alive, so she wanted to do all she could to win for her. To summarize, survival is a key theme of
The Hunger Games because Katniss wanted to survive for Rue because they were allies and
because Thresh let her go because she had befriended Rue. Lastly, the theme of The Hunger Games

Power In The Hunger Games Essay
Power can easily be used for negative purposes, however is difficult to utilize it in a positive nature.
Suzanne Collins The Hunger Games explores re–humanization to resist the capitol's negative power.
Negative power is being explored in Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut to control the public's
abilities. Positive power is having the courage to resist something that oppresses. Doing something
positive with power is hard, doing something negative with power is easy.
In Suzanne Collins The Hunger Games the resistance is taking the form of re–humanising the people
of Panem. The dehumanisation of the Panem over 74 years has been a direct result of negative
power. The emotive language used in "twelve to eighteen year olds are herded into roped...show more

With the courage to replacing her sister in a public execution, Katniss gives people the power to
take back their lives. The motif of appearance in 'I want the audience to recognize you when
you're in the arena,' displays how Cinna recognises how important appearances are in the Capitol.
The use of imagery throughout the ceremony mirrors how displays and appearances are a key
power to overthrow the capitol. Appearance is how she survived, and how she, with others help,
overthrows President Snow. T.E.E. As Harrison Bergeron attempts to overthrow the government
alone he delivers the people of the theatre the power to revive their lost individuality. Emotive
language performed in 'Harrison stripped them of their handicaps' is used to show the audience
how Harrison wants a society where people aren't handicapped. This is a result of him being so
severely and openly oppressed by the government that he now despises the government and wants to
rid the world of what they have done, not only to him, but the the society too. The metaphor of
gravity in 'neutraling gravity with love and pure will' is depicting how the government is gravity
holding the handicapped people down, and removing the handicaps will allow the people to
neutralize gravity. Letting the people express themselves, how Harrison and the ballerina danced
without handicaps. Courage is the positive power that counters and overwhelms negative

When children are forced to grow up fast at a young age due to traumatic events, it shapes them
into fighters, when faced with life and death a person would do almost anything to assure survival.
This is greatly demonstrated in the book The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins when the main
character Katniss Everdeen's world is shifted upside down when her father dies and when she
volunteers as tribute for the Hunger Games. After her father's death the weight of the world was on
Katniss's shoulders, as she had to learn how to provide for, and keep her family alive. Her family

Lastly, Katniss volunteered to take her sisters place in the hunger games when Prim's name was

awful situation and she did the only thing she could to save her life. Fighting for others when
they were too weak to fight for themselves was another characteristic that Katniss demonstrated
throughout the novel. This was displayed in many cases. One way in which this was portrayed
was when Katniss immediately without giving a thought to the matter decided to enroll herself
in the hunger games in order to ensure Prim's safety as well as to save her the terror of the
despicable games. "With one sweep of my arm, I push her behind me. I volunteer! I gasped. I

for her when no one else would, she saved Prim's life and she risked it all for her. Katniss also
took care of and risked much for Peeta when he was injured. As soon as it was announced that two
people could win the hunger games if they were from the same district Katniss immediately made it
her priority to find Peeta. She wanted to do everything in her power to assure his survival. When
Katniss did find Peeta he was badly injured and she spent much time and effort in making him better.

The Hunger Games: Book vs. Movie Essay examples
The Hunger Games, the introductory novel in a trilogy book series written by author Suzanne
Collins in 2008, is a young adult novel that surrounds a teenage girl named Katniss Everdeen in a
futuristic tale of a teenager who defies all odds when they are stacked against her. She is shaken
to the core with sacrifice, adversity and danger when she finds herself forced to compete in a

The film is set up with a sense of mystery surrounding Cinna's character, which will most likely be
developed more as the book series continues. Another difference in the novel that's significant is the
Mockingjay pin that is given to Katniss by Madge, the Governor's daughter once it's known that
Katniss will be participating in the Hunger Games. Madge is described as one of the few people
that Katniss is semi–friendly with; otherwise she is described as a loner who only has time to do
what she has to do to take care of her family. This comes as a surprise to Katniss, who had
assumed that Madge disliked her. This is an important piece of the book because in the movie,
Katniss finds the same Mockingjay pin at the local flea market, and it is given to her by the
owner, a woman named Greasy Sae. The significance of the pin is never explained in the movie,
and viewers are left wondering if it will play an important role later on in the film. The director
and author make many subtle, yet evident changes between the novel and film, which can only be
noticed if one reads the novel and views the movie. However, those that have are left questioning
why the changes were made, and what to expect next. As described in the book, each pair of

Peeta was bleeding from his leg, which resulted in Cato being attacked by Muttations. Katniss
and Peeta are not able to kill each other. The death of Cato leads Katniss and Peeta to kill each
other, however because they can not do so, they choose a double suicide in which they end up as
the victors of the Hunger Games. "We both know they have to have a victor. Yes, they have to
have a victor. Without a victor, the whole thing would blow up in the Gamemakers' faces. They'd
have failed the Capitol. Might possibly even be executed, slowly and painfully while the cameras
broadcast it to every screen in the country. If Peeta and I were both to die, or they thought we
were..." (Collins 339). As they were both about to die they heard "the frantic voice of Claudius
Templesmith shouts above them. "Stop! Stop! Ladies and gentlemen, I am pleased to present the
victors of the Seventy–fourth Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark! I give you – the
tributes of District Twelve!" (Collins 340). Collins showed that Katniss and Peeta were willing to
kill themselves as opposed to killing each

Literary Criticism : ' The Hunger Games '
Yvette Escobedo 26 May 2016 English 102 #0304 Literary Criticism Research Paper Word Count:
Survival through Gender Is it wrong for women to be strong and independent or is that a job for
men? Not every female character is vulnerable and needs saving by a strong male character.
Females containing strong and brave traits are not very welcomed in many different stories and
are usually seen as a rebel. In today's modern day literature, there are more novels with strong
female characters, but are not very welcomed. Katniss Everdeen is an example of a strong female
protagonist, from the novel, "The Hunger Games". Katniss is not a stereotypical female in
Panem, many say she is more masculine than really feminine. When she is sent to the Capital for
the games, she is transformed, more like forced, to look like their ideal female. Katniss Everdeen
had a choice to volunteer as tribute, but did not have a choice when it came to the way she
looked. Katniss Everdeen in the novel "The Hunger Games", is not the Capitols ideal female
tribute because she is strong, independent, and a warrior with strive to survive. Katniss Everdeen is
not a stereotypical female character, she illegally hunts, climbs trees and is not worried about her
appearance. To the Capitol these are not traits that many females poses because women are seen as
desirable, loveable and specifically feminine for females and masculine for males. Katniss Everdeen
in particular has more masculine traits, rather than

Hunger Games Essays

  • 1. Theme The book, The Hunger Games, has one main theme throughout. Suffering and brutality as a form of entertainment. In Panem, a tribute's suffering, physically and mentally, is used and prolonged as a form of entertainment for the people, mostly for those who live in the Capitol. The mind set is that the more the tributes suffer, especially while battling one another, the more entertaining it becomes. At one time Katniss discussed what made the Games successful and what didn't. The successes all had in common that they made it so that the tributes did not die immediately which would limit the entertainment factor. Towards the end of the book, Cato did not die a quick death as he could have, he remained alive. Once the muttations had surrounded Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. The Hunger Games: A Dystopian Society Can you imagine the feeling knowing that at anytime, a close one could be taken away. A best friend could be stolen. A family member could be killed. Even yourself could be sacrificed for nothing. Do you think that the emotions a family member may encounter, the sadness of an entire community, or even just the thought of dying, is worth it to provide a dominant government their "Hollywood ending"? Well, in the book "The Hunger Games" written by Suzanne Collins, Katniss Everdeen lives in a dystopian society where her community is divided by 13 different groups. Each year, their government randomly selects two participants from each group to play in the Hunger Games, which is a fight to the death among the other participants. In the book, Katniss'...show more content... Children do not deserve to be in the type of situation Primrose did. • 4. Hunger Game Essay People would never see me as the winner of the hunger games I simply don't fit the mold . Whenever the topic comes up people always label me to be the first one to die . But trust me when the first cannon goes off it will not be mine . Infact my face will never be in the collection of the dead . Even though most people don't think i'm capable of winning the games because of my bubbly attitude i'm a good hunter I can easily find myself food in the wild . I know my way around the wilderness I can tell which tree is good for climbing and what plants are good for eating . I'm also a quick thinker when there's a problem I can find quick way out . My whole family hunts we always say it's in our DNA the Ledington's are born hunters. This...show more content... In a situation you have to be able to stay calm and think . Some people may say that I wouldn't be able to handle the stress of the hunger games that i'm too weak . Though yes the hunger games is very stressful and emotionally challenging I can stay calm I have always looked on the bright side of things it helps me stay calm in stressful times and will help me in the games . The games isn't all about how strong you are take Katniss for example she was from one of the most undesirable districts and was one of the smaller opponents all the others doubted her but she still ended on top . So people of the capital even though I may seem a weak young girl I wouldn't be so quick to judge . I can fight just as well as the bigger tributes .I will use my hunting skills to keep me fed . I can navigate through the forest and I know what to look for . I also can stay calm in situations where it's hard to do so . • 5. Culture In The Hunger Games The novel and film series the Hunger Games has a huge cultural following. A significant influence on the writer, Suzanne Collins, was both Greek and Roman civilizations. ("One story that most influenced 'The Hunger Games,' it would be the Greek myth of Theseus...I decided that the nature of The Hunger Games would be very much based on Roman gladiator games..."–Suzanne Collins) We can relate almost every aspect of The Hunger Games to ancient Roman language, history or culture. Firstly, the reader of the novels and viewer of the films can see the major impact Latin had on her thought and the relation of the names of the characters with ones that come from Roman history. Finally, we can relate these two cultures through their sociopolitical structure,...show more content... • 6. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins Essay The Hunger Games novel written by Suzanne Collins reflects significant issues in the reality world nowadays which relate to the humanity, the poverty, the violence,... It describes the issues through the characters and what happens in the story, and the most significant issue occurs throughout the novel is the gap between rich and poor people. In the beginning of the novel, Suzanne Collins describes clearly the scene of the poverty, the terrible fear of the 12–district's villagers, in contrast to the wealthy of the Capitol's citizens. The inequality of social classes becomes the theme of the novel because of its relation and the effects to the plots of the story. And the reason, which leads to that issue, is the policies of the dictatorship...show more content... Children in District 12 have no chances for education and have to work as an adult in order to feed their family. Katniss has to hunt illegally and even risk her life to get into the forest to find food for her family (Sparknotes, n.d.). Some other villagers are not able to hunt so that means Katniss's family is luckier than many other families in the same district (Sparknotes, n.d.). When she is in the Capitol, the meal, which she is having, makes her remember about the basic meal at home. "Chicken and chunks of oranges cooked in a creamy sauce laid on a bed of pearly white grain, tiny green peas and onions, rolls shaped like flowers, and for dessert, a pudding the color of honey" (Collins, S., 2008, p.79). The luxurious meal shows the significant different in living standard because of the various dishes in the meal in compare with a usual daily bread in District 12. "I try to imagine assembling this meal myself back home" (Collins, S., p.79). At home, Katniss has to hunt for food, but here at the Capitol, people just sit there, wait for the meal is ready to be served. Besides the gap between the Capitol and District 12, the tesserae is the most recognizable system that reflects the inequality of the people in the same district. The tributes are picked randomly but it seems like the poor children have more risk than the rich children. Poor children have to put their name to the reaping Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Essay On The Hunger Games The Hunger Games – Essay By Lauren Wheeler Throughout the whole story of The Hunger Games, the author Suzanne Collins' personal story plays a major role in the events of the annual hunger games, and is a great influence on the personality and development of the two tributes from District 12 and their struggle to survive in the cruel, harsh arena. The story of the Hunger Games takes place in the destroyed nation of North America, which is now Panem and contains twelve districts. These districts are ruled by the intimidating Capitol. The Hunger Games was created after the districts of Panem had tried to rebel against the Capitol ultimately failing in the end. As punishment, each district would have to choose 2 tributes, one female and...show more content... The girl, whose name is Rue and Katniss decide to team up and work together to destroy the food stash of the stronger tributes called Careers, which have also teamed up together. After successfully working out a plan, Katniss destroys the Careers food stash and runs to the area where Rue and her have agreed to meet back up. On the way back, she witnesses Rue's death at the hands of a Career. In order to survive, she decides to run even further out into the woods hoping to find a way to survive. While she's running, the Capitol then announced that both tributes from the same district can win together. After this she finds Peeta, lying in the mud covered in leaves and sticks in an attempt to be camouflaged so none of the tributes could find him. Katniss helps Peeta wash off and tends to a big cut on his leg which was given to him by one of the Careers. For the next few days, the two hide in a cave allowing each other to rest and show one another love and affection, ultimately hoping to win over the Capitol. After Peeta is knocked out by medication, Katniss makes the trek to the cornucopia where the Capitol is hosting what they call a feast, but it is actually just a way to get all the remaining tributes to fight one another. After surviving a near death experience, Katniss makes her way back to the cave. When she returns, Peeta is somewhat healed and they both make the long hike together to the cornucopia. • 8. The Hunger Games Essay The book The Hunger Games, portrays a society where people are treated unfairly based on factors that they cannot control. The people are born into one of 13 districts. There lives vary drastically based on where they are born. Someone born in the Capitol has a completely different life than someone born in district 12. A person born in the Capitol lives a wealthy life and is always treated with respect. On the other hand someone born in district 12 has a life of constant back breaking work. They live in poverty and struggle to survive. In the book The Hunger Games, the social class system set up by the Capitol causes people to be treated very unfairly based on where they are born. The majority of the plot is based around the fact that...show more content... Katniss and Peeta have to work even harder to overcome the bias against them and win the hearts of the sponsors and the crowd. Being as poor as they are comes with some benefits and some disadvantages. They have been under fed most of their lives which means they are skinny and weak compared to the other tributes. Living in district 12 also gives them the natural sense of survival. Katniss spends a lot of time hunting to survive which is basically what the hunger games are. Peeta also uses skills from his trade, like his cake decorating, to give him an upper hand in the games. Just like in their everyday lives Katniss and Peeta are spending every waking moment during the games fighting to survive. Because of the social class system set up by the Capitol people are treated very unfairly based on where they were born. The time that Suzanne Collins lived in when she was writing this book had a heavy effect on the plot of the book. It was from watching tv when the concept of the hunger games came to her. She was surfing the channels and saw a reality tv show where people were competing to stay in the game and a footage from the invasion of Iraq. The two concepts mixed in her mind and led her to the hunger games. She published the book in 2008 which was a time when reality shows, like Survivor, were very popular. If the reader approaches this book thinking of it as a reality tv show, a lot of the same themes arise. Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. The film The Hunger Games Essay The film The Hunger Games, released in 2012 and based off the first book of a literary trilogy, has become a source of entertainment and intrigue among many Americans. Featuring a futuristic and dystopian United States, it has captured the imagination for some and kindled a intense obsession for others. While on the surface this movie might seem to simply be a story with a riveting plot line about young love, vicious combat, and survival, it is much more than that. As most films do, if one takes a closer look, The Hunger Games gives rise to multiple sociological patterns and themes. If one observes with an informed and critical eye, sociological issues that are embedded in the film are revealed. From this, one can draw cultural and...show more content... Although this could be seen as a result of the context in which these characters find themselves, this proclamation by Katniss sheds light on the possibility that she thinks there could be more to life than just having kids. However, this statement could also be enforcing social norms. Katniss, who is presumably supposed to want kids as a woman in this story's society, might be stating that, although she wants to have kids, cannot do so. This could be a result of the fact that she does not feel that she could properly care for them, or that her world in which she lives is not fit to be the home of her potential offspring. Another instance in which Katniss's character challenges gender roles is when Katniss finds the wounded, suffering Peeta and saves his life. This goes against the typical concept of a male being the stronger, more protective of the two sexes. When Peeta suggests that Katniss needs to look out for herself, Katniss utterly dismisses the thought: "No, I'm not gonna leave you. I'm not gonna do that." Instead of Peeta riding in on a horse in shining knight's armor, he is portrayed to be weak and vulnerable, dependent on Katniss's cunning and skill to save him. Within this situation, female gender roles are also enforced. Along with coming to Peeta's rescue, Katniss Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. Theme Of Heroism In The Hunger Games In the book The Hunger Games, the author Suzanne Collins emphasizes the heroic qualities of the characters. The book is set in a dystopian society where one boy and one girl from each of the twelve districts are forced into an arena and need to fight for their life. In the paragraphs below I will be discussing 6 of the many ways the author has depicted the heroic qualities of the characters Katniss, Thresh, and Peeta. These protagonist characters demonstrate the qualities, heroism, love, strong willed, bravery, respect, affection, and, determination. The definition of ahero is someone a person looks up to for their courage and bravery In part two of The Hunger Games Katniss signifies her heroic qualities of love, affection, and bravery ...show more content... During the earlier part of that scene, Cato nearly kills Katniss but Thresh saves Katniss as he throws a stone a Cato's head and lets Katniss go. Thresh is a hero as this is a sign of thanks and respect. Katniss shows her persistence to win the game from the very start of the book to the very end. On page 205 Katniss quotes " Every step is an effort but I refuse to stop. " this shows how pushes even though she will face obstacles. Katniss signifies Strength and dedication as she is not only doing this for her but also for Prim and Rue. The Technique used is persistence. The reason why Katniss is a hero she strives toward her goal and never gives up. Katniss is an inspiration to many people as she has the qualities of a hero. Katniss uses this quote to keep her determined to win and to have a better life in District twelve. Another heroic quality of Katniss is affection, love and determination. She shows these qualities through the quote " you're not going to die." " I forbid it." Katniss uses the technique of dialogue and description. The effect that it has on us ( the reader ) is how she shows her love and generosity towards Peeta. Katniss is determined to keep Peeta alive and has the urge to win. Katniss's partner, Peeta also depicts the qualities of a hero. In the novel, Peeta Yells out Katniss "Run" he screams "Run". In this scene, Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 11. Identity and reality are both often skewed and/or compromised to meet the needs and wants of a person or platform. More often than not do people and markets put on fronts to be perceived in a certain way to gain favor in the public eye. They adapt because they have to in order to stay afloat in the ever changing world of fleeting beauty and immediate gratification. The world of Panem in The Hunger Games is not much different, in fact, it's more similar than not. In the novel The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, Collins uses construction and manipulation of the authenticity of the characters to show that identity evolves to fit the demands of the prevailing reality. Much of the Hunger Games is centered around portraying a certain image, or identity if you will. The capital manipulates the weaknesses in their society and in their people to create an identity of unity and nationalism through the way they present the games to the districts of Panem. This idea of appearing to be one thing but really being another is ingrained in the society of Panem. District 12, in particular, maintains this image of complacency for the sake of survival, and Katniss is no exception to this. To survive, Katniss practices stoicism where she manipulates her emotions to create the identity she needs. She has become accustom to this way of living, camouflaging her actions and concealing her true emotions to protect not only herself but also the ones she loves (Prim in this instance). She is Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 12. Oppression In The Hunger Games For thousands of years, governments have been oppressing their people. Although their reasons for doing so may have been different, the outcomes were all the same: a revolt of the people. There are many examples of this throughout history, such as in the French Revolution and the American Revolution. The Hunger Games, a tale of a dystopian society filled with maltreatment by "The Capitol," displays the path to insurrection triggered by the mounting cases of misery brought on by their government, that was attacking lower classes of people. By using common themes of oppression and rebellion found throughout history, The Hunger Games is a striking example of how repression by government will eventually lead to a revolt of the people. One of the subtle ways a totalitarian government casts its shadow over its people is through class distinction. By making the privilege gap so vast between The Capitol and the twelve districts, and being able to choose which districts will obtain the advantage not only during the Hunger Games, but in everyday life, The Capitol discreetly displays its control over the people. For example, Districts 1–3 have far more resources, sponsors, money, and publicity than the other districts, thus giving them a higher chance in winning the Hunger Games, which is precisely what the government wants. Conversely, District 12, Katniss' district, is a poverty–stricken mining community that seldom has enough assets to get them through the day. While Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 13. Hunger Games, Film Essay Mikyla Pene–Bavastro The movie 'The Hunger Games' directed by Gary Ross is an extraordinary fictional tale. A tale set in a futuristic dystopia society called 'Panem'. This nation is divided into 12 districts and a capitol. Every year each district must offer two tributes a male and a female that must fight to the death until there is one remaining tribute out of twenty–four, who later becomes a victor. An interesting character in the film is Katniss Everdene, the films heroine. A District 12 citizen, katniss's will to survive and furious attitude is shown from the moment we first see her on screen. Katniss show the audience how everybody has the natural instinct to survive when put in front of difficult situations. Before Katniss enters the games she comes across as stubborn and making friends is not her strong point. Katniss portrays a sympathetic and loving emotion during the games once Hamish, her mentor gave her wise words, 'you have to make people like you'. Hamish being a past tribute, who became a victor, knows how the games must be played to win. A mid shot on Katniss's face when told this captures her emotions in a way the lets the audience know the discomfort the news has brought her. Katniss preformed well during the games, and upheld a persona leading up to the games. Together Katniss and Peeta, the male tribute from district 12 forged a fake love for the satisfaction of the government. In a critical moment in the film after Peeta gets injured they use their 'love' to receive medication, A single kiss helped them get the suplies they needed with a note attached reading "you call that a kiss". Katniss is willing to adapt to lying in order to survive. As the audience, we are positioned to understand to understand her point of view, Katniss does not enjoy killing, nor approve however in order to survive she is willing to do what is nessercery, and as viewers we asked left asking what would we do in this situation? • 14. What Is The Role Of Children In The Hunger Games If any child had to live a life like Katniss and Peeta, then their childhood would be damaged with fear and what "ifs" questions. In the Hunger game, children are treated and talked to like they are twenty–five–year olds. Showing every man for himself. Katniss and the rest of children are faced in a world where they have to hunt to keep all their loved ones alive. Throughout the movie, Katniss plays the mother role at home, taking care her of her little sister, trying to bring food in the house, and trying to be the strong one for being picked for the games. The games are completely different. • 15. Hunger Games Survival Essay Frank Herbert once said, "Survival is the ability to swim in strange water" (Herbert). When Katniss Everdeen, a sixteen–year–old from one of the poorest districts in a country called Panem is thrown into an arena where she would fight to the death with 23 other tributes. This happens in Panem every year to remind the people that the Capitol is in charge and to prevent another rebellion in the future. It is called the Hunger Games. When she was thrown into the arena, she did everything she could to keep herself alive, which is just like swimming in strange water. Katniss had many reasons why she wanted to survive, and she did, which makes survival a key theme in the book. The theme of the book, The Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins, is...show more content... First, when Rue was killed, she promised that she would win the Games for her. The book states, "'You have to win,' she says. 'I'm going to. Going to win for both of us now,' I promise" (Collins 233–234). Because Katniss had worked with Rue and they helped each other out. They had formed a friendship, and when it was broken by Rue's death, she felt even more motivated to win the games for her. Additionally, she also felt the need to survive the rest of the Games after the boy tribute, Thresh, who was from Rue's district, District 11, killed the girl who was about to murder Katniss. But instead of killing Katniss too, he let her go because she had helped Rue. As the text says, "Clove is dangling a foot off the ground, imprisoned in Thresh's arm... Conflicting emotions cross Thresh's face. He lowers the rock and points at me, almost accusingly. 'Just this one time, I let you go. For the little girl. You and me, we're even then, no more owed'" (Collins 286, 288). Because Thresh let her go, Katniss felt the motivation again to survive for Rue because Thresh would have killed her had it not been for her helping Rue. Because of Rue, she was still alive, so she wanted to do all she could to win for her. To summarize, survival is a key theme of The Hunger Games because Katniss wanted to survive for Rue because they were allies and because Thresh let her go because she had befriended Rue. Lastly, the theme of The Hunger Games Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 16. Power In The Hunger Games Essay Power can easily be used for negative purposes, however is difficult to utilize it in a positive nature. Suzanne Collins The Hunger Games explores re–humanization to resist the capitol's negative power. Negative power is being explored in Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut to control the public's abilities. Positive power is having the courage to resist something that oppresses. Doing something positive with power is hard, doing something negative with power is easy. In Suzanne Collins The Hunger Games the resistance is taking the form of re–humanising the people of Panem. The dehumanisation of the Panem over 74 years has been a direct result of negative power. The emotive language used in "twelve to eighteen year olds are herded into roped...show more content... With the courage to replacing her sister in a public execution, Katniss gives people the power to take back their lives. The motif of appearance in 'I want the audience to recognize you when you're in the arena,' displays how Cinna recognises how important appearances are in the Capitol. The use of imagery throughout the ceremony mirrors how displays and appearances are a key power to overthrow the capitol. Appearance is how she survived, and how she, with others help, overthrows President Snow. T.E.E. As Harrison Bergeron attempts to overthrow the government alone he delivers the people of the theatre the power to revive their lost individuality. Emotive language performed in 'Harrison stripped them of their handicaps' is used to show the audience how Harrison wants a society where people aren't handicapped. This is a result of him being so severely and openly oppressed by the government that he now despises the government and wants to rid the world of what they have done, not only to him, but the the society too. The metaphor of gravity in 'neutraling gravity with love and pure will' is depicting how the government is gravity holding the handicapped people down, and removing the handicaps will allow the people to neutralize gravity. Letting the people express themselves, how Harrison and the ballerina danced without handicaps. Courage is the positive power that counters and overwhelms negative Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 17. Hunger Games Essay When children are forced to grow up fast at a young age due to traumatic events, it shapes them into fighters, when faced with life and death a person would do almost anything to assure survival. This is greatly demonstrated in the book The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins when the main character Katniss Everdeen's world is shifted upside down when her father dies and when she volunteers as tribute for the Hunger Games. After her father's death the weight of the world was on Katniss's shoulders, as she had to learn how to provide for, and keep her family alive. Her family consisted of her mother, who suffered severe depression after the death of her husband, and her younger sister Prim who meant the world to her. She inherited hunting...show more content... Lastly, Katniss volunteered to take her sisters place in the hunger games when Prim's name was pulled at the reaping. She could not stand the thought of her sister being thrown into such an awful situation and she did the only thing she could to save her life. Fighting for others when they were too weak to fight for themselves was another characteristic that Katniss demonstrated throughout the novel. This was displayed in many cases. One way in which this was portrayed was when Katniss immediately without giving a thought to the matter decided to enroll herself in the hunger games in order to ensure Prim's safety as well as to save her the terror of the despicable games. "With one sweep of my arm, I push her behind me. I volunteer! I gasped. I volunteer as tribute!"(Collins 22). This showed how Katniss stood up for her sister and fought for her when no one else would, she saved Prim's life and she risked it all for her. Katniss also took care of and risked much for Peeta when he was injured. As soon as it was announced that two people could win the hunger games if they were from the same district Katniss immediately made it her priority to find Peeta. She wanted to do everything in her power to assure his survival. When Katniss did find Peeta he was badly injured and she spent much time and effort in making him better. At one point she even risked her own life to obtain medicine that would Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 18. The Hunger Games: Book vs. Movie Essay examples The Hunger Games, the introductory novel in a trilogy book series written by author Suzanne Collins in 2008, is a young adult novel that surrounds a teenage girl named Katniss Everdeen in a futuristic tale of a teenager who defies all odds when they are stacked against her. She is shaken to the core with sacrifice, adversity and danger when she finds herself forced to compete in a televised series of games where there is only one survivor. Not only does she want to live, but she has an incredible sense of responsibility to her family that she's left behind. The film based off of the best selling novel, also entitled, "The Hunger Games," premiered in March 2012. Director Gary Ross does a great job of incorporating the plot, setting and...show more content... The film is set up with a sense of mystery surrounding Cinna's character, which will most likely be developed more as the book series continues. Another difference in the novel that's significant is the Mockingjay pin that is given to Katniss by Madge, the Governor's daughter once it's known that Katniss will be participating in the Hunger Games. Madge is described as one of the few people that Katniss is semi–friendly with; otherwise she is described as a loner who only has time to do what she has to do to take care of her family. This comes as a surprise to Katniss, who had assumed that Madge disliked her. This is an important piece of the book because in the movie, Katniss finds the same Mockingjay pin at the local flea market, and it is given to her by the owner, a woman named Greasy Sae. The significance of the pin is never explained in the movie, and viewers are left wondering if it will play an important role later on in the film. The director and author make many subtle, yet evident changes between the novel and film, which can only be noticed if one reads the novel and views the movie. However, those that have are left questioning why the changes were made, and what to expect next. As described in the book, each pair of Tributes is provided with a mentor who has won the Hunger Games in the past to help with strategy and to put together a game plan. Katniss shot an arrow in which Peeta was able to push Cato off of the Cornucopia even though Peeta was bleeding from his leg, which resulted in Cato being attacked by Muttations. Katniss and Peeta are not able to kill each other. The death of Cato leads Katniss and Peeta to kill each other, however because they can not do so, they choose a double suicide in which they end up as the victors of the Hunger Games. "We both know they have to have a victor. Yes, they have to have a victor. Without a victor, the whole thing would blow up in the Gamemakers' faces. They'd have failed the Capitol. Might possibly even be executed, slowly and painfully while the cameras broadcast it to every screen in the country. If Peeta and I were both to die, or they thought we were..." (Collins 339). Literary Criticism : ' The Hunger Games ' Yvette Escobedo 26 May 2016 English 102 #0304 Literary Criticism Research Paper Word Count: Survival through Gender Is it wrong for women to be strong and independent or is that a job for men? Not every female character is vulnerable and needs saving by a strong male character. Females containing strong and brave traits are not very welcomed in many different stories and are usually seen as a rebel. In today's modern day literature, there are more novels with strong female characters, but are not very welcomed. Katniss Everdeen is an example of a strong female protagonist, from the novel, "The Hunger Games". Katniss is not a stereotypical female in Panem, many say she is more masculine than really feminine. When she is sent to the Capital for the games, she is transformed, more like forced, to look like their ideal female. Katniss Everdeen had a choice to volunteer as tribute, but did not have a choice when it came to the way she looked. Katniss Everdeen in the novel "The Hunger Games", is not the Capitols ideal female tribute because she is strong, independent, and a warrior with strive to survive. Katniss Everdeen is not a stereotypical female character, she illegally hunts, climbs trees and is not worried about her appearance. To the Capitol these are not traits that many females poses because women are seen as desirable, loveable and specifically feminine for females and masculine for males.
