SPORTS SCIENCE SUPPORT AND ADVICE FOR ALL DISCIPLINES
Whether you’re a complete beginner or seasoned professional, training by yourself or
as part of a team, the Human Performance Unit can provide you with the sports science
testing and coaching to meet your needs.
Based at the University of Essex, we offer support to a wide range of individuals, having worked with
triathletes, cyclists and runners, professional football teams, swimming clubs as well as other sports.
The extensive expertise within the team means we can cater for all your sports science needs and help
you achieve peak performance.
COACHING
Preparing for an endurance sport challenge
requires a consistent period of focussed and
specific preparation. Time must be utilised
effectively to achieve your goals. We combine
coaching expertise with sports science
knowledge to ensure you train in the most
effective way, allowing you to perform at the
peak of your potential. 
We aim to leave no stone unturned – therefore
you will benefit from;

lab assessment data)

At the Human Performance Unit we believe in
delivering training programmes that are tailored to
the individual. Therefore as part of our coaching
service, repeat laboratory assessments are
included at no extra cost to maintain up to date
training zones and monitor progression over time.

PERFORMANCE MONITORING
Training at the right intensity and monitoring
performance is essential in order to reach
peak performance. Our performance tests and
feedback provide you with the information to take
you to the next level.
A bike or run endurance test is a fantastic way
to get to know your own individual physiology.
These tests will establish various physiological
measures including lactate thresholds, VO2 max
and exercise/metabolic efficiency, which allows
our scientists to determine your individualised
training zones, allowing you to plan your training
more effectively.
The tests start at low intensity and speed or
power increase in stages until your body reaches
exhaustion. Personalised training plans are
available tailored to your needs at a cost.

Get race ready with a Retul bike fit to
improve comfort and performance of your
bike.
Each measurement taken on the highly
accurate Retul 3D motion capture system is
correct to within a millimetre.
Adjusting your bike to this level of precision
reduces stress on joints and enables
muscles to work at maximum efficiency.
SPORTS PSYCHOLOGY
It is not all about the physiology, optimising
your mental approach is something that is
often overlooked. Improvements can give
you the edge needed to make a positive
difference to both training and competition.
Everyone’s mind works differently and having
a better understanding of how your thought
processes work can make a difference to
both training and competition.
Our consultations discuss aspects such
as strategies for coping with pressure and
developing mental toughness.
BODY COMPOSITION
A body composition assessment provides
a map of fat and lean mass distribution
around your body.
The measurements gathered will provide
detail for training prescription based upon
strengths and weaknesses within your
measurements.
The data will be used to help establish
individualised dietary requirements which
can be used in conjunction with our
nutrition services.
NUTRITION
Getting your dietary intake right can lead to
performance gains, improved recovery and
better racing—at the Human Performance
Unit we offer nutrition consultations to
discuss individualised nutritional strategies
relative to training, competitive and personal
goals.
Whether you are looking to improve power
to weight ratio, find out about safe sport
supplements, or enhance your general
dietary intake to support your training
and competition, our sports nutrition
consultations will assist you to achieving
your goals.

Whether you’re a complete beginner or seasoned professional, training by yourself or as part of a team, the Human Performance Unit can provide you with the sports science testing and coaching to meet your needs. Based at the University of Essex, we offer support to a wide range of individuals, having worked with triathletes, cyclists and runners, professional football teams, swimming clubs as well as other sports. The extensive expertise within the team means we can cater for all your sports science needs and help you achieve peak performance. COACHING Preparing for an endurance sport challenge requires a consistent period of focussed and specific preparation. Time must be utilised effectively to achieve your goals. We combine coaching expertise with sports science knowledge to ensure you train in the most effective way, allowing you to perform at the peak of your potential.  We aim to leave no stone unturned – therefore you will benefit from; n Detailed needs analysis, goal setting, identifying available training time and lifestyle constraints n Individualised, periodised weekly training plans n Detailed session plans, (tailored to your FREE lab assessment data) n Training load monitoring  n Dietary advice n Recovery strategies n Mobility and resistance exercises At the Human Performance Unit we believe in delivering training programmes that are tailored to the individual. Therefore as part of our coaching service, repeat laboratory assessments are included at no extra cost to maintain up to date training zones and monitor progression over time. For triathlon coaching please enquire for details. PERFORMANCE MONITORING Training at the right intensity and monitoring performance is essential in order to reach peak performance. Our performance tests and feedback provide you with the information to take you to the next level. A bike or run endurance test is a fantastic way to get to know your own individual physiology. These tests will establish various physiological measures including lactate thresholds, VO2 max and exercise/metabolic efficiency, which allows our scientists to determine your individualised training zones, allowing you to plan your training more effectively. The tests start at low intensity and speed or power increase in stages until your body reaches exhaustion. Personalised training plans are available tailored to your needs at a cost. CYCLISTS AND RUNNERS SPORTS SCIENCE RETUL BIKE FIT Get race ready with a Retul bike fit to improve comfort and performance of your bike. Each measurement taken on the highly accurate Retul 3D motion capture system is correct to within a millimetre. Adjusting your bike to this level of precision reduces stress on joints and enables muscles to work at maximum efficiency. SPORTS PSYCHOLOGY It is not all about the physiology, optimising your mental approach is something that is often overlooked. Improvements can give you the edge needed to make a positive difference to both training and competition. Everyone’s mind works differently and having a better understanding of how your thought processes work can make a difference to both training and competition. Our consultations discuss aspects such as strategies for coping with pressure and developing mental toughness. BODY COMPOSITION A body composition assessment provides a map of fat and lean mass distribution around your body. The measurements gathered will provide detail for training prescription based upon strengths and weaknesses within your measurements. The data will be used to help establish individualised dietary requirements which can be used in conjunction with our nutrition services. NUTRITION Getting your dietary intake right can lead to performance gains, improved recovery and better racing—at the Human Performance Unit we offer nutrition consultations to discuss individualised nutritional strategies relative to training, competitive and personal goals. Whether you are looking to improve power to weight ratio, find out about safe sport supplements, or enhance your general dietary intake to support your training and competition, our sports nutrition consultations will assist you to achieving your goals.
