The mise-en-scene shown throughout the music video, is all effective in conveying the initial
idea from ‘The Fray’. Various different types of people are presented, which shows how they
are all from various backgrounds, but they come together within this video which shows
some form of unity surrounding the song. Also, the attire which each character is wearing is
that of a normal, everyday, casual look which is simple in conveying the idea that these are
everyday people whom everyone meets and come across on a daily basis. The props used,
consist of the instruments being played by the band themselves, which demonstrates that
this is a music video. Also, there are various objects possessed by each individual person
throughout the video. There is a little girl shown, sitting on a rather large, blue chair which
suggests how innocent she is. Also, there is a butterfly which is shown numerous times
within the music video, and it suggests to the audience that people should observe the
simple things in life, such as the life given to this butterfly and how it can contrast to their
own lives. The lighting within the music video is fairly bright which is contrasting to the music
as it is a more saddened and meaningful song. The lighting shows the different characters to
be thoughtful and conveys ideas of the world being observant. The setting is within a studio
and the background of each scene is a plain white background, which keeps with the image
of purity and innocence but also the idea that the world is a blank canvas and you do with it
what you will.
The camera work used throughout the music video is consistent in presenting the idea that
each individual person is similar in someway or another. There are various different close-up
shots used throughout which present different characters emotions. There is a blonde girl,
whom has plaits in her hair and there is a close up of her crying, which causes the audience
to question what is wrong. This is the case for various other characters within the video,
many of them having tear-stained cheeks. The close-ups are clear in displaying the
expressions and emotions felt by the certain individuals. There is also an establishing shot of
the people in the video, which show them together as a group. Also, there is a long shot of
the band which shows that this is a music video. There is an extreme close-up of two women
hugging, which causes the audience to sympathise with them as they are gaining a closer
insight into their lives. There is a moment where a boy is covering the camera lens with his
hand, which conveys to the audience that maybe he is trying to hide away from his feelings
rather than face his demons. There is also a repeated close-up of various objects, including a
red necklace, which raises more questions to the audience of what these different people are
feeling to emotional about.
There is only one sound used throughout the entirety of the music video and that is of the
soundtrack. The song is a sad song, which is also emotive. The piano tune throughout gives
it an heartfelt and meaningful aura which captivates the audience almost immediately.

There are various editing techniques used throughout the music video. There are various
scenes which blur as they switch between shots, which ties with the emotive theme of the
song but also contrasts with the tears that are shed by certain individuals within the video.
The majority of the shots switch through straight cuts, which are somewhat very fast paced
in some areas of the videos. These cuts are considered to be jumps cuts as they are abrupt
and switch between shots lesser than a second. There are also some editing used of fonts
and words being placed within a shot. These words are counting different things and
actions that the different people are doing within the video, they are simple but also
explain further what the characters are thinking and feeling within the video.
